weekly rovlow of trade : The business of the
new year opens well. In every part of the
country , and apparently In almost every
branch of business , the traders arc looking
forward to n year of largo transactions. Hut
In financial circles the year opens with con
siderable feeling of uncertainty owing to
the revival of gold exports , which will bo
nbotit fcJ , < XXMWO for the current week , and
the old doubts about the action of congress.
At lloston Jobbing trade In dry Roods Is
inoro active and the woolc-n mills full of
orders , Trade In shoes Is steady , ttuslncss
In leather and wool Is moro active. In
groceries pood.
At Philadelphia Iron Is wcalc and the wool
trade Is quiet.
At I'lttsburg Iron is more dull and weaker ,
'jut gliiBs moderately strong.
At Cincinnati the advance In spirits i.i
maintained and the tobacco trade healthy.
lUislui'ss Is remarkably good at Cleveland ,
rolled products improving in demand. .
At Detroit business begins well.
At Indianapolis money is close and Inac
tive , and pork packing the past year has
been t'Xl per cent of the average.
Trade at Chicago Is fair in volume- with
speculation in products , and stocks and
iiionev in strong demand at ( > per cent.
Tradu nt Milwaukee is satisfactory , with
money In good demand , as ut Ht. Paul ,
though ti-ido is quiet and collections slou-
there and at Minneapolis.
Business at Kt. Louis strong.
At KansnsClty the johbihg tr.ido is good ,
receipts of live stock fair , and of grain light.
At southern points business is generally
quiet.
At New Orleans business is fair , the sui > -
ply of money ample , cotton steady and sugar
In good demand ,
\Vhrat Tultri u Drop.
The government crop report started a lit-
tits stronger bu ) 'iug , but wheat anon reacted
to % cenlH. a decline of nearly Vy cents for
the week. Western receipts In three days
were over 2.000,1)00. ) In splto of as largo re
ceipts , corn gained over 1 cent for the week
nnd oats nlwi , while pork rose 10 cents , lard
ISO cents and hogs 'M cents per 100 pounds.
CofTeo is unchanged and oil ! ' < cents
stronger , but cotton shows no change with
sales of .V.HXX ) ( ) bales. Speculation in Blocks
is depressed by monetary anxiety. Govern
ment and other largo disbursements make
the money market easier , but bankers
expect exports of gold to keep up.
In Iron a weaker tone is manliest , with re
ports of reduced prices for pig by some
southern concerns , Deliveries of rails for
the past year were but I.IMJO.IKIOO tons. Mar
kets are. irregular and weak , though in
structural and sheet iron a largo business is
in prospect. The change in relations of the
Lettish and Heading does not affect prices of
coal. Copper and tin tire well supported ,
lead weak.
Shipments of boots and shoes for IS ! ) ! !
were 3,7KrHH ( ) cases , against : ! , -U4IM : ) hist
year and : tfiii , : : , : i9 in 18W.
The most prosperous year over known In the
textile manufactures leaves the full produc
tion of most mills sold for months ahead , and
the new year opens with great strength in
woolens and cottons. Above all monetary
uncertainties , the enormous demand for tex
tile fabrics appears to glvo tin assured fu
ture for months to manufacture and trade in
these branches ,
The business failures ocelli-ring through
out the country during thu last seven days
number ! HO , as compared with a total of135
for the conx-si > ondlng week ot last year.

An KiiL-onrHKinj ; Outlook.
NEW YOIIK , Jan. ( i. Hradstrcet's will say :
Stock taking and spring trade preparations
have imparted a tone of quiet to most lines
of business. Exceptions to this , however ,
are found in the distributive demand for
coal , clothing , and boots and shoes , stimu
lated by the present cold snap.
Kow England mills wore active in 18'J'J.
New mills , increased production , large profits
and low prices were the feature.
The cotton goods production wan the larg
est ever known , wages advanced in cotton
mills were also a feature. Outlook for 1SU3 is
generally favorable to a heavy production at
low prices.
The. now year opens quietly , but with good
promise. Colder weather has had a stimu
lating effect upon the distributive demand
for coal , clothing and boots and shoes at
leading western centers , particularity from
Chicago , .Detroit , St. Joseph and .Minne
apolis.
Tobaccos ami whisky are active at r ouis-
vlllo and Cincinnati. Cold weather checks
tobacco rccoipt.Su. * >
Cattle and hogs are active at Kansas City
at higher prices.
Pig Iron is lifeless and kindred trades arc
dull , coal cars on northwestern railways all
employed , Lumber is weak at Cincinnati.
Heavy machine manufacturers anticipate a
heavy year's trade.
It is : i HCiison of quiet preparation at tha
south. Heports from them deal morn with
last year's reviews and this year's prospects
than with actual now business. Sales fair
and conlidcnt , briefly express the situation.
Cotton is firm , but in belter demand.
Liquor dealers are still agitated about pro
hibitory legislation.
Supply of Whrnt.
At was expected the decrease of available
wheat , exclusively reported to Uradstreots ,
proves to have been only temporary. Kor
the week ending December III , the Increase
was 2,118,17. , ! bushels. For the fortnight ,
however , the not gain is only WW.OOO bushels ,
while the "olllclal" visible supply has
gained 'J.UTJI.OOO bushels on very much
smaller total stocks. Export. * of wheat
from the coasts this week ( flour included )
equal Il.OOS.tW ) bushels , atr.ltnst a , < Jl7,000
bushels last week , 5UI ! , ( > 00 bushels ono year
ngo , LVMVHK ) bushels in the same week two
years ago , and , J,137,000 bushels three years
ago.
Dominion trade generally is quiet. A now
feature , however. Is found In thu stimulation
of the demand for dry goods , clothing and
boots and shoes ut Montreal by the prevalent
weather.
The banner year for bank clearings 1ms
Just closed , The aggregate for slxty-ono
cities was * U3il8lH8a7li , ! , an inmmso of V.I
per cent over Ib'Jt. Only twelve clt ics show
u deereaso from last year , most of them
being in the southwest and on the Paclllo
coast. Kow York clearings aggregated $ . ) , -
OOa.lGO/'OI , fi'.I.U nor cent of t ho total , against
nu Increase of 8.0 per cent In IS'JI ' , but a de
crease of a.l from IS'JO , Chicago now holds
Becond place In the volume of bank clear

AVall Street Hovlew says ; The beginning of
thonowyc.ir finds the spoctilatlvo market
unchanged in n-spect to the limited and pro
fessional activity which It exhibits. The do-
inand for bonds lias alone correspoucd in any
degree with the anticipations of a reinvest
ment of January income collections , A
slight disposition to purchase the better class
of-dividend paying shares has shown Itself ,
but the movement has taken no shape which
colild encourage Improving tendencies In
purely siH-culutlvo values.
The icuuircd case of the money market ,
the tibscnco of any approach to n Hurry In
Interest rules on the half yearly shifting of
loans and disbursements that have been
completed , and the ixirtial insensibility of
the street to the prospect of further gold
shipments are convincing proofs of the nar
row condition of speculation und the ab
sence of any publlo iutcrest whatever.
Spcdal cases have dctermiuud the move
ment In n fn\T \ specialties , Manhattan. Sngar
and t'nlon Paclllo being the most notable of
the bull features , rrhllo n part of the ofTccts
of bearish manipulation In sotnn of the In-
dustrlals , such as Chicago Gnsnnd Distillers ,
the action of Heading stock and Junior secur
ities , has l > ccn thegrMtcst obtainable factor.
The announcement Thursday that as much
as $2,000,000 In gold would bo sent to France
today was not anticipated , the excess being
so low that actions In question could only b
made In conjunction with the documents of
each going between Paris and Ixmdon , At
the same time It would seem that the appre
hensions the market has entertained of such
an outflow had partly discounted the effect
and the market was relatively steady In the
face of the announcement.
Foreign participation continues to bo re
stricted to the narrowest limits. The fact
that a considerable amount of Union Pacific
branch line bonds had been purchased by
the representatives of the Dutch stock
holders of the property Is regarded as a
matter of moro 'than ' temporary Interest ,
while the belief that n largo foreign house
has extended financial assistance to the
Keading has also been accepted as a sign
that Kuropean capitalists are moro Inclined
to Interest themselves In our corporate se
curities.

Atnotlmoin the history of the country
has pneumonia boon so prevalent as during
the winter months of the last two years. In
times past a common cold was not consid
ered at nil serious , but of lute years the
great tendency of colds to result in pneumo
nia has made ( icoplo apprehensive. The
trouble Is that colds are not always properly
treated. No preparation containing opium ,
wild cherry or chloroform should be used , us
they ha vo a tendency to dry up a cold , where
as It should bo loosened and the lungs re
lieved. It has been observed that when
Chamberlain's Cough IJcmcdy is used the
cold never results in pneumonia. The reason
is that this remedy stimulates the mucous
membrane which lines the throat and lungs
to a healthy action , causes a free expectora
tion , throwing oil the poisonous matter , and
counteraots any tendency toward pneumonia.

Aii actress who may ono day bo a great
artist made her debut in Omaha at the Iloyd
last evening. Her name is Madeline Merll
and her chosen artistic sphere Is emotional
comedy. She Is young and ambitious and Is
n her Hrst starring tour. Sardou's "Frou-
-You , " is an emotional comedy that taxes
.ho best abilities of the experienced in its
wrfeet presentation. In the title
i.irt Miss Merli evidenced consider-
bio talent and much Intelligence. Her
'aults , if they may be called so , were
if omission rather than commission. All
iho ( Tid was done well , but the part lacked
illing in. Miss Merli has a line stage pros-
nee and her enunciation is perfect ; study
.ml . experience may carry her to the fore-
rout iu her profession. In the great scene
h her sister , Miss Merit's Frou-Frou was
.00 reserved ; while the speeches werecmo-
lonal her manner was stoical and her ac-
Ions almost complacent. In the fourth act ,
n the Interview with her wronged husband ,
die was much better , almost admirable in-
Iced , displaying emotional powers of con-
Idcrablu force.
The company supporting Miss Merli is
passable , and the comedy was nicely set.
: Concert.
The concert given at Young Men's Chrls-
lau association ball last evening by Mr.
iVhitney Mockridgo aud his company was a
nest cnjoyabld event , The company is ,
vitbout exception , composed of vocalists of
nero than ordinary ability who fully de
served the enthusiastic encores they re
ceived.
Ono of the most pleasing features of the
entertainment was the singing of MissPosta ,
who combines a beautiful face and figure
with a voice of unusual compass and swcot-
icss. Mr , Mockbridgo was mi especial fa
vorite aud in a bait dozen selections bo dis-
ilayutl a tenor voice which is seldom
equalled. The work of iho other members
of the company. Mr. WiiitcrnitMr. . Wyatl
mil Mjss Almy was hardly less meritorious.
IlowJt ISrcamo Popular.
When people ihul an article much superior
: o anything of the kind they have ever bc-
'oro used , they are almost sure to tell their
friends about it , and especially if they Iniow
of some friends net-ding such an article.
Dealers also soon leant the true value of
their goods , ami when they have an article
of unusual merit they will almost invariably
mention the fact to their customers. This
accounts m a great measure for the largo
sale on Chamberlain's Cough Kcmedy. Hero
is an instance : W. L. Needham , a prominent
citizen and busitu-ss matt of Orrsburg. Mo. ,
lias been selling Chamberlain's Cough
