Considerable excitement was caused by a flro yesterday afternoon in the Everett block , next door to Tun DEB olllce , on Pearl street. The lire originated in the dressmak ing rooms of Miss Molllo Oleason , on the second end lloor. The oil stove , which had been running all day , was extinguished about 4 o'clock , and it was only n few minutes later that smoke was seen issuing from the room where the stove was standing. The eauso of the flro Is a mystery. The lire depart ment was called , but before It arrived the llamcs had made considerable headway. Porno delay was caused by the discovery that the chemical engine , which is now relied u | > on to put out all ordinary blazes , could not be used on account of there being so many partitions In the building. The hoao had to bo attached to the lire plugs , and shortly after the stream of water com menced to play on the lire It was out. The greater part of the damage was from thn water , which soaked the newly made garments and the dress goods and damaged them considerably. The insurance upon the goods In Miss Oleason's part of the house was considerably less than the loss , which will reach , it is thought , about SUK ) . The damage to the building was slight and was covered by insurance. Smoke was seen issuing from the windows of Dr. West's oftlce and the rooms over the I'nlted Htates lOxpresE olllcevhlch are on either side of the building where the lire was , and It was feared for a tlmo that the whole block would go. Prompt action on the part of the department , however , prevented the Hitmen from getting any foothold there.
