THE OMAHA DAILY HER ; WEjffiTESIAY. FEBRUARY 8. 1893. 7 ANOTHER RATE WAR SETTLED Union Pacific Apin Brings its Rivals Into Lino. FROM HELENA TO OMAHA RESTORED Wcro Ciirrlcil from Halt Lnltc to DmviT for SIS Minor Miitcr8 of Illlrrrst tu Hull- ronil 9Irn , rn\o whlto-wiiigcd angel of peace has ngMn Bottled u.xm tliorailroad "sltuiitlon , " nnd n truce has been patched up between the Union Pacific and the Hlo Grande Western , A telegram sent bj .General Passenger Agent Frarels , from Salt Lake , yesterday , niv nounccd that result , but gave no particulars , In talking to u Salt Iiko rc.xjrter , Mr , lyoniiix Is represented to have said : "We did not act hastily or impetuously. It is ; plain business proposition. . Wo did not pro SK > SO to tin up 1,800 miles of road , as agalusl 400 miles of tlio lilo Grande Western , ant leave 1,2X ( ) miles of road open to do as tlicj please. The Ulo Graifdo covers only a smal l > art of the territory from hen to the Missouri river. Whei wo exchanged business with tin Burlington , Hork Island & Santa Fo , tin situation was illtrcrcnt. Now thcso roarti are disposc < l to make all the trouble tha they can. They reach into this city over tin lUn Grande , and you can see that wo canno inako terms with tlio iUo Grande unless I binds itself to control thcso roads. The Itii Grade certainly ought to bi > able to contro them , and if so dis | > osed can find a way. Wide do not propose to take n bluft tha who can't. If wo should cntc Jtito an agreement with the Kl < Grande , and , without requiring he to bring the roads cast of Denver to time they would continue the old practice of pay ing high commissions for trade from thi city , and wo would have no power to sto ; them. All wo ask is that the Hlo Grand nhall bo responsible for the actions of he Missouri river allies and -wo will have n trouble in coming to terms. The Midland the Denver it Hio Grande , the Hock Island the Santa Fo and the Uurlington arb part o the IUo Grande as regards Missouri rive business. " The tickets which have been the cause o this disruption between the roads are issuei on a rate made from Helena to Omaha t meet the Great Northern. First class ticket nre placed on sale at Helena at f 10. The rat from Helena to Salt I > ako is $ ! iG. The Helen brokers could ticket passengers to Salt I ak for fin or 18 , giving them a rcbat on the brokers in the latter clti The faro from Salt I > ako and Ogdcn t Omaha is10 'on ' ilrst class business , so th brokers , in Salt Lnko and Ogdcn could scl thcso tickets for fTi to Denver , as they coul bo resold to the brokers there. But most c the tickets handled by the brokers were o second class business , the rate from Helen to Omaha being but $ ! i5. There Is no seconi cliisa rate Irom Helena to Ogdcn and Sal l Uio , so the $ > Omaha ticket takes th place of IhoiC \ > ticket. SIlvFrancis of the Burlington continue the telegram by saying that ho had wirci Tilr. Bennett authority to act for the Bui Ilngton in any settlement that might b made. "These rate wars are demoralizing , to sa the least , " said the general passenger ascn of the Burlington , "and this ono seems t liavo been particularly so. as the comml : eions paid necessitated a haul o the part of both Union Pacific an Kib Grande from Ogdcn and Salt Lake t JJ6nver for something less than 5 , a distanc of nearly 700 miles. Less than a cent n mil over mountainous roads. Now that kind c railroading might do for boys , but it ! hardly the kind of railroading you would oi pect men to engage In , especially from ( business standpoint. " IMMUIIIANT COMMISSIONS. Hi-nclwuy Mmlo Toward .Si'ttlcmunt of tlio OiioHtlon. CindAno , 111. , Feb. 7. At an ndjournc meeting of the Western Passenger nssocii tlon today , encouraging headway .was mat tbwnrd a settlement of tlio question of inirri grant commissions. A resolution was o fcrcd providing for a 10 per cent comml ,8km on intcrmcdluto local busines iimd a maximum commlssinn of $3.1 from eastern railway association iioin 'to Missouri river points , St. Pat Minneapolis nnd points beyond includii points in Kansas , Nebraska , North at South Dakota and Minnesota : also n.comml eion of $4.60 to Colorado and Utah point The Northwestern line objected to the proii sttlon to abolish "split orders. " It wi llnally decided to incorporate In the resol tion a provision that ' 'split orders" shou not bo used or accepted except on business nnd via St- Paul and Minneapolis , and th division of business should bo loft' with tl imhngrant agents. It Is understood that tl steamship agents are each to give an indci nlty bond of $1,000 to insure the row against the misuse of thcso "split orders. " At u meeting of interested property ownc today the Central Elevated Railroad coi pany was organized , for the construction nn elovatrd loop in the down-town distil /or the Joint use of nil railroads. It has an able cast , nnd the equal of the scenery has never been seen here. "The Power of the Press" comes to the Boyd on Sunday next. The Chicago I < ady quartet will give a con cert at Young Men's Christian association hall tomorrow evening. The Minneapolis Tribune says of its work : "It was a very pretty anil commendable entertainment an entertainment which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The spectacle of four young ladies of graceful presence , attired in sinnilo dove-colored gowns , singing music which everyone could understand , was novel and refreshing in itself. There was some thing home-like and refining in It. Those present thought that they were not to be bored by vocal pyrotechnics. There was an informality and heartiness about everything they did which made the proverbial tediousness - ness of concerts fade out of recollection. The .H'ogiam was a very agreeable one , almost every number being enthusiastically encored. The ladies have excellent voices which show careful cultivation. " CHRISTIAN WOMEN. the OrKniilziitloii ofii Society fbi You MR Women. At the monthly meeting of the Women's hristian association helit yesterday sonic opposition to the proposed establishment ol a Young Women's Chlsthm association was developed.
