once of TIM : rttft ! . | I once know n llttlo old
bookworm whp hntintcil the Now York li
braries nnd whoso manner , ways nnd char
acter bore n most striking resemblance to
that poet who wrote the most perfect elegy
In the Enaluh tongue , Thomas Gray.
Ho was a little , dainty man , with silvered
htilr and a rounded paunrm his most strik
ing physical charactorlstlcnf his line , nenslvo
blue oyns wcro not bcamlnir upon you , Hts
clothing was faultless. ls manners were
courtly. III ? very ponslvnnoas wai benign-
nnt nnd restful. Ho scorned to oxhnlo an
nrotna of musk nnd mignonette ; and , ns I
used to look at him for an eighteenth cen
tury remainder , the grotesque notion always
came tbat his melancholy sighs of pleasure
or disnpprouil , as he fed upon the musty
tomes bolero him , could they bo clvou phvs-
Ical aspect , would conform to the poorly
lavender of his nmplo stock and spotless
trousers.
liy nnd hy 1 missed him. Ills llttlo paunch
had gotio not nnil overcome his stomach with
gout or something , and tlio dainty and
learned little old bookworm had turned from
the tombs of the Astor and Mercantile to the
endless tomb ot eternity. I was sure that
here was another Gray. Yes , ho had boon ,
'
I found , supported in a'cadomy , college , uni
versity and" In travel by the thrift and trade
of two women who blindly believed that In
tlmo ho would astonish the world with Iho
product of his Konltis. l lkc Gray , ho never
earned u penny ; his unconscious wlnsoijlo-
ness conquered nil ; his learning was vast ,
and his Intlolcnco was astounding. Ito had
spent a lifetime in exhausting the historic ,
scientific and philosophic researches and
product of others. Ho loft tons ot begin
nings of great endeavors. If ho had boon
forced into country environment , as was
Gray at Btoko Pogis , bo might have given
the world un idyl or nn elegy , and then the
llkcnoss would have been complete.

The very accident of rural retlracy
compelled or Induced Thomas Gray to
crcato the ono bit of verso which pave him
plncQ ainonir the Immortals. From 1727 at
tbo nuo of 10 , when hU mother plncod him
iu Eton , and where , tradition has It , he at
once began tu versify , until ho expired ot
inertia and gout in the arms of Ur. James
Brown , master ot Pembroke college , U.itn-
brldgc , on the auth ot July , .771 , a perio.1 of
forty-four venra , ho was as continuously In
nn atmosphere of books as any man who
' over lived. For tils day and tlmo ho was Iho
I most variously and penetratingly learned
I nan in Europe.
L Ho was practically mad for aud from book
i knowledge. Ills devotion to research
I scorned an endless intoxication of acquire-
L mcnt for the thing or fact encompassed ,
I rather than tno healthful acquisition of
[ knowledge for the uses to which it may bo
I wisely out.
f 1'roctselv as with thousands of so-called
f scholars In our own time , ho allowed study
I and Icarnlng-eottlne to become n disease ,
I instead of malting it subsorvinnt to wise llv-

f others less learned and consequently more
m creative minds , fragments of stately trajro-

sentencehe oyur wrote about Gray : "Had
Gray written often thus , " said the cantank
erous master of words , "it had boon vain to
blame nnd useless to praise him. "
For thcso nnd ether reasons the ono

John Penn built Iho modest , yet noted

A curious illustration of the decadence of
great families , ns well as of vast fortunes
even In Enclaud , is found In the tlual ex
tinction of this , the most eminent brancn of
the Penn family , and the dlvorjion of their
once great estates. Every ono la familiar
with the escheating pf William Petin's
American possessions , in which tuo "oatuto
of the late proprietaries was vested in the
commonwealth , " the payment by Pennsyl
vania ot 130,000 sterling to the devisees
and legatees , "In remembrance or the enter
prising spirit of the founder , " and the
granting by the Engllsn birllamcnt , in 170J ,
of an annuity of 1,000 to his
heirs and descendants. All this was
In addition to the rich English pos
sessions of the Ponns , which in
cluded the manor of Stoko. Anil yet on
March SI ) , 18(17 ( , Granville Joan Penn , lord of
the manor of btoko , died In ins chair with
an unsigned will in his hands. All lib prop
erties were inherited by hlsbrothor.Thomas.
Tbat gentleman , who was In clerical orders
ami a man of extraordinary learning , was
subsequently declared insane and incapable
of managing bis estates.
Those passed Into the tentacles of that
great English octopus , tbo chimcai'y court ,
und Ilnally , after the do.Uh of the unfortunate
nate'i'bomas , got Into the possession of
William Stuart , gentleman , of Aldonhnm
abbey , in the shire of Herts. Today the
Pen ns of Stoke Pogis are no more. The
romping children ot a country squire have
banished the tender wraiths that pconled the
homo and haunts of Gray at West End cot
tage , while the lord of the manor whoso
park Keeper iow uses as a farm house the
ancient homo of the Cobhams , tbo Cokes and
tlio lordly house of Hastings , wbcro Queen
Elizabeth was royally ontcruiinod.nnd whoso

Still no ono can comn to the sweet old place
without being touched by tbo tonflcr spirit
of repose which broods not alone upon
Stoke Pogis church and churchyard ; upon
tbo entlro Stoke manor , whore , half hidden
beneath sylvan shades , appears the very
place where tbo poet lived and sang , tbo
picturesque old ruin where once disported
lords and ladles , ana ovc-n royalty itself and
the grander seat of the Ponns ; but upon the
entire historic parish.
Interesting Environment.
All Its environment strangely stirs the
heart ana mcinorv. Over to the south is
royal Windsor , through whoso successive
epochs the whole vast book of English his
tory tnay bo written , from the Victorian era
to the time of Arthur , bis knights
and the Tublo Round. Milton wrote bis
"L'AHpgro" nt Ilorton , just below. Cooler's
Hill , consecrated to the muscot Dunham , is
nearer still. Ilersehcl made his ilrst great
discoveries in nstionomy in that old redbrick
mansion Just bovoud Slough on the high\v ay
to Windsor. Edmund Burke nnd Edmund
Waller lived at near Boaconslleld. Not two
hours' walk distant Is the grave of William ,
Penn. and quite-as near nro the famous Burn-
ham beaches , discovered by Gray himself
when upon his lirat visit to the roclon which
his genius was destined to inako ono of the
best loved spots on oarth. I visited thcso as
will all who coma to this spot where the
"Elosy" was written. But no pen can again
bo dolicioualy toll of Hurnham Beeches , and
the languid , la/y , easy gome Gray himself ,
as diet Gray's in this bit from one of his
charming letters to hts friend , Horace
Walpolo :
"My undo is a great Jiuntur in imagina

A writer III the Scotsman , Edinburgh , In

I irrfllen for The Itet. 1
In the observations of Mir it ua % boon as
sumed that tbo dark nreis soon are water
and the rod nre.-u land. Tals "may 'bo so.
And there tire other features soon , among
xvhich nra certain llnci , slnglo and double ,
which Scblaparelll ulalun to us canals upnu
MUM. Judclng from torrottrlnl analogies
there nro certain facts that should not bo lost
to sight.
In the earth's ntmosphoro the air currents
laden with moisture that are of low degree
of temperature are well known to bo white ,
seen almost any day in iho high or cirrus
clouds.
The nir currents , laden with moisture ,
that are of a high degree ot temperature , ere
well known to bo dark. The air currents
that noisess a. slight dogrea of moUturo , but
heavily laden with costnical or ether dust ,
or volcanic or ether sniOice , are well known
to be of red color , seen at almost any brigtit
morning or evening when looking at tbo
naliiR or setting sun or moon.
From the to facts It is not far-fotohod to
claim that the light areas seen upon Mars
are frozen clouds , the dark nroas rain clouds ,
and that tha rod uroas belong to air lilted
with eoJtnlcil or ether forms of dust.
Prof. William Pickering writes of the
rapid changes soon upon Mara ns follows :
"When the snow was meltint ; a dark chan
nel suddenly appeared nnd shortly dUap-
naarcd , and in n few days thu northern "sea
of Mars oularRcd , or its southern shofo bn-
c.imi ) darker , " concluding tbat "this can not
booxplainod by aerial ofTocfs. "
I would say wo have water pouring into
the earth's ' arctio area , but it docs not do so
suddenly anu suddenly disappear. Nor does
our Arctio sea enhrgc. An observer from
Mars should stn our oceans to bo blue , qnd
our land should look olthcr white or green.
Whoever is a resident of the Missouri
valley can notice tbat there are atmospheric
currents that , blow from the scuth Into the
arctic urea , and I dare say the arctio area
fills UD. And this movement is moro of tno
"sudden" character noticed ou Man than if
the movement was duo to moving waters.
And I have not the least doubt but at such
times the arctic snows molt , aud that the
southern shores of tbo arctio basin bavo
warm dark clouJa.
Then it sounds singular to toll of a "lako
that is now single , then double , then disap
pears. An observer of the prairie area of our
continent , noting the facts seen In our ntmos
phoro , can at times see atmospheric currents ,
now silicic , then double , nnd after a time
thcso streams of air will cnango and the cur
rents will commence to double up nnd form
themselves into a thuncor-hoad cloud nnd re
sult in a thunder stcrm. There uro no facts
observed upon Mars that have not tbl >
nualogv in our own atmosphere , and I doubt
If nn observer on Mars could sea through the
nllcgea SOU miles of donth of onrth's atmos
phere and sea the earth's surface.
