Contrary to the expectations of those who suggested the resolution , it aroused consid erable opi > osulon from George A. Holmes , who made n lengthy speech in snpport of his nlaira that the democrats had no business to meddle with anything of that kind. Frank Trimble spoke in behalf of Its adoption in a red hot speech , which was warmly ap plauded , and then Holmes spoke once more. When Holmes commenced his first s ) > cech he seemingly did not have a sympathizer , but whem he sat down he had won over sixteen of the delegates to his view of the case , for when the final vote was taken it stood 83 to 1C in favor of adoption. The suggestion of Holmes , however , that each delegate be put upon record by polling the convention , did not meet with the approval of cither chair man or delegates. S S. Keller was nominated alderman-at- Inrge by acclamation , and L. A. Casj > er was nominated for park commissioner in the same summary way. The main business of the convention being over in the passage of the motor resolution , the delegates seemed inclined to let everything else go as it would. A motion was made by C M. Maynard to postpone the nomination of the two candi dates for members of the school Iward until March 8. When pressed fur his reason ho stated that he did not lielievo the demo cratic part } ' , if he must give his reason , had any man that could stand bciuc pounded for two weeks without there being republican candidates that the democrats could pound back. Lucius Wells said there were men in the democratic ranks who could stand being pounded , not only for two weeks , but for all time , if nec essary. There did not seem to be anyone else that had so unbounded faith in the democratic candidates , however , and May- nard's motion carried. T E. Cassady was elected chairman of the city central committee. I'opulUta In Convention. Unless all signs fall the people's party of Council Bluffs , will spring a new deal on the tteople next week. Tuesday evening has been set apart by them as the time for holdIng - Ing their convention for the purpose of choosing candidates for members of the school board , and one of the prominent mem- burs of the party , Mr Ed Mott , is authority for the statement that It is their intcntiou to put up ladies as candidates. It is the be lief of those who have made the sugges tion that women can bo found who aio just as com | > etcut to hold down the position as the men who now compose the board , and in holding this belief they try to btt > cr clear of any temptation to "taffy" the ladies.
