appearance. Agricultural products are
heaped up in boundless profusion , while line
horses and blooded cattle , fat porkers nnd
bleating sheep glistening in their white wool
jackets qf the latest fall pattern , patrician
roosters whoso lusty crowing can scarcely bo
distinguished from tlio notes of ttiolr plebian
prototypes of the barn yard variety , caudily
uniformed bandsmen , red Jacketed rouuves ,
horse jockeys , lemonade venders , news boys ,
wen , women nnd children , nil combine to
muko n picture that is seen but nt ono place
In Nebraska and thut place on the state fair
grounds. It will bo useless to make any esti
mate of the number o'f the pocplo who are on
the grounds today or who will bo there on
the succeeding days of the week. The word
"thousands" expresses It ns no other word
can.
can.It will bo useless to attempt nny general
description of the many exhibits on this , the
opening day. There nro too many of tuotn
and too much yet remains to bo dona before
everything is in prosontnb'o shaoo. This
much can bo said in advance , however ,
jllvory department Is full and moro than full ,
with possibly the exception of the atrrlcul-
turul and horticultural divisions. Three
hundred horse stalls are occupied by as
many macrnlilccnt specimens of the equine
race , while au equally large number of cattle
of every blooded vutlotv nro on the grounds.
There are COO puns filled with fat porkers ,
there being ever 2,500 animals on exhibit.
The sheep pens nro filled with nearly f > 00
tlno specimens und additional room is being
provided for more. Tbo exhibits in mer
chants hall occupy every nook nnd corner ot
the building nnd the arrangement has been
made with evident taste and skill.

C. T.Vilcox. . Movers hnd camped near the

soon producea a blaze. Laura's dross caught
flro but It was extinguished by ono or the

but the child's clothing must hnvo still boon

BEn.j Saturday was the day that , the Gor-
maris of llarlan county'nnd adjoining coun
ties mot at Republican City ana bad a grand
Kood time. At an early hour tbo Uormans
commenced coming In. Owing to the heavy
rain In the morning , the crowd was not as
largo it would have boon , but fully l.OOJ people
ple , mostly Germans , came to par
ticipate In the picnic. McPborson's
hall was crowded to its utmost capacity.
At 8 o'clock the delegation from Crow crook
headed by Horvev Stovor came in towm
Peter Roland , marshal of the day , took extra
pains to maUo overythlng us agreeable as
possible. Mr. Roland with his big rod sash
on mot the different delegations and escorted
them to town. About 0 o'clock the big dele
gation from Turkey Creek came in , headed
by a four horse tearg loaded with thirty
young ladies driven by E. Fritz , with G. H.
Hobmaii as marshal of the delegation. The
entire delegation was alive with enthusiasm.
They paraded the main street as far east , as
Prod Fox's hardware , thence west to the hall.
Owing to the rain they were compelled to
abandon the grove which had boon llxod up
and seals arranged by Marshal Roland.
As soon as they had been assembled in the
hall an organization was effected. Roland
acted as chairman of the mooting. The
program consisted of music by Prof. GIllos-
plo nnd singing by the young ladies of
Turkov CreoU. The ladies had been practic
ing for several days , and to say it was a
success is drawing It very mild. Then came
the speech. Not a word of politics wan
mentioned. Not a drunu man was seen on
the streets the entire day , notwithstanding
a great many schooners ware emptied.
Mr. Uottlepp Rebmau delivered an oration in
German. It was very good and cheer after
cheer was continually given. Christ Ebliuger
was in his glory , singing nnd full of enthusi
asm. Flogs and bunting were on every place
of business. A beautiful largo bunch of
grapes , as largo as a bushel basket , put to
gether by the Turkey Creak Germans , was
was brought in on the wacron with the ihlrty
young ladies. This line ptoco of work will
bo on exhibition at tbo stale'fair.

Two Grand Inland Women Engage in a

to THE BEE.J Jerome & Son is the firm
nnmo of a livery firm in this city. The
father is quite an old man and justat present
nil invalid. Ho sold his son an inte'rost in
the business , upon which the son made a
payment of some hundred dollars. A com
plete settlement of the transaction baa never
boon made , though apparently sought for by
iho son.
Last Friday the "son had a conversation
with his father about a settlement and it was
nqreod that himself and wife should come to
the room Saturday afternoon and arrange the
matter. Mr. Jerome and wife bold the ap
pointment , butshortlyaftorthoy bad reached
Elder Jerome's room tbo son was called down
into tbo barn on business matters. A dis
cussion arose between Mrs. Jerome and her
futhor-lu-law and Lidn Jeromo. The wife
of the old man informed tbo other woman
that she bad a Ion ? sharp knlfo and would
kill her. Sha rushed into the kitchen and
came back with the weapon. Upon being at
tacked , Mrs. Jerome took up an umbrella and
used it so dexterously as to daze her infuri
ated assailant.
Sha then knocked her down and hold nor
until aid arrived. Tbo senior Jerome is ill
and con lined to his bod. 'Had it not been for
her corset Mrs. Jerome might have been fa
tally stabbed , tbo woman directing her
thrusts at the heart. Both the women were
urrostod , placed under bonds , unrt the pre
liminary trial will take place tomorrow after
noon.

17 years , shot Edwin Bender , aged 11 years ,
in the right leg with a revolver yesterday on

Bender boy was visiting at Coloman's nnd

it at youug Bonder. Ho pointed it aeain ,
when young Bender started to run , "Tbo
revolver was out of repair and could not be
fired by using tbo trigger nnd Colomnn took
his knife and sliuck the hammer , firing the
revolver , the ball striking young Bender In
tbo right leg. Young Coleman says bo does
not know why ho shot the boy , as bo did not
want to hurt him.

George Nolan , a 3-jroar-old boy , was Kicked
In tbo head by a horse yesterday afternoon
and his skull was fractured. The wound
upon the head was fully six inches in length
nnd the fjacturo of the skull extended nearly
tbrco Inches. That death did not result is n
miracle , as the Injuries were of a voiy dan
gerous nature , and two troplno operations
were necessary to save the child's life. It is
thought that ho will recover with proper
care nnd attention.
The injured child Is a son of Thomas No-
Inn , who lives near Bollovuo. Mr. Nolan ,
wife and two children , attended Iho labor
parade in Omaha , nnd on their way homo in
the afternoon , about 3 o'clock , stopped at an
Albright grocary stora to make a few pur

Thirteen saloon men have failed to pay
their occupation tax Of OO each , and there
is trouble in store for Iboso thirteen dealers
in wet goods. The ordinance creating- the
