LONDON , Jan. 9. The Mark I.ano Express In
Its weekly review of the British gialn trade
says ; English wheat has risen 5d In London
and Is in sovuial of the country markots. The
sales have been oven smaller than usual In
mld-wlntor. Tor the llrst t line In a long period
the demand has exceeded the supply. The
stocks have thereby been reduced 115,000
quarters. A i-ontliuiance of tills demand
would greatly help trade out of the despond
ent stagnation that provalfMl in December.
A decreased shipment for America and In
creased continental demand for Indian wheat
lias helped tlio market since Now Year's day.
The chief features of the stocks Is the enor
mous Increase in the supply of foreign. In
Jumiary , 1892 , the stock of llour was 595,000
quarters. It Is now 1,500,000 quarters ,

been quiet In consequence. Foreign advices
continue dull nnd lower. There Is no Immedi
ate prospect of any urgent demand for what Is
now at the seaboard unless for the hard Kan
sas winter , which Is.selling from 4c to 5c under
the regular contract grade. Values In the
near future nro a good deal of a weather ques
tion. The growing crop Is hardly up to the
average of thn past three years , which still
favors buying on all declines. The same bull
party is HtllMii control. Thorn Is no fcaturo
to corn. The lowest point wns4Gc. In oats
the trndo Is light , with fluctuations from 3 sc
to 34 ? < c. In hog product the business was llaht ,
with violent fluctuations. Tin-eleventh hour
bulls wcro ( ho best buyers. Thcio was good
realizing In laid. All wo can say about tlio
futuio Is that It all depends on lecolpts.

NEW YOIIK , Jan. 9. The stock market
was unusually actlvo today but withal was
strong , although considerable Irregularity In
tin fluctuations occurred. Tlio Irregularity
was In a gieat mcawirodtie , first to the bull
manipulations of the Industrials as opposed
to the outlook for gold shipments and pros
pects as regard to the same and the repeal
of the Sherman law at this session of this
congress. The sterling u\chanio market was
not higher , but while the demand was not ex
cessive ' , commercial bills nro reported becom-
Ingscarcor and the piospectof further ship
ments was looked upon as good. There Is no
ship likely to take any of the precious metal
before Saturday nnd estimates of the proba
ble out-go have not yet been made. The
feature was naturally Heading and Its trans
actions again amounted to very largo figures ,
but ' this was largely duo to the selling chiefly
of'tho speculative clement.
Reading was heavily sold In the afternoon
after the statement of the Jeist-y Centuil
wlthduiwnl beciimo public , audits price wa
driven down from 01 ! ( to 493 . A partial ic-
covory to50 occuried , but at that tlgiuo It
was left 13 percent lower than on Satuiday.
With this decllnu the rest of the mm-iiot
sympathised to a limited oMcnt , but as a rule
pilceswero higher. Among the partlcuhiily
strong stocks of the day Hock Island and
Iliirllngton may bo mentioned , both being
'
much num- net I've than usual of late , and the
buying npparently came fiom good sources.
The stiong features of tlio foienoon were the
Industilal stocks and S. V. White was a buyer
both of Sugar and Distillers , llulllsh talk on
the former was reiterated with considerable
olivet , the stock rising to 118'i , settling back
under the Influence or tlio decline In Kcadlng.
Distillers , however , were still pressed forsalo
by the piofesslonal operators and failed to
score advances which Us kindled stocks on-
Joyed. Notwithstanding the weakness In Head
ing , Lackawanna rallied from the late depres
sion and closed (5 ( per cent higher ; the Gran
gers , Including Atchlson.were unusually prom
inent In the dealings and all showed strength ,
but other gioups developed no feature of In
terest. The declaration of a 2 per cent cash
dividend on Louisville & Nnslivlllohad no ap
parent influence on tlio list or that stock.
The Postsay-j ! Tlio conditions were on the
whole of a naturall/.lng nature and gave few
points of legitimate advantage In a concerted
effort to nlli-cl the general list. Tlio market
opened in a somewhat weak and irregular
manner , especially as regards a few of the
moro actlvo stocks , although the general list
was not atlected. Support developed for thu-t !
stocks attacked , with the result that the mar
ket quickly swung Into n co3Ulllon of tlimneas
and buoyancy. Unusual conlldcnco was
shown by the manipulating cliques and the
bears soon saw their early advantage glvo
way to a generally that they wcio powerless
to check.
