une's San Antonio , Tox. , special says : The
experiments nt rammuiclng- , which were bo-
Bun hero yo3tcrdny afternoon by U. G. Dry-
onfurth and party , were kept , up until 4
o'clock n. m. The results , while not as ouo-
ccssful as they mlgut have boon , wore sufil-
clont to demonstrate that the theory ot pro
ducing rain by means of concussion is a cor
rect ono.
When the work of bombarding began last
evening there were a few clouds overhead
and by 0 o'clock the heavens were olenrod
and the moon and stars shone brightly.
Tboro were eight hydrogen-oxygon balloons
sent up during the night at Intervals of
about forty-llvo minutes. These balloons
rose lo a height of from 1,000 to 2,000 foot
and tboy exploded with terriQe force , the
concussion being felt for several miles around
The banks of clouds In tbo southeast
horizon began to move upward by 11 o'clock ,
and being propelled by a strong wind from
that quarter the heavens were soon over
cast. It was 1" o'clock when a particularly
ominous clojd catno up and was soon directly
overhead.
Ono of the ethereal monsters was lot co
with a fuse timed nt three minutes , The
balloon contained 1,000 cubic foot of
hvtirogon-oxygen and arose almost perpen
dicular to a hoightb of 0,000 foot when
it exploded In the very center of tno cloud.
A slight sprinkling of rain began to fall a
few minutes before , but the explosion was
followed by a drone-lung downpour , which ,
however , lasted but a low minutes , when a
slow driz/.lo sot In and was kept
up until 4 o'clock this morning. Tnoro
were , in addition to the balloon , about -1,000
Dounds of rosollto exploded on the ground
ana 150 shells in midair. Tno wind during
the en tire tlmo that the explosions were in
progress was blowing a gale from Ibo south-
outt nnd it tins novorlioforo been known to
rain hero when the wlna was in that quareer.
Thoru wore no experiment ! ; toduy It having
decided to begin operations next Tuesday ,
when arrangements will b3 en mote ted for amore
moro oxtoniivo and thorough tost.
