ELIXIR OF LIFE. Dr. Cninc Talk * on theplrilna1. . nnil Not the 1'hji.lral l.lffUttlii : ; Oualltj. Dr. Frank Crane delivered an instructive , and at the same time hichly interesting sermou on "Browncquard , " taking the famous French physician's elixir as a basis for i his talk In his discourse Dr Crane j synononiously applied the truths of i physical research to the spiritual ailments I of not n few of the latter day so-called I Christians ' , holdlnjj up their shortcomings j I inalicht i new to many. The sermon was i listened ) to n > a fair sized audience , and on , . the diagnosis of spiritual diseases , the pas- j lor , drew a worn picture worthy of note. I Beeinniuc his discourse with the supposed j discovery ( of the S'riup ' of eternal j outh by I Ponce . de Leon. Dr. Crane reviewed Faust's compact with the devil to prolonc life , and. arriving at the more recent key to per ; > etual younpness alleged to have been found by BrovvntNiuard. . the question resolved itself into three tords. "What is Life' " ' "Life. " continued the speaker , "is a mys tery insoluble We are no nearer the solu- tinn of life than we were J.OJOyearsatro. Life , j from a physical sUum point , is better with i the man who is full of it. Life itself , in its fullest and truest sense is the only thing that can cure disiMse. This is equally true of spiritual diseases , and I think that what Christ meant when he said he shed his blood for ui was that he pave his life for us. The blood of Christ represents life in us in pro- jiortion as we have it to cure our relitrious disorders A man with plcnt. % of life is not subject to disease- , neither is a man filled with the life of Christ in dancer of religious dif-ordeis , the spiritual life kiilinuthe perms. It prows , upon his breast and the pain is so great that he walks the floor all nieht lonp. But the odd thing about it my informant tells me is that the man is proud of it. He seems to prize it. Whenever he has an oppor tunity he takes a fneud aside and bares his breast and shows it to him. He has lost his wife and sacrificed his daughters to this eat- iiip thine He is held up as a im > del , I am. informed , to school boys and they are told that someday they maybe like him. Suddenly the cancer breaks the | pent-up pathcrinp flo s and he is made whole. The swelling disappears an > t over ' the patient's face comes a new lipht and a new look of intelligence pleams from his eyes. " Dr. Crane , continuing in the same strain , referred to the agnostic the man who boli'-ves nothing , yet would have one infer he knows everything. "This man. when brought in. was suffering from an aggravated case of big head his head was as large as a bucnet. An injection and his head is reduted to its uoraial size "Still another man was brought in. He walked on crutches. One of his feet was shriveled up. 'That , ' said iny comuanion , 'is his prayer meeting foot. He is said on earth to be a good Christian , but he has only one foot when he goes to church. The peculiar- itj of his disease , ' continued the instructor , 'is that \vimn he goes anywhere else the foot becomes instantly well. ' The hyi > odermic treatment was given him and he arises , throws awaj his crutches and walks out , well aud whole. " The speaker then told of the man who. six da.\sa week , was in good hoaith , jet on Sunday he gave 'way to the slightest indis position and took to his bed. home ] > cople call it Sunday sickness. And so the rev erend gentleman went on through the entire category of religious delinquents the ma'n who suffered witn an affection of the knees , who couldn't kneel ; the man who could shout at a political meeting , jet could not talk in even a whisper in church : tbe two- sided individual , who showed his coed side on earth yet who in the eyes of God re sembled a paralytic , and others. One of the startllnc features of the evi dence , it is said , will be the account of the attempted destruction of the Schufeklt dis tillery in isy. It was the intention of those plamnntr the destruction of the distilljry to have two bombs thrown throuch a plass sky light of the room which contained 1,140 Uar- rels of high wine. "A Parlor Match" nt thp Uo3'i It came near being a case of standing room only at the Boyd List night , which seems to be a fair indication of the popularity of that longest lived of farce variety shows , "A Parlor Match " The groand work of nine years ape is there yet. tjut it is embroidered with a wealth of ne v gaps" and entertain- ine specialties bj clever people. h\ans and Hoey are as funnv as ever , and they have gathered about them perhaps the strongest company now traveling in that class of entertainment. It nuiabcrs twentj persons. 'and there is not one who fail = , to do a spe- eialty. "A P.irlor Match" renews its \puth perernially , and the j > re > ent edition is as bright , spirited and entertaining a farcical performance as the season has yet jiroduced. "My Jack" nt the Tarna ui. ' My Jack , " which opened a week's en gagement at the Farnam Street theater jesterday. is certainly what it was an nounced to be. a powerful realistic play. It is one of .the best dramas seen in Omaha this season , and Walter Sanford's production of it , as presented here , is entirely worthy of the work. The author. Benjamin Lindeck. has combined inauj of the peed old elements of dramatic story , but the composition has been made with much ingenuity , admirable deference to the probabilities and a capital sense of striking incident. It is not fuultless the scene on shipboard is ridiculous hut it is much superior to the penenil run of "realistic" dramas ; indeed , the action's cli max , which brings the hero and the agent of villauy together alone nmid the wild , wan wastes of Sahara , is a triumph in evcrj re spect , impressively effective to a degree The scenery is * cry line. The opening -ene. . showing Falinouth town und bax. and ED ex panse of bl-jc Lnelish ihannel. is a tine bit of work ; the garden scenes are prett.pu tures and the desert scene expresses a tine sense of the reality. The dozen scenes sno-.vu were painted bv the late Matt Morgan , and the jilaj is worth seeiuc for them alone. Noth ing finer in "realistic' ' worK has ever been seen in Omaha than the sinking smack , the rescuing doiy , the tumbling sea. the top- plinir lighthouse , all in the one quick , strong scene that ends the first act. The company has its weaknesses , but alto gether is highly successful in its work. Mr. P. Augustus Anderson plays the leading character part , a Greek vagabond. He is picturesque , finely repressed and never fails to be effective , his death scene in the desert displaying an art of especial excellence The hero's presentation is in the care of Mr. William Stafford , who fulfills a * its demands fairly well. Mr. Charles Frew as an Irish boatswain has most of the comedy work of the drama to do and he does it well. A very notable performance is that of Miss Lillian Brainard as Mrs. Preseott , who is blind : she speaks her speeches with a fine sym pathy , her delivery of the battlefield deM-rip- tion in the first act being almost perfect The other parts in the cast are filled with varying degrees of success , and all in the verdict on "My Jack" must be recorded as a strong"comedy-draina , particularly well staged and commendably plaxed. Turn-Vrrrui Untrrintnuirtit. The second of tbe series of humorous and musical entertainments given this season by the Omaha Tuni-Vereiu occurred last even ing at their hall on Harny street. Xandl Bailer was well rendered and encored. Tlie Oumlia Licderkranz and the Omaha Sangcrbund were .special fea tures , the singingof both organizations beinir excellent. A humorous duet by Messrs. Xandl Bauer and AV Ptoecker. with a clos ing s ijg by the Svuieerbuud , tlosed the musical portion of tb < M evening's entertain ment. Dancing was then the order.
