CntOAflO , III. , Tel ) . ID.-Wheat today fell
nearly 3o u bushel and shot iipnguln lic ! , nil
In tun minutes.
Traclcr.s wcro achasl. The break occurred
without the slightest watnlng , Just at
the close of ( hodiiy. In tliu uproar mid ex-
cltoniciit thu Impression quickly spread that a
clique , which has been holding up wheat , re
cently determined to shako loose outsiders by
lulling th price down Ic. They let It down ,
lilit the market In thospinl-panlc icsultlng ,
lo' Itself down 2e more , and the clique , for a
few fated moment" , was powerless to Mop It.
Homo optimists on the curb tills evening
declared Hint In view of the rapidity of the
action when It did commence , the opening
price tomorrow would ho " 'Jo , the prlro when
thu collapse began. As compaicd with lunt
night the closing flguics show n loss of lc.
Corn Is olV V and oat.s' . Provisions weio
not ulTectcd to uuy extent and maintained
neatly allof an advance which began In the
foiuioon. I'ork shot up 35c ; lard 32'ic ' : , and
ribs 25c.
The final action In wheat came like as a
lynching at a prajor mei'tliiK- pandemonium
in an Instant , where all had been peaceful.
Norman II Iteam hecniL'd to no the Icuderof
the vlgllantc.s. It was upon an avalanchu of
clllng by him and others that the feeling got
panicky and stop lossoidcisbccamcopuiallve ,
J adding to the weakness.
All ( lay previously wheat had ruled dull and
narrow. The predicted cold wave had not ma-
tcilallrid , but temperature w.is low In the
southwest and fntnlshcd giound for some an-
pnhcnslonwhile rolder weather was probable

damage. TheicMiltw s doubt and hesitation ,
which nruled dullness and pioventod much
Micngth. It was nut until V bad been ox-
prdlllomly knocked off the ptl-o that the
crowd loian to reiill/p that the market wa
receiving no support fiom the clloue , who had
been depended upon to prevent a break.
I'pon that discovery theie was a insh to get
rid of long \\lioatand It was found by hioKors
Mho held stop loss oidrrs almost Impossible to
find buyers. Theie was a partial recovery al
most as sensational as the diop had been.
Kennett , Hopkins ft Co. and Kggloston came
In as heavy buyers when the price had Its big
breaks and the crowd , jumping to the conclu-
nlon that the clique was again at work , sent
the nrlce jumping back. According to one
nuthoilty on prices the whole crond had been
tailing on after the bull clique.
The news of a drop of 2'ie ' In cash wheat at
Minneapolis on cnlatged receipts , a belief that
clique houses have unloaded heavily on the
July Imyers , while holding the May Ilrin and a
sudden attempt of the ciowd to wll , where
there was none to buy , caused the dump.
C'orn developed Increased weakness and de
clined .sharply. Itecelpts were In excess of ex
pectations , The out waul movement was light ,
Interior deliveries gcnoious and the market
steadily on thu Inuiease. Holders began to
show discouragement and theie was free sellIng -
Ing which Increased as the market weakened.
Ilaldwln A Tarnum , and Schwartz-Dupce
weto among the most liberal sellers , ami the
foimer having been Mtpposed lo ho Identified
with the New York combine the story was
started that the clique was weakening , but
weakness In wheat also and the icactlonln
that cureal weie reflected In the corn pit. . The
decline was lo from last night's llguie.s and the
close T.C from the bottom.
In oal.s there was an active trade and a
weak market. The weakness was duo to sym
pathy with wheat and com and also to liberal
liquidation by "longs" and .selling by "shorts. "
At 34o for May there was a big rush , all the
offerings being readily absorbed. Huyers were
finally filled up , however , and the prlco then ,
dropped 'ic below that llgurc.
It was not Mirpilslng that the provision
r trade tinned a little bearish at the open
ing. Hogs were weak and 15c lower at
the ynids. On the break L'udahy became a
buyer of libs through several brokers. This
turned the sentiment of the whole market.
There was a Inrgo suatteied short Interest
cicated on the decline and this sought to cover
at once. 1'rlces got a sharp advance of tiOc In
park. On the bulge there was some selling for
country account and some taking of prollts.
1'rlcos yielded a little from best llgurcs during
the whirl In wheat.
