JIMMY THE GUIDE.
ll'dllcr H. On/re / ( n Cnllfonifa ilagatln * .
I go sluinniiii } : occasionally , nt least
once iv year , anil sometimes twice , nt
times with sorao chosen friend , but pref
erably nlonc. It is such a ehanpo from
iho botitcn path of everyday life ; so
tlilTetcnt from the plcnsnntsido of tlio
world that one observes at homo , in
f'lshioiuible salons , or at balls and co
tillons. Therein lies its charm , trans
itory though it be. One night recently ,
after a respiteof perhaps a year , I
donned an old suit of clothes and
other accessories to match it , put
a number of halves , quarters
and dunes in my pockets for ready
change , nnd proceeded carelessly toward
BarbiiryCoast , the fountain head of vice
and the haunt of criminals , nnd the most
debased of our male and female popula
tion.
tion.The
The Colorado , El Dorado , Arizona and
Scandinavian halls were all inspected ,
presenting to my eyes no change in a
year. The same faces were seen before
nnd behind the bars , the same waiter
girls "chased the duck" with ngilo feet ,
and their eyes were over on the alert for
a "slcencr , " or an error in change ,
while the same- motley crew of sailors ,
soldinrs and others wore being lloeccdas
usual. It was interesting , however , to a
certain degree , especially in tlio Scan
dinavian , where two feinalo "beer
jerlfcrs" woio severely pummohng n
friendless Italian , because ho , in his
mild , drunken stupor , objected to pay
ing twice for the sumo drinks.
I loft there BOOH and crossed over to
the Mui'blo hall , a largo underground
dive , well lighted , and crowded with
patrons. Walter girls ran to and fro
with drinks , and ns the asthraatie
orchestra played "Mary Green , " each
sought a partner and danced a species
of waltz , that would create a sensation
if introduced at the meetings of the
L'Yulay Night club. I ordered a pony
of beer and sat quietly watching and
studying the people there , endeavoring
in my mind to form some idea of their
vocation from their appearance. One
man , quite near to mo , attracted my at
tention particularly as thcro was some
thing reminiscent about his face and
figure. The moro'I studied him the
more my brain sought some aven.io
through which I couid recognize him.
until at length my thoughts
traveled buck through the vista
of time twelve years , nnd the
following narrative formed my mental
photograph :
In the early spring of 1880 a friend and
myself resolved to make a trip to YoSemite -
Semite valley. Kvory ono tried to dis
suade us , but ho insisted upon going , as
ho was from the east , and was obliged to
return to his home soon. Ho was thor
oughly determined toseo the valley then
or never ; [ so we started. Merced was
reached by rail and Mnriposti furnished
us shelter the second night , after a hard
stage ride of twelve hours ever rough
roads. The following morning wo secured -
cured saddle horses at Mariposn ,
and a guido in the form of a
diminutive colored boy , or rather
a man , ns ho was twenty-two
years of ago. Ills ntimo was Moso , at
nt least that was all ho claimed owner
ship to. Uo was almost a prototype
of the once famous " Little Mack , "
who was BO well known on the min
strel stage years ago , and his comical
nnpoaratico anil make-up put us in
good humor that cold , crisp morning.
Wo were assured that ho know
every foot of the mountain country ,
and wan honest nnd reliable. The
exprchs atront gave us this assuranoa ,
and coupled it with the information
that a lady and gentleman had preceded -
ceded us ono day on the road to the
valley. Wo struck out ever the hills
and mountains and reached Ilito's Cove
about o'clock In Iho nfternoon fooling
quitetired. . To our surprise the lady
nnd gonlloinr.n mentioned by the express -
press agent ware at the hotel and their
detention was explained by the inn
keeper who said that the lady wns too
tired lo travel ; so with the guldo they
had taken a day's rest.
The guido was a strange contrast to
our llttlo Mubo. Ho wns over six foot
in height , somewhat gaunt a to frame ,
though evidently powerful , nnd his
long , matted , rcddish-huod hoard
rented far down on his breast. His
oycs were the peculiar feature ol his
physiognomy. They were sunken
deep In the socket * and tufted almost
all around by his beard nnd his heavy
eyebrows that connected ever the bridge

its gold sustained a hiirh assay. Thcpo
miners were not the cfass of men that
ono would meet nt his club , and
although they pai tlally resented our
intrusion they gave but little out
ward evidence of it. Still we knew
onoutrh lo slon playing billiards In a
hurry , and took positions at the uud of
the long bur , adjacent to the doorway ,
lending to the hall ,
A few minutes Inter Carow's guido
entered , and as ho did so ho was greoled
with a shout and a chorus of blasphe
mous remarks from rough minors , who
instantly seined him , bore him to his
knees on the lloor and then covering
him with their revolvers made him
pray. Ho did pray and ho prayed well
and long. Then these demons made him
siiifr hymns , and as ho sting they formed
a circle around and danced H1 < o evil
spirits in high c.xrnlval. Kiich hymn or
song wan followed by a ilrintc , und they
eamo thick and fast. This was all very
cxcitinij and interesting to us "ton-
dorfeot , " aa wo had been dubbed ,
until some ono throw a chair at the
mirror boliind the b.ir. Then thirtv re
volvers ulii'/cd out nn an them toward the
coiling and wo disappeared through the
doorway in great liasto. Tlio fusilado
continued , and wo sought fresh air at
t.ho rear of the house. At last the shoot
ing ceased , and climbing carefully to a
back window wo saw that the barroom
was a wreck. Every mirror , bottle ,
glass and chair was broken and the
minors wore on the lloor in a state of ex
haustion , with the guido still kneeling
near the stove. Wo had no acsiro to re
turn to the scene of carnage , so wo
sought our rooms and wore soon asleep.
Wo arose tit 0 o'clock , und before break
fast bad an explanation of the previous
night's scene from the barkeeper.
"You sec , " said he. "it was all on ac
count of Jimmy the guido. He's ono of
them religious cranks called Seven Day
Adventurists , and all the boyn know it ;
so when ho comes up hero they just
have some fun with him. They never
hurt him nor anyone else and always
pays well for the damage done to tiio
bar. I always1 . 'tric.s ' to keep Jimmy
away , but sometimes ho can't help
coining. " i
Wo took the explanation , and
mutually agreed that wo did not
admire the California , miner's idea ol
fun. Jimmy tviriicd up early , looking
no worse than ever. Moso was on hand
with his widely expansive , grinning
countenance , aud.Mr. and Mrs. Carow
were ready for" llio day's trip. Break
fast was llnished'quicldy and" our party
of six were soon in the saddle. Our
journey commenced by making tin ascent
of the almost perpendicular trail up the
mountain Bide at the rear of the hotel ,
and it was a tailc for both horses and
riders. ' Jimmy , the guido , led the way ,
with our little" black man bringing up
the roar. They exchanged very few
remarks , and Jimmy always had pre
cedence in everything. At hist wo
reached the summit and soon after
wards had a view of mountain scenery
that has hardly a counterpart in
America. Fiorco-looking , rugged crags
arose apparently to the sky from the
pretty valley beneath us , and the im
mense layers of granite were tapestried
in fanciful designs with lloocy masses of
enow , cold , glistening relics of the winter -
tor that the sun was fast molting.
The scenery was that of Switzerland ,
nnd differed from that of the Yosemite
valley boyoncl it by being thoroughly
picturesque without any tinge of gran
deur or sublimity. Down wo went ever
the mountain trail , our horses carefully
feeling their way , until wo reached
the precipitous side of the
mighty chasm through which the
Merced river madly Hews over the im
mense fallen boulders of granite , seeth
ing and foaming in its wild course.
There the trail ended , and across the
chasm , eighty feet wide at that point ,
was a rudely constructed suspension
bridge , wrought of.bows of trees woven
together into a comparatively strong
framework. It looked like templing
providence to cross it , but both of out-
guides said wo must , as there was no
other way to reach the other side and
the Yosemite vailoy , Bomo fourteen
miles away.
Jimmy told Moso to cross first alone ,
on foot , to test the strength of the
bridge. Ilo did so and roturncd in
sufety. Then after rnufllintr the foot
of our horses in gunny sacks , to pro-
vout them from slipping on the smooth
surface of the bridge , Moso led his
horgo over the swaying structure , then
Jack's , and afterwards mine. Ho wa.s
about to take Iho other horses over ,
when Jimmy said to him , "Never
mind thorn' , I'll fix thorn myself. "
Then turning to Jack and myself ho
said , "Now you two can go ever , one
at a time , and wo will crosj afterwards. "
1 will pledge my word that all the
hoarded gold of the Indies could not
tempt mo to cross tlmt bridge again ,
Imagine that frail structure of boughs
swinging to and fro with the wind
that swept through the canon , with
only ono imrrqjv rail at either sMo as n

Jack and myself 'reached the other fiido
all right , and asjvo mounted our horses
wo noticed that Mr. and Mrs. Carow and
Jimmy were htifyi'iig quite a serious con
versation , judf'iiig from the expressions
of their faces , r'umlly Mr. and Mra ,
Carow stopped p/i the bridge together.

inquiringly at him ho said to me :

"Hut tlmt Isn't the thing , " I said.

"Can't do nnllln' now , Boss'copt go

This wo did over tin Indian trail for
miles , leaving .litnmy to make his way
back to Mariposa as best ho could.
After the experience wo had , our trip
was not n pleasant one. especially as
most oUt was on a narrow trail tlmt was
but a shelf in midair , with a thousand
foot of granite towering precipitously
above us and a thousand foot inoro of
the same below , with the Merced at the
bottom. Upon arriving in the Yosemite
valley wo put up at Ltcdig's hotel and
"
sUiyud tlicro two days. It "was impossi
ble to make the ascent of any of the
l-alls then , owing to the ii-o and snow
that covered them. Wo roturnoJ to
Mnriposa by way of Wawona , sulToring
much in a snowstorm that struck us
at Inspiration Point. At Marlposn ,
wo told our story to the authorities.
The shcrilT had heard of it from .limmy ,
the guide , who brought the horses back
safely and then suddenly disappeared.
We returned to San Francisco by stage
and rail , and soon alterwards Jaclc
wontf cast. I have never scon him
since nor did I over hear the linalo of
the Carow episode.
This story , in brief , was what flashed
through my mind as I sat in that dive
and ga/.ed at the stranger at the
next tablp. Suddenly ho turned
in his chair , and , getting a full view
of his face , 1 saw at once that ho was
Jimmy , the guide. I immediately took
a seat at his table and , tapping him on
the arm said to him :
"Hollo , Jimmy , have you boon up at
Mariposa or Ilito's Cove latelyV"
Ho turned quickly and said :
"Stranger , I reckon you'vo made a mis
take. "
"Oh , no I haven't , " I answered.
"You tire Jimmy , the guide , who was
with Mr. and Mrs. Carow in April , 18SO ,
who went from Mariposa to Ilito'a Cove ,
and then were Iciliod the following day
by the falling of the suspension bridge
over the Merced river. .1 know you.1
"Oh , yes , stranger , I reckon I rccker-

Then ho mused for amomentand said :
"I never expected to see you again. "
"No , noi- did 1 expect to see you.

This interruption for refreshments was
