About the saddest thing I over en 11a
countered wns n pathetic llttto Incident a
on the battlefield nfter the fiio jo of r :
Athxn'tix , said Major W UHnm R Hodges Ea Eli
to the Globo-Domocrnt man. It wns li
niphtntiil I had been ordered to go out liu lin
nnd work on tv casement near the u
enemy's lines. They know wo were tln
tln
n
thcro for they kept up a continuous ping , n
ping , ping of mlnio balls , now nml then q [
varying the amusement by sending n. r
hot ton-pounder , scorching the ground o
nnd playing hiivoo with the bushes b
d
unpleasantly chno to our oats. As I v
was running about , suddenly ono of our S
boys nuhod up nnd said , "There's a ' ]
dying man wants to sco you , captain. c
ct
You'd bet tor como quick for lio's got u ct
hole through his head. " t
T hastened in the direction ho indi t
cated and soon foun 1 the pear follow. 1 .
Ho was bolng propped up by u corporal , 1 .
but by the way ho acted and talked I \
know ho was settled for. 1I 1
"They've got me this tinin , captain , " 1 I
ho said slowly , the blooa choking him 1t t
as lie spoko.
llo'd boon wounded a couple of times
before , and was a bravo man and ti good
ono , too. I said what I could in the line
D f sympathytelling him that. It wns the
fate of war , and that all his old com
rades would follow him sooner or later.
It was only a matter of a few days , any-
I h ow.
N "I w nut you to do mo a favor , cap
tain , " ho said , the death sweat on his
i forehead shining llko beads in the fitful
glonm of a i-andlo wo had lighted.
"Of course I'll do ii , my boy , " I said.
"There's my Itnapsack and cantcoa , "
ho choked nlUfully ; "take them or send
them to my poor old father and mother
up in Vermont. Toll 'om that their
only son died like a soldier on the Held
of battle. Toll thorn that I died think
ing of them ; and and and there's
unothor matter , another "
Tloro a stream of blood gushed from
Ills lips , and his oycs took on a look of
horror that almost frightened mo.
"Another imvttar , " ho gasped , "an
other matter. Reach down in my blouse
nnd pet a picture that is there. "
I did as directed and saw in the faint
light thai the card bore the face of a
young woman.
"It's it's the girl I was going to
marry ! " sobbed the dying man. "Toll
her that that I died with my lips on
hers ! Put the picture to my Up * , Cap
tain , that I may in y kiss itl"
Ho kissed the senseless cardboard
over and over again , and though I
turned my face reverently away I
caught a g'limu&o of the lovo-lit oyoa
that told his devotion. As ho caressed
the likeness for the last time the ambu
lance drove up and ho was tenderly
jondcd in for the hospital , where his
just moments might bo at any rate a
little loss painful than on the rough
rock-strcwn battle ground.
The first chance I got I aont that knap
sack and that sweet face to the onus
who loved the soldier. That isn't all
of the story. Just before the battle of
Altoona , and after General Hood
swung round to Grant's roar , I was
riding along a very dusty road with my
company. Suddenly I saw n spactaco ! bn-
foromo that nearly knocked mo oil my
horse. ' .Chore , in the middle of the road
with his arms waving wildly toward mo ,
wna thai Bumodi'injrsouHor. His. bond
wns bandaged up , and when ho spoke his
voice was much impeded.
"I've got u furlough,1' ho raid , trying
to grin good naturoaly , but failing bo-
ciuiso of the bandaged round Ins faco.
"I've got a. furlough , and I'm , going
homo to marry that girl. "
And ho did.
History of u right.
The stalwart soldier who commands
the Columbian guards at the WorhV's '
lair grounds has a military record of
which the liighcat of our generals might
well bo proud. Ho holds only the rank of
lloutonant colonel , although ho is cred
ited with having done as much to turn
the tide of rebel victory into the ebb of
defeat on the third and Html day of Get
tysburg a * any man who stood in the
union ranks on that bloody nnd really
decisive Hold. Colonel Rice began tils
active military career at the ago of 10
us captain of the Fourteenth Massachu
setts regiment April 27 , 1801. Ho hcU
the snmo runic successively in the Nine
teenth nnd TwiMitloth Massachusetts
volunteers , nml was engaged in the battle -
tlo of Hull's Bluffs , Peninsular campaign ,
battle of Marlon Mills , wiogo of Yorktown -
town , battlue of West Point , Fair Oaks ,
Oak Grove , Poach Orchard , Alton's
Farm , Savngo Station , \Vhlto Oak
Swamp , Glondall ( commanding regi
ment ) , Malvcrn Hill , second Malvorn
Hill , Hull Run , Fairfax Court House ,
Sputli Mountain and Anliotum , where
ho was severely wounded. After re
covery ho wns promoted major of the
Ninotuonth Massachusetts volunteers.
Ho was engaged in the second attack on
FroderlcksDurg and the action ut
Thorouchfaro gap.
The War department testified that
the conspicuous gallantry of Major
Kdmund Rico of the Nineteenth Massa
chusetts volunteer infantry at the third
day's battle of Goltysburg , where ho
was severely wounded , did moro than
the slnglo exertion of any other ollluer
on our side to roltieyo the day , after
the battle hud boon virtually won by
confederates who had broken our lines ,
and wore cheering and swinging their
hats on our captured guns.
After the line was broken the Nine
teenth dashed in and p'aced themselves
in the roar of the break , and for twelve
niinutou received the enemy's llto , at a
distance of loss than ilftoon paces. In
that time ono man in every two of the
whole regiment , nnd bovon over , foil ,
including Rico , who was shot in front of
hia men , with Ills foot on the body of a
( alien confederate , ho bolng at that mo-
merit the olllcer lighting nearest the
enemy in our whole lino. Ha fought
till ho fell ; ills mon fought till thov full.
Hia example hold thorn linn at a great
crisis in the country's history. Ho
hold PlcUott'd heavy column in check
with the single thin line of his regi
ment till reinforcements , came from
right and left and thus saved the dnv ,
To the daring leadorshipnnd magnlil-
cent couruco ot Lloutonant Colonel Rico
in that crisis much credit is tluo for the
great success of the movement. With
the crylof "Follow mo , boys ! " ho dashed
forward into the advance of the onumy ,
lighting with Indomitable courage , and
fell desperately wounded inside the
line * of the enemy , without doubt the
mdlng "man In bluo" who ponotrntod
nd foil within Pickott's advance.
After Gettysburg ho served to the end
I the war , pnsslng throuQh Iho lorrlbl
itllcs of t ho Wilderness , Spottsylvnnla
ourt House. Cold Harbor , Petersburg
id Roam's Station without serious ln
iry , although over In the vaan of the
ghl. Ho participated in the last fusil-
ido of the war so far as the army of
10 Potomac was concerned at Appo-
mttox. When the conflict closed , ho
us assigned to the famous Fifth United
tales Infantry , nnd bore a gallant part
i the constant Indian warfare in which
hat splendid regiment was engaged ,
lo ] was the first olllcor of the United
tales army who successfully used the
lotchklss rifled cannon ag-ilnst Indians ,
avlng brought his battery into action
fler a gallop of llftoen miles over a
athor difllcult country , ngulnst Sitting
lull nnd Spotted Kaplers Indian war party
t Milk River light , Montana , July 17 ,
870. Ho trained his guns so nccu-
utcly that , at the second discharge , the
nnccuslomcd savages , frightened by
ho exploding shells , broke and ran in
nnd panic toward the shelter of the Ca-
ladian line , leaving behind them a largo
uantity of provisions and other mato-
inl , as ivoll as ninny dead ponies. Some
if the Indiana , including Little Assino-
loine. since killed , with Sitting Hull ,
luring the ghost dance troubles of ISflO ,
voro wounded by fragments of the nils-
ilos , nnd this caused the stampede.
L'hcy could stand louden bullets well
snotigh , but iron blown to fragments In
.heir midst waa too much for their un-
titorntt courage.
Colonel Rico is a tall , finely proper-
loncd , decidedly handsome man , still
.n the prime of life , although military
.inrdship has grizzled hia mustache nnd
ivorn bare his temples and ills forehead.
It is no wonder that , under the com
mand of this veritable hero , the Co
lumbian guards should bo a model mili
tary corps.
I'lirinulltlcH UlipenseilVltfi. .
Colonel John L. Burloigh , who served
in the Army of the Potomac , and who
is said to bo the youngest commissioned
olllccr in the service of Iho union , was
introduced to Colonel John S. Chiles ,
who fought Tor the south in Forest's
cavalry. Reminiscences in order
Immediately , says the Brooklyn Eagle.
"I was ut a Grand Army icunion the
other evening , " said Colonel Bur-
leigh , "and a man who wns a
private in my company and whom J
had not seen since Iho war hoard mo
called by name. 'Is that Burlcigh that
was captain of my company ? ' ho asked.
IIo was assured that I was the man in
question. 'I swore that if I caught him
uftor the war wns over I would give him
the most all-fired licking ho over got in
his life. ' 'Well , go in and do it'said
ono of his companions. 'No , I guess
not. I'm potting a little bit old now ,
and Lord ! how ho has grown. When I
last saw him ho wns a little slip of a fel
low only about live foot high , weighing
110 pounds. I guess I'll lot him olT.1"
Then Colonel Burleigh told about at :
encoun'tor ho hud with u southern woman
wtio had just routed the major of his
regiment who hud approached her house
with a petition for food.
"Why , sonny , " she said , "you ough
lo bo with your mamma. ( The young
oRlcor tearfully agreed with her. ) Give
you n meal ? Of course I will , and you
can bring that sneaking Yankee majo
witli you , too.1'
A very bountiful meal of cornuread
bacon , chicken , potatoes and other dain
ties was soon spread 'and partaken of.
Then the northerners pullo-l out green
backs and asked to bo allowed to pay for
the meal.
"No , " said the woman , "wo don't
take money for food here. Besides , we
don't call that green stufl money here ;
wo burn it. "
"And that was true , " said Colonel
Burloigh ; "tho north made tons and
tons of money by the southerners' burn
ing currency issued from our treasury.
They were so sure it would never bo re
deemed. "
Colonel Burloigh's story reminded
Colonel Chiles of a morning when Gen
eral Magrudor uwoko and going up a
hill saw u. whlto house in the distance.
He sent an aide to ask the mistress of
the house if she would oblige him with
n meal for himself and staff.
"While the woman , who was a south
ern svmpathizor. was preparing the meal
a private of a Virginia regiment cnmo
along nnd asked for food , " continued
Colonel Chiles.
"Ho was informed that the meal was
being prepared for the general and his
stall' . 'If there's anything for you after
they finish you are welcome to it , ' said
the hostess. The Virginian , who was a
man of good family , waited humbly till
the cxpeetod guests arrived and then
crowded in bcsMo the general and be
gan to eat. MugruUor turned to him a
little sharply and snld : 'Do you know
with whom you are eating , sirV 'No , '
said tho"privuto , 'I don't. Before the
war , sir , I was very careful with whom
I associated , but , now I don't trivo a
