The grain markets nero weak today and the provisions market itrong. Compared with Saturday's closing prices , wheat this evening Is elf Jc | per bu , , corn from (4c ( to ? ic , oats and rye o-ich ! { c , pork and lard each UOc up..ami ilbs lOc In all depart monts. Wheat started a shade higher on some good buying by prominent local operators and the destruction of a St. Louis elevator with l.OOO.- 000 bu , of wheat. It was o.ipoctod that the St. Louis event would result In a certain decrease In the visible supply , but lalor U was found that the burnt grain would bo Included In the Blocks not having been destroyed until the statistics had been made up ; however , there Mro other Indications that the visible supply would show some Increase. It was also re ported that the anti-option bill would como tea a vole tomorrow and was piulty sure to pass. This helped to cause weakness and resulted in n decline. Schwartz-Hupco and 1'ardrldgo led the selling. The opening was about the same as Saturday's closing and prices advanced \ , but then became easy and declined ? ic and held at the decline and closed within a shade of the bottom. Corn opened firmer and sold tip a fraction , but then turned heavy and weak. Trade was slow. Soft corn was Inclined to weakness. The leading houses began to sell until prices had qnlto a slump. The big receipts expected to morrow wens a depressing factor : for the bulk the chief weakness came from Increased sup ply of railway cars and an expected freer movement on that account fiom country stations. It was icportcd tlmt the Chicago division of ( he Wabash , which previously could spare no cars for castbound grain , dis tributed cars In various stations on Saturday and the Santa To road notllled receivers hero toM'iid them no more foreign cars as they now had siilllclent of their own. The oats market was Inclined to bo firm and remained so until corn commenced to break. Itlhen weakened and declined ! tO from the high point of the day. Provisions weio remarkably strong on only a moderate amount of business. The receipts ( if hogs were only 22,000 head , compared with I'htlmatesof 27ooo , and for tomorrow only 21,000 ate looked for. The high prices are very tempting to those who prefer to act upon the short side and thiislielptosupply the hulls with victims. The olferlngs were exceedingly light and It took verv little buying to glvo the market a boost. N. II. Heam and .lohn Cudahy were icredlted with being the chief buyers. Captain Taylor bought a good line of ribs and K. K. Dunham was the most prominent among the buyers of lard. Thu principal cause of this , however - over , was found In the unexpected announce ment of a further shipment of gold to Europe by a blow steamer tomorrow , which , rather upset llio calculations of the ImlU and damp ened the buying spirit which was last week so prominent In the early trading. The fail ure to bring the bituminous coal companles.of Ohio together has Induced lu'iivy ruallmlon.s on the late rise In Hocking Valley coal , and today It declined from 22 to 18 , hut another attempt will be made to get the companies to gether and a call will .soon be Issued for a meet Ing of thn association to be held either In New Yorker Cleveland and the knowledge of this led to a complete recoverv In Hocking Valley coal stocks. The { 4,300,000 shipped Satuiday went to tin- Hank of 1'ranco. Although the sales of su rllng exchange do not favor the ex port of gold , yet there Is some apprehension that moro of that metal will be nought as n commodity by the Hank of France. The situation of that gieat bank Is peculiar. Its note Issues were fairly up to Its old-time limit of 3.011,000 ( ) ( ) ( ) ) francs. The matter of gold supply In the Hank of I'rance Is of great Importance to Kranco and to the French government , and hence , to enable the bank to go on accumulating the metal , the limit of the note issue of the hank was re cently raised 01111,000,000 francs , the object apparently being to give to the hank the op portunity of buying more gold by m.'ans of its extended note Issii" . To what extent this will bo done , how much premium ( In the way of In terest ) the b.ink will be willing to pay for the gold exchange Is not favorable , are matters of conjecture. The Hank of I'rance , unllko the Hank of Kngland , Is not hampered In the Issue of Its note.by any necessity of receiving an equal amount of gold , but , on the contrary , often buys Its gold with Us notes. The gold question In Kranco Is not the question of sup porting the currency so much as the necessity of having a large stock of that metal as a war reserve. . ILivlns settled this matter , the men who look after the welfare of the j county told the treasurer to do the same thing with the Hell Line Hallway company and rake the sum of $ iR30 into the county's strong box. The tax was levied again st the railway company last year and the ollk-ials of the Missouri I'ai'itle objected to niaklnij the pay incut , claiming that the licit Line was a part and parcel of the Missouri I'acilic sys tem and that the tax was paid into the state treasury under an assessment made by the state hoard. The county attorney held another view of the case , deciding that the Belt Line road was wholly in Douglu s county and could not ho assessed by the state board , hut that the assessors of Douglas county had a legal right to list it as the taxable - able property of the wards through which the track w.is laid. In making the protest the ofllcials of the road had urged that the county assessment placed a double valuation upoi. the prop erty , but the commissioners took the other horn of the dilemma , declaring that the state assessment was illegal ami that the county assessment was the only one that would stand the test of the law. Upon protecting the bank of the Platte river in the vicinity of tlio "cut off , " the commissioners decided to do the work if the property owners would enter into a bond of $2,000 that they would furnish , free of charge , all of the necessary brush and wil lows. The bond was presented and referred. Mr. Paddock took occasion to oppose this improvement , declaring in a most vigorous manner that the county had sunk $15,000 or ? 20,000 in improving and protecting the banks of that river and that there was uothing to show for the money , as nothing had been accomplished. What he wanted to sea was the plans and estimates of some competent engineer in order that the board might know just what was needed. John W. Mulvcrhill asked to withdraw his naino from the bond of Constable Daly , who was arrested on the charge of embezzling , but the hoard , thinking that the request came rather late in the day , gently con signed Mr. Mulrcrhlll's prayer to the sacredness - ness of the lllos. One of the most sensational cases that has been instituted in the Douglas county dis trict court was begun yesterday. Mrs. Mattie - tie D. Merriam Hied a petition asking for an absolute divorce from her husband , Dr. Laureston A. Merriam. Dr. and Mrs. Merriam were married at \Vaukan , Wis. , in April , 18711. Since then , the petition states , the wife has been faith ful , true anil loving. Ou the other hand , the wlfo alleges that during the month of October , ISS'J , and at sun dry and divers other times the doctor has committed adultery with sonic woman living at MO South Thirtieth street , in this city ; that when she learned of this and that the doctor was knocking great chunks out of the commandments she protested , telling him that ho was doing wrong. Instead of these protests being met in a kindly way they aroused the ire of the medical man , who threatened to have the petitioner sent to the asylum for the insane. These threats , thoplaintilT avers , has caused her great bo.llly and mental suffering until now , when she declares that she has reason to think that her personal liberty is in danger. Only as long ago its last October , when the causes which have since led to the separation were being discussed , the doctor waxed angry and said : 'If you don't stop talking about me , I'll put you where you oan't talk. ' " The petition also states that the practlco of the medical man is worth at least $7,000 per year and that in addition to this ho has other property of the value of tvt,000.oln view of this property being in the name of the de fendant , the plaintilT asks for alimony and a share of the wealth when the case is disposed of by the courts. Dr. Merriam alleges that his wife has been of wale mind for some time , caused by the habituifl use of opiates , and not responsi ble for her actions. Mrs. Minnie K.
