THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , FRBlirAUY 15 , 1893. VERY MUCH TO THEIR URIXC Local PucVers Qfllto Well PlsaseO with the New Rates to the Coast. TARDY BUT NONE THE LESS WELCOME Conrrnlom AVhlrh Will I'nt Ml onrl Rlrcr I'olntnonnn Kqunl routine with Clil- CIIRO In the \Vny nrCotnpctlnK fur Coast Kvcr since the erection of the South Omaha packing plant It has been the drenm , the hope , the ever consumln ileslro of the men who pruw rich In slaughtering hogs nml cattle to be put upon a little better foot ing , so far ns freight rates are concerned , to Pacific coast territory than Chicago , their formUnbto ami eager rival for business on the coast , but the makers of transcontl- n 'iital ratis have with the utmost persist- cnc v Unored the Magic City for the greatest IKU king center In the world. Every attempt to secure concessions in favor of Missouri river towns , notwithstanding that the dist - t nee to northern coast markets was at loist 000 miles shorter , died n bornin' , and South Omaha. Sioux City , qedur Itaplds and Knnsas City had to vent their rage ujion the ntm.isphero. , , When the transcontinental association turned up its tota to the daisies a new hope sprang uppermost In the hearts of the packers on the river , and at once n sys tematic effort was commenced on the part of the Union Pacific to seouro concessions from northern roads penetrating the Pacific coast country. For a month or more it lias labored with the Northern Pacific and Great Northern to secure a differential in favor of Missouri river points , yielding in return cer tain interests in the Sound country to the other roads. At first all the transcontinental lines were represented in the meetings held at St. Paul , but the northern roads finally decided to frame a tariff beneficial to their own roads , nnd the new sheet has Just been Issued. It Is a radical departure in many ways from the tariffs heretofore in existence. The differential so long demanded has been granted and has been accepted by the St. Paul roads. The rate under the new agreement on packing house products from Chicago and common points is 1.70 car-load lots. From the Mississippi river it is * t.CTi nnd from the Missouri , river * 1.CO. This differential , made directly in the interest of Missouri river taints , virtually takes Chicago cage out of the Sound country as a com- jKitltor against Omaha ami Kansas City , although for the past two years it has done llttlo business in that section. Assistant General Freight Agent AVoodworth of the Union Pacific said yesterday : "Tho Great Northern , which is a new road in the Sound country , has been demoralizing rates more or less , having everything to gain and nothing to lose.Vhlle only three roads nro parties to the new tariff adopted at St. Paul , it is understood the California lines will have u meeting March I to consider that tariff which has been promulgated by the t'nion Paifti \ the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern. "While 1 imvino desire to belittle the new tariff , still I believe it will have little effect upon the trade in the Sound territory. For two years past Chicago nas not been a very active competitor with Missou 1 fiver pack- era for business , and the trade will remain Just about as before. Still , the Union Pacific , interested as it Is In Missouri river towns , wanted to make a differential In favor * of her best i > oints , and succeeded in getting it through by sacrificing certain interests in Idaho and Washington. If the packers could have secured the present rate , say three years ago. then they whould have been greatly benefited. Tlio differential is about the same an through the list and demon strates that the roads In interest desire to build up their own territory. " Tnilns Suowbouml. Trains froin the west were from ono to f Three hours late last evening , the delay be ing occasioned by deep snow. The Union Pacific train which Is du at 7 p. sn. pulled in a little before 10 , having been stalled in the snow twice during the trip. It was snowbound at a small station west of Ogdcn nnd had to wait for n snow plow and a gang of men to shovel it out. The same experi ence was had at Webber's canon. The Pullman car carrying Queen Liliuo kalani's embassadors was switched oft at Ogden and proceeded over the Denver & Hio Grande railroad. Ilnlluriiy Xoti'S. Georco Foresman of the lilkhorn went to Chicago last night. J. O. Philllppi of the Missouri Pacific has gone to St. Louis and will not return until the latter part of the week. A party of eleven people left vesterday by the Hock Island for Dundee , Tex. This is the first party from Omaha ticketed through on the HocK Island without change , thenew , line now being oi > en to Bowie , where it con nects with the Fort Worth & Texas. The Union Pacific will bring a special train of canned goods Friday for D. M. Hteelo & Co. It will consist of twenty-foui now ears and will be decorated with bunting nnd- covered with banners. VoaWrday morn ing there stepped from the Chicago express n short , heavy-set man , wearins a dark over coat , a derby hat and a general air of quiet ness. A dark mustache adorned his upper lip , and he carrluJ a small hand satchel , which bore the label. "William A. Pinker- ton. Chicago. " I ] It was Chicago's famous detective. "I am only here to look around , " said Mr. Pinlcerton to a BEE reporter. But the Hawkshaw's "looking around" meant some thing. It developed a big story , the publica tion of which may prevent the final consum mation of a cleverly worked-up srheme. In the little town of I'l.it&niouth there re sided some two years airo , a handsome and attractive girl , whose name the detective refused to give. She is known now as Oracle Parker , and Is the daughter of wealthy and Influential jieoplo. Shu became acquainted wit n a _ nian and woman who Induced her to leave home , and since then the parents of the girl have been much distracted. The girl left Plattjtnouth and went first to Chicago cage , then she wandere-1 about the country , being finally traced to Omaha. What has become , of her slnco her arrival here is a question. A day's search revealed the presence hereof of the woman who was instrumental in get ting the cirl to leave homo , and it was found that she had worked nt the Mlllard hotel , but was now earning her living by sewin r by the day. Where the man who was a party to the young girl's abduction has gone this woman refuses to state. Miss Parker , so called , has had a career slnco leaving the paternal roof that reads like a fairy tale. Her movements up to two months ago have been closely and accur ately followed , and s"ue has now dis appeared as completely as If she rnfd been swept off the glebe Six weeks after leaving home she was tracked to a chen.p restaurant In Chicago. Next she appeared in the ballet uf a summer opera company playing a season s engagement in Duluth. An irate father created a scene ono day on the stage and the girl took fright. She was ntrain found in Milwaukee , but before her parents could bo summoned to the Cream City she eluded the vigilance of the officers watching her. The female abductor is living on Farnam street not a great distance from the citv hall and a strong effort is to be made today to have her disclose the location of the girl. Mr. Pinkerton went to Denver on the 4 : .V > train yesterday afternoon. One of his men is still in the citv. and the case is to be fer reted out from Omaha. When the denoue ment comes some rather startling facts are promised that will tend to the breaking up of an organized crowd of professional pro curers who have headquarters in Lincoln and Omaha. St. Valentine was probably a good fellow when ho nourished , but , as the old adage goes , "every dog has his day , " and Val has had his. Ho is getting to bo a reminiscence , and , but for the fact that the newspapers refer to him occasionally , he would bo some thing of a back number. Yesterday would have passed unnoticed had it not been that the letter earners had big mall sacks and stopped a little c-f toner than uaual. "Tho practice of sending valentines is getting to bo considerable of a chestnut , " said the superintendent of mail carriers yes terday. * 'Of course wo handled lots of man , but it wasn't near as heavy as in times gone by. People are beginning to see it is children's amusement , and nro dropping it moro and more every year. The great trou- ole is that people sending valentines seem to think they are second-class matter. A 1-ceut stamp Is put ontho envelope sealed , and wo are obliged to collect 'duo' postage. This year has been exceptionally light. " Some rather amusing Incidents occurred however , during the distribution of the local mail In the postofflcc. Letters containing valentines were found addressed to the "Swede door" and " next "the German around the corner. " One was directed to the "man who lives next door to my house , " and the carriers were puzzled. But on the whole It was easy for the carriers. There were out few observances of the day about the city. The firemen gave their annual ball , there were a few. private par ties and the anniversary passed generally unnoticed. The book stores did little busi ness in the sale of valentines , and the ' Komio" outrages wens to be had at six for 5 cents. The guaranteed euro for all headaches is Brotno-Seltzer Trial bottle lOc.
