today wa very firm , aside from Iho ttnnMic-
tlons In the few slocks which have of Into
monopolized dealings. A number of attempts
were made to put POIIIO llfo Into the general
market , but they met with no sue.c i. The
trading was almost entirely professional , and
there IsllHlo prospect of any change In this
respect for some I line to come.
The gold exports lod.iy acted as a dampcron
the speculation , but contrary to general ex
pectations did not Induce any selling of Im
portance. The traders tried to USD It In the
early dealing , but tlu-lr efforts met with
such resistance that the attempt
was Immediately Riven up. liuylng ,
however , iwas of hind to mouli )
order and remained so throughout the dav ,
being almost entirely conilned to covering
operations. The Industrials under the lender-
ship of the gentlemen who have now their In
terest In hand were still kept active mid held
with strength while among railroad shines ,
Ito-idlng showed the most marked falling off ,
fiom the Inteiest It has of late excited.
The street was rather dlsappoluled to learn
that the Heading company did not actually
( .ell bonds hut had merely bonowed up on
them. The announcement that the company
was Io lose some 22,000 tons u day of coal
made the llucluatlons unusually small , In
the market today the grangers were rather
neglected and their llui-tuatlons weie unim
portant. One of the strong features was
Northern I'aclllc preferred , in which the cov
ering of shares was most , marked , bill. Us ex
treme advance was only -1i per cent. Among
the specialties Manhattan still Undiluted
widely In comparison with the rest of the list ,
but Its llrst prices were Its lowest and at 5ljj
it was up 1 per cent. Its opening price was
1U pur cent below Its closing of last evening.
The Stock exchange gave notion that ( Join
ratio Coal stock would bo taken from the listen
on flic Mill and the old game of hammering It
down suddenly under the clrcuinslaiiees was
played by the traders with considerable sue-
ce.ss , 2 ! < pt-r cent being knocked off Its price In
a very short time. A sympathetic decline In
Colorado Puel Immediately followed. On thu
other hand , Toledo , Ann Arbor & Northern
Michigan and the Green Hay.stocks were
again lifted sharply. New England showed
some strength , although the chief purchaseis
werJ the traders. The market , on the whole ,
was dull , hut , In the face of the gold exports ,
remained llrm thioiighout , as Indications
are that less will go than lias been expected.
The closing was llrm at or near the best prices ,
as a rule , though Lackawanna was a marked
exception , closing at Its lowest , up on a frac
tional decline.
The 1'cnt says : The surprlso which the largo
exports of silver at this time seem to have excited -
cited In somu quarters Is not justified by an
examination of the year's statistics. We are
exporting sliver freely , at least 500,000
ounces being reported as engaged for tumor- )
low. Hut this Is by no means above the year's
average. Our not export of silver this year
has exceeded the record of any year since
1H7H. excepting the three years , 1885 , 1880
and 1800. Itlsthreu times as largo as the
movement of 1801. Our a-lual gross exports
of silver have In fact bcon quite as large slnco
the act of 1878 as they were before both the
law of 1878 and the law of 1800 were followed ,
by small exports , when tin price of silver was
high , then by a rapid Incioasa In shipments
when production again outstripped our gov
ernment's consumption and the price declined
again to still lower llgtires. In other words ,
the law governing the trade movement of all
commodities have governed the trade move
ment of silver bullion.
