Semritlc Were Somewhat Xarrower Tlmu
Usual I'oiunrrH oftlin Day ,
NEW VOIIK , Jan. 27. The stock market
today was somewhat narrower than usual , al
most nil the Interest In the trading centering
In the loading Industrials , Hugar und Dis
tillers. A few other stocks attracted some at
tention by their activity and movement , ehlol
among which were the lEIehmond Terminal
shares , lliirllngton & Qulncy , I'nlon racldc
and Coalers. Tlio feature of the day , however -
over , was tlio trading In Sugar , reflecting as It
did t ho contest but ween the Insiders und bhorts.
The discovery Unit Kugur stock Is so closely
held by Insiders that they can make u loan at
premium , which was said In some eases to
hiivo been as much as 1 per cent per day. was
surprise to the street , as It showed that the
Insideis held nearly all the stock nnd that It
has not IHHMI distributed among the public as
had been supposed.
The crowd trading In the stock at the open &

ommllcd only once or twice In , recent years.
Tlio . . opening , figures , , varied 1 on different sides
of tin-crowd. The bidding was very urgent
and the Insiders supplied the stock moder
ately , but prices declined somewhat , ami the .
theory nrovnlcnt was that the smaller shorts
worn to Ixi allowed to cover ut the prlce then
prevailing , hjo | the larger ones would bo n.
further Miiood | , The prlco ne\or got much

The other IndustrlalH were moved within

Ing In Delaware A Hudson curried HH price

at 1 no , with n not gain of H ( per cent.
Tlm granger slocks were rather heavy on ac

rumors Jiad forced It up considerably
before noon. It closed ( per cent below Its

the day. There wns timiMini strength de
veloped In Richmond Terminal shares , but
there wuro no now developments madn public ,
nnd the buying was attributed entirely to In-
-ldo orders , The common stock wus carried
to 10 ! , , und closed at 10' ' } , with a gain of 1 ! {

not gain of 2H per cent from its lowe l prlco.
The conference of the bituminous coal people
wai responsible for a gain of 2'4 ' In coal. All
the stories about the purchases of the New
Vork A Northern havti now been denied , and
that stock and Manhattan were today com
paratively dull and without material tlmu
change , although Manhattan nt ono tlmo
showed a loss of l'i percent.
The Post suys : The light for control of sugar
was the featuru of the day. In tlio face of a
comparatively iiulct market for the general
list Sugar certificates fell about 5 points yes
terday and advanced 4 points today as the
battle turned In fa > or of the bulls. It Is not
pretended that the Intrinsic values or general
conditions hud anything to do with those
Iliictuatlons. S ) far as the outsldo mark in
purchases Is concerned It would bo dignifying
tlio movement to call It. speculation. I-or
those who wished to buy they know not what ,
every chance of making or losing money they
know not why the sugar market has charms ,
but the general market should not bo judged
by such a tost. Hallway shares may become
the objects of u gambling speculation of
course , but when widely dlstiibtited and held
for more or loss permanent Investment It Is
Impossible to corner them or force each up
and down In the fashion lately seen In Indus
trial shares unless there Is at least a sem
blance of commercial reason for such a change.
The Post's llnaiiclal cablegram says : The
disposition of the markets today was bullish
on cheap money. The firmness was Inter
rupted by the ariest of M. Kouvler , accom
panied by toports of his suicide , later contra
dicted.

gold , expected to exceed 1,000,000 tills week ,
reduces the treasury reserve , causes In
creased neruovsness alxnit tlio future and
renders men more reluctant to engage In the
icw undertakings. The liquidation of seine
great speculations has set free large amounts ,
so that money Is everywhere eomp.u-ativoly
easier and cheap , hut nevertheless there Is
moro sense of uncertainty about the future
than appeared a month ago.
In most trades at Huston business Is satis
factory. The demand for iron and Its pro
ducts is large , but prices very low.
At Haltimoro rubber and naval stores arc
strong , turpentine advancing.
At Cleveland trade is fair , money easy , but
ollections slow.
At Cincinnati collections are slow.
At Detroit there Is some complaint of col
lections.
At Indianapolis increased sales of groceries
are noted , with advancing prices.
Chicago reports Satisfactory business ,
though collections are delayed. Money is in
good demand , but currency returning from
the country. Clearings , stock and real es
tate show a decrease and also receipts of
most of the most principal products because
of bad weather , though wheat receipts in
creased 150 per cent. '
At St. I'tiul collections are slow , as at
Milwaukee , but ut St. I-ouis they are fairly
prompt.
At Kansas City trade is good and collec
tions also , receipts of live stock liberal and
of grain moderate.
Oiimlm'n Kxcdlcnt Trade.
At St. Joseph trade is good in all lines ami
collections are good there ami at Omaha ,
where trade is excellent.
At Denver both trade and collections are
very fair.
Southern cities generally report Improve-
nent , especially Ixmisvillc , Nashville , Knoxville -
ville and Memphis.
At Mttlo Hock trade is quiet , but at
tUIanta business increases and collections
are fair.
At New Orleans trade is fair and money 1
In fair demand , with some pressure , but ' 1
cotton is dull with light receipts. Sugar is
still strong and active.
Speculation grows less active , many large
operations having been closed out. Wheat
Is a fraction lower in price with moderate
sales the western receipts in four days hav
ing been over 2,000,000 bushels in spite of bad
weather , while. Atlantic exports have been
only Kill,000 bushels.
Corn is only a half cent higher and pork $
products a shade higher , but oats a half
cent lower. Coffee is a < iuarterofa cent
higher with moderate sales , and oil a half
cent lower. Cotton has not changed In
price though sales have been quite largo and
the receipts this week thus far have been
40,000 and exports W.CXW bales smaller than
last year.
The iron and steel industry during the past
week has been facing record breaking prices ,
though the demand and sales are large.
Bessemer pig at Pittsburg has fallen to
J1S1.25 , und other markets for pig arc irregu-
laP , though sales are largo. The business in
finished products is very heavy , but for
many kinds they arc the lowest over known.
The outgo of gold this week is attributed
to various foreign requirements , but there is
still nn excess of merchandise exports over
imports for January. .
The business failures occurring throughout
the country during the last seven days num
ber 29. ) , as compared with the total of 332
for last week. For the corresponding week
of last year the figures were 297.
