THE SUPREMACY OF BRAWN
Illuslratod by the Annual Parade of the
Organized Labor Federations.
THOUSANDS OF WORKMEN IN THE LINE
l.nbnr' Hnlliluy Flttlnglr Observed by the
Workmen nnilTlinlr rrloniU Mayor
JlcmU Tulle * to the Tollcn
In Other Cities.
L.abor day dawned tlncly.
'Tho sovereignty of trawn was patent to
the thousands who took on active part In
the big domonUratlnn , nnd oa the additional
tens of thousands who lined the streets over
which the parailo passed the strength of
anltod labor was deeply Impressed ,
While la .c in stnrtinz , in many particulars
the parade was the best that Omaha over
has seen. It wus freer from unntlracllvo
features thnn usual and the mon who
marched showed that llfo to them was a
lorlous condition , not n theory. All the
branches of labor were strongly represented
ind coming upon the heels of the Homestead
disaster * , the strikes at Buffalo , the riots in
Tennessee , the display was an object lesson
to the crowds that viewed thepurudo , for In it
they saw the force of an united brotherhood.
There were lots of bands and Hundreds of
banners , nnd everywhere the marching
platoons were greeted with cheer * as they
wheeled into line from their respective posi
tions along Capitol avonuo. And the scones
along the streets were just as interesting as
the features of the procession. From house
tops and windows , from doorstops and bal
conies people watched the movements of the
men in line , nnd applauded ns sorno dUtlnc-
, tlvo feature of the union was displayed. It
was a good natured crowd , too , and heartily
, in sympathy apparently with tlio object * rep
resented by thu federation , njid with partici
pants and spectators in harmony asuccossful
demonstration wus made possible.
n tireut 1'iiriiclc.
Grand Marshal J. H. Bohupp wni early on
\\io \ cround and watched with pleasure the
streets become nllvo with men who were to
participate in the parade. It was nearly IU
o'clock when Chief Senvey wheeled into Cap-
ilol twonuo near Twelfth street , the loc.itiou
of the first division , ( hunted by four mounted
patrolmen and followed by sixty-live blue-
contra guardians of tno peace under the
command of Captain Connaek , Captain Mos-
tyn , Sortreants SlKwnrt , Whnlan , Ormsby
nnd Cnwos aud Patrolman Godola. Some
little dlnlcultv ensued over the formation of
the first division , the policeman wanting to
march to thomuslu of a'brass baud instead of
the drum corps , and this was finally granted ,
IN the Musical Union band being accorded the
honor of leading the procession.
When finally , at 10:15 : , the bugles sounded
"forward , " the First division moved up
Cnpltol avenue , and thcro was started a pa
rade imnosinc in its simplicity , awing in its
strength , and great in its educational ele
ment. Thcro was no attempt nt showy dros
or gaudy trappings ; no tinsel dimmed the
fact that honest labor was taking n day off
for the purpose of showing those who toil
not and think less that on tbo brawn ana
brain of the artisan and hU helpers is the
hope of the nation based. The bhire of the
brass band supplanted the clang of the anvil
nnd the roar of whirring wheels' ; tno noises
of the street were bushed , white the walls
of the solid piles of masonry and class travo
back in echo the measured cadence of thou
sands of marching foot.
Labor's army was marching by.
There was no hint of wrong unrlgbtcd in
that croat column , no unheeded cry for Jus
tice blazoned on tholr banner : ) , no throat to
use the giant's strength because possessed
thereof.Vhat banners wcra berne alert
told a peaceful story in their inscriptions ;
the mottoes 8hown were these all can on-
durso. And 'in % Urn great column WHS evi
denced the bulwark on which Omaha's pros
perity Is based contented workmen , well
organized for the good of their craft and
locloty , peacefully parading before the world
the fact that it is good for men to talco ono
day in all the year to show the growth aud
Btrcugtu of their guild.
I'nlllllc'il tliu Contract.
The divisions were made up in column
order as denotea ln.tho Drogr.im published
yesterany. Between (1,00'J ( ' and 8,01)0 ) sons nnd
daughters of toil for the women and girls
were out in force formed the army that fol
lowed the route designated , Alongtholinoof
march show windows anil buildings had boon
liberally dressed with bunting , and the dis
play of Hags , banners and gonfalons of
the marching throng gave un animated np-
Doarance to the streets. Thousands who
could not take cart in the nurado stooped
their work long enough to watch the great
procession pass , anil they , wl'h the citizens
who have no part In Labor day save as on
lookers , crowded the streets along which the
route of the parade lay.
When the line of Kiiirch had faithfully boon
traversed the marchers nnd their friends
Uiod away to the bosky dolls of Svndlcnto
park , wliero they were Joined bv thousands
who were not permuted to march , and all
took a hand in dotnollshlui : a barbecued ox
und other things , korvod with a condiment
earnest oratory and the relish of fresh air on
a well earned holiday.

By Tiolence ! No. By anarchy ! No. By
riot and turbulence and bloodshed ! No.
It In to bo brought about only In the manner
vro witness today by peaceable agitation
and by orderly proceedings. It is by those
means the working man of this country propose -
pose to demonstrate the Justness of their
onuio. and to provo not only that "tbo
laborer is worthy of nls biro , " but is on-
tltlrd to such compontntlon for his labor ,
and to such reasonable hours of toil , as will
enable him to support a family comfortably
and decently and live like a roan among
men with sotno of the comforts and pleas
ures of life.
"It is to bring about such results that or
ganized labor oxitts. Organized labor nnans
organized peace. In peace will all find rest
and comfort. Nut tn the rod glare of burnIng -
Ing temples do worklpgu.on expect to read

Justice do they hope for that end to
come. What cannot bo accomplished In
such a way by such an nrmyf VVnat a
magnificent , grand army is the army of
labor ! Alexander tha Great ne\'or dreamed
of such an army. Cfciarinhts cloi-y never
commanded such an nrmr. Murlboronirh.
and his great successor , Wellington , would
bavo been ovorcoma nt the more thought of
meeting such an army. Even thut match

Napoleon , would hava stood appalled before
fore it.
"But , Mr. Chairman , great and powerful

c.xUt only to win tha battle becnuso It li in
the right , and to so win by means that all
men must approve and auplaud. "
Vim U'yck Kichawcd 1'olltlcs.
The next speaker was General C. II. Van
Wyck , who was to oucuss the labor ques
tion. Ho nrefnccd hU address by stating
that ho would endeavor to stor clear of
politics and in this ho was voty successful. Ho
pointed out the wrongs of tbo laboring classes
and the greol of monopoly with bit usual
vivid coloring , but forborn to draw a politi
cal moral. He loft that to his hearers , but
Romcliow ho always managed to round his
sentences in such a way that there was only
ono moral to draw , nnd that pointed sugges
tively toward Van Wyck and his party. Ho
advocated the abolition of Pinicortoas nnd
the army nnd the settlement of all differ
ences before a humunu and Judicious tribunal
of arbitration , ami suggostoJ that the contest -
test of ballots would cxoouto the freeman's
will a * effectually as the lightning the will of
God.
Talked Ilumo Industry.
D. Clem Denver spoxo on homo Industries.
Mis address wus very brief. He said thut
there was no reason why wo should not
make Omaha a ercal manufacturing city if
the people would only combine to patronize
homo industries. There wus no reason why
the people of Nebraska should go east to
buy their canned goods when the finest In
the world were put up at various points in
the state. The plaster , silicon.nnd uaamant
works in Omaha bad built up un excellent
business , but most of it went outside of
Nebraska. Nebraska soap could bo bought
as cheap or cheaper than that manufactured
1:1 : the cast , and the Nebraska boot sugar in
dustry needed the patronage of ovcry good
citizen.
The speochmaulng concluded , the crowd
centered around the barbecue , whore a hugo
ox was served to the hungry multitude , and
dancing was the prozram lor the remainder
of the afternoon.

The answer of the Union Pacific Railway
company to the petition of the Chicago ,
llock Island & Pacific Hallway company ,
llled in the United States circuit court Au
gust 25 , was lllod yesterday iu the same
court.
The answer of the respondent admits that'
a decree was issued restraining It from In
terfering with the Hock Island in the USD of
the bridge nnd local acpot facilities , and the
use of which the Uosk island has
slnco enjoyed , but denies that the Union
Pdclllc has over used the Rook Island's road
botwceu South Omaha unu Lincoln or be
tween McPherson and Hutchinson. Uo-
spondnnt also denies that the Rock Island
completed its South Omana-Lincoln line by
the time apocilied by the alleged contract
and maintains that tbo company that used
the Mel'norson-Hutchinsoh line was the
Salina .Si Southwestern Railway compnny ,
and claim * that the said company has fully
and satisfactorily settled with the Rock
Island for the use of tbo same.
Respondent , demos that It Is indebted to
the Rook Island for the rental of said lines ,
and further claims that neither under the
power , authority or franchise conferred on it
by congress or by the legislature of any state
has it the right or authority to run or oper
ate trains over the lines of tbo Rock Island
above referred to , &na that tuo terms of the
contract to that end are ultra vires , null and
void and of no logul binding force or obliga
tion. Respondent further claims that the
complainant has umplo recourse iu a court of
equlty _ , but that Its suit should bo.for breach
of contract , if for anything , and not for ren
tal alleged to bo due.
It is further claimed that the Rock Island
did on August 81 garnishco certain mouevs
in tbo hands of other roads , duo tbo re
spondent , and that the suit is now pending in
HIP circuit court cf Cook county , Illinois ,
and that tbo suit of the Rock Island in this
case does not properly . .belong before this
court or before any court of equity at the
present tlmo. It is finally claimed that the
original injunction case is now pending in
the United States supreme court , unu that
during said pondauey this court is ousted
from any Jurisdiction to hear or determine
any matters or things arising out of or-pend-
