Advices from New Orleans Indicate that no
lower prices nre looked for on lemons. Im
porters claim that the present prices nro not
paying for Importing. At New York , however ,
they claim that the situation does not look fa-
voiablo for any advance , for while .stocks are
not large It would not require very much of
an advance to bring In plenty-
A grent deal Is being said In gome cities
about the practice of certain firms that send
out decoy ( ( notations to catch tlm shipper. It
would appear that Omaha Is not entirely free
froyi that practice . -A price list bearing the
name of an Umaha llrm , and dated Kebruary
11 , has just come to hand. It may bo of In
terest to note some of the quotations given for
the guidance of country shippeis. Kpgs uro
quoted nt 20 cents. On tlm day that the cir
cular was sent out the market in Omaha was
20cents , arid any amount was to be had nt
that price , only n slight dllTerence. Again tlio
circular quotes choice roll butter at 25 < S27e.
H Is harely possible that a small lot of very
choice country roll might bring 25 cents , but
nt the same time 25 cents Is all that the retailers
tailors nro asking for the very host , and they
are buying It ut2'J cents and 24 cents nt the
commission houses. The other quotations
given by the clicular are equally extrava
gant.

DEFIES THE COUNCIL.
Hoard of Health Iiicri'iiHliif ; Its Korccn and
Kxpcimr * .
The Board of Health held a special mcot-
: ng yesterday afternoon , and when the call
was issued It was supposed that it was for
the purpose of reducing the force to bring
expenses within the 10,000 limit sot by the
council in the general levy ordinance. The
mcmbcis talked of retrenchment , and a mo
tion was made to recommend to the coii'icil
that ono food inspector bo discharged , that
the services of ox-Councilman I.oe as a san
itary patrolman bo dispensed with , that the
salary of Dr. Towno bo reduced i'J.'i per
month and that Inspector Sherrcr's salary
be reduced $15 per month.
The motion was not put to a vote , but an
other ono of nu entirely different character
was , and it passed without a dissenting vote.
The motion was made by Chlof Senvcy , and
provided that tbo board employ three addi
tional sanitary patrolmen , who shall bo em
ployed at the llrst meeting in March and
commence their labors the 10th.
The board will clean the city as far ns
possible , and when the funds run out will
close up shop , unless the council provides
more. At the present rate the expenditures
will amount to about $1,100 per month.
Another Tux Itoductlnn.
There Is talk of still further reducing
Omaha's tax levy , nnd some of the councilmen -
men nro prepared to take such action at to
night's meeting. It Is believed that the gen
cnil fund can with safety bo reduced an
other mill , which will bring it down to 1
mills. The other fund that is to bo attacko
is the school fund , and an effort will bo made
to reduce that from ! ) to a mills ,
The councilman who are contemplating
such action hold that the Bonra of Educa
tion is too extravagant in the salaries paid lo
janitors and other attaches of the schools ,
and they propose to give the board a few les
sons in economy.
