THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; TJIfWSOAY , KEBlUrAHY 16. 1893. SILVER DOCTORS DISAGREE Conflicting Opinions Urist Begarding tbe Aggregate Cost of Prodnotioa. MILUONS SUNK AND MILLIONS FOUND Senator Sterrmrt rljrnre * n Clear Low on Krery Ounce Hug Out le rrted Mill- IIIR Campt In Idaho Salt I.itkr'9 Smelter. Ono of the arguments advanced by tlio eastern press in support of the repeal of the Sherman silver law is that the output of sil ver is far in excess of the demand and the cost of production very low. The cost per ounce Is placed by various writers at from 12 to 40 cents per ounce. Tlie figures are misleading because they are based on the coal of sliver taken from mines producing ore far bound the average value. The low grade mines arc not taken into account , nor la there any allowance made for the vast sums spent in prospecting and in develop ment wcirk. The pruimlnary work Is called dead work by the tUners The cost of preparing to take out ore is far greater than the cost of breaking and lifting the ore , says H. M. Beadle , an ex ] > ericnced miner , in the Helena IndeitcnJuit Sinking shafts is very ex pensive w > rk. costing from $10 a foot in the prospecting shaft , sunk in and roughly tim bcred soft ground , to 120 a fool for a flrst- class three compartment shaft. Levels and upraises cost from W to $35 a foot , * 15 being about the average where timbering has to bo done Winics , which are small shafts sunk from levels , cost about the same as shafts , The machinery for operating a shaft cost's from a few thousand to a quarter of a million dollars , and the cheapest shaft , houses will cost Sl.OOO. Heads have to be constructed , often at a prs.it cost , to enable the supplks and machinery to be brought in nnd the ore to be marketed. If it is best to reduce ore at he mine , the smallest mill will cost ? 5.000 , and some of them cost over $100,000. It costs in Mon tana from ? 2 to $ lb to break and mill a ton of ore , the average cost being about ? $ . If ores arc shipped on cars to smelters the freight and reduction costs from $15 to 52 a ton. In making up their accounts companies seldom Include the cost ot freight and reduc tion of ores sent to the smelters. The price the ore brings and the amount of silver , gold nnd lead in it is all that is retried. In 1'laln rlcurp * . Through the kindness of Hon. A. M. Holler , says Mr. Beadle , I am able to give the approximate cost of producing silver in the Elkhorn mine. The Elkhorn is one of the richest properties In the state. Decem ber 31. Ib'JO , there was ujwn this mine , which had then been owned by the English com pany about a year , 2a feet of shafts , winzes and upraises and C.020 feet of levels In 1MH ) there was produced in .ho com pany's mill at Elkhorn : # j. ; 0.43 ounces of silver and 170.03 ounces of gold. The ore sent to the smelters produced lfrJ.G23Sl ounces of silver , lCSr 7 ounces of cold and 1S7'JU rounds of load. The net receipts from the smelters were fSO.l .lS. The revenue account shows the expenses for 1STO , reduced to dollars , were $212.iri2.S > u. To this must bo added smelting and freight charges amountIng - Ing , at $10 per ton for freight and $16 per ton for smelting , to $27BI.42. ( Dividing the sum of these expenses by the number of silver ounces the result will show that the cost of producing an ounce of silver m IsiH ) was a fraction over M cents. If 10 per cent Interest on tlie cost of the mine and the cost of erecting machinery. $ S07.77G.sJ , be added to the expenses , the cost of producing an ounce of silver 'would be a fraction over CU cents per ounce. . The Elkhorn company's reixirt for 1802 is not yet out. but by resorting to the monthly Tepcrta Tor tbe year , without taking into ac count the expenses of the company in .Lon don , or the expenses ot freights and smelting charges , or the interest on thecost of the mine nnd machinery , etc. , the cost of producing silver wasover Cl cents an ounce. There is probably no mine in Montana which can pro duce silver as cheaply as the Elkhorn. The-Mining Ape says that the committee on mines and mining of the United States scuato , of which William M. Stewart of Ne vada Is chairman , will within a few days Issue a report giving its conclusions as to the cost of silver production. These are based on facts and figures obtained by painstaking Inquiries and responses to queries addressed to cxiwrienced miners , bankers and business men throughout the mining states. All these will be given in full in the forthcoming re in tlio orclaco , the committee will make tbo broad claim that , without counting the unusual funds hero and there * which yield enormously , the cost of getting the silver out of tbo mines will amount to an average of SI 50 an ounce. This shows a net loss of 21 cents an ounce to the business , on an average - ago production , on each ounce of silver put on the market. The committee thinks the results of the investigation will make an ex cellent argument in favor of free coinage. AviiKiti : iiorus AIII : HEAD. amps That Once Hustled with Now ( Julet n Tomb * . Western mining camps yearly give strikIng - Ing evidences of the rise and fall of greatness - ness , but perhaps no more remarkable Instance - stance Is at hand than that of the queer old town of Pierce City In Idaho. Its eventful history begins In 1SGO , when gold was dlscov- ered on Ore Fine creek. A year had scarcely passe * ! over the discovery when 20,000 restless - loss souls wcro swarming along the creek , and the richness of the digging soon made Ore Pine among the famous camps of the golden west. Gold was so plentiful that it scorned to lese its value , and men seemed rather in quest of the excitement attending the discover : , of new fields than of the ycl- low metal. They spent their money with a lavishness never witnessed before or since. Two years later Uoisu basin cleclritled the clvlll.'cd world with Its marvelous richness , and with its rise began the decline of Ore Fino. Men with blankets on their backs started over the hills to the new El Dorado , But Ore Fine and Pierce City remained peed camps for years , declining gradually as tin ground was worked out. Thirty-two yean have passed. Not n sign is left to-- Indicate where once the booming camp of Ore Fine stood , whiU Pierce City is simply the relic of wnat wa ; once the glory of Idaho ; a reminder to th. young men of the west , who have coim uix > n the scene that while they were beint rocked In the cradle in their easten homes and before many of tnem hai seen the light of day , a stern and rupgei class of men the noblest typo of America : manhood wcro climbing high mountains exploriug deep gorges , blazing trails , fight ing savage men and boasts , wresting thi golden treasure from the mountains , am preparing the way for homo seekers turning westward from the crowded oast. Pierce City today stands on a little bend overlooking Ore Fine creek , which wind ; through the open canon , so wide that 1 might bo railed a valley. A row of lof houses and shacks made of whlpsawod lumber bor stands on cither sldo of the single street The t > opulatlr > u consists of six or seven whlti men , about 100 Chinamen and four China women. It Is , In fact , a Chinese town. Tin eldest places arc worked and reworked b' the Mongolians , who manage to inako froti K cents to II n day. But their want of worth soon becomes apparent to their would-be dupes , and these conscience less quacks are soon consigned to the oblivion they so richly merit. In strange and strong contrast with these miserable boasters is the quiet , dignified yet courteous demeanor of hosa noted leaders of their profession , Who , during the past 27 years , have abundantly demonstrated their ability to effect speedy , perfect and permanent cures in all the worst forms of those del icate sexual maladies embraced within the general terms of NERVOUS , CHRONIC AND PRIVATE DISEASES.
