Severn ! thousand people wont out to
Twonty-fouilb nnd Amos avenue .vcsterday
aftcinoon to see Prof. UclUcn'a balloon as
cension nnd paruihutc drop.
They saw him ( lion , but the parachute
didn't hnvonchanco to got In Its work , nnu
the piofeisor's buoyant spliIts wcro sadly
purturbod when bo ca.no suddenly back to
earth with a mournful plunk. Ilu didn't do
It , however , with malice aforethought , so
the crowd's disappointment cannot bo pop-
crly chargoit tn his account.
Tlio professor's Intentions were all richt ,
but his plans miscairied ticcausu nf an un
foreseen accident , hut for which ho would
undoubtedly have carried out the pro
gram prepared by the street railway com
pany In order to encourage travel.
Two motor poles had been erected on n va
cant lot , and from a cross rope fctrolchcd be
tween them was suspended the huge canvas
bug during the pioccss of Inflation Bach
polo was held in position bv guy ropes and
to that fact Is duo the trouble that followed.
When the rostralnlni ; ropes that liclu tlio
swnjlng balloon were cast loose the
inflated monster I'apcU Into the
uir , nnd the proiessor went with
it , seated on a trapeze nnu smiling as com
placently as a Ctrl In the arms of her host
male friend. Hut smiles at best nro but veg
etables , born to decay , and this one vva > oven
srortor lived than the average , fur baforo It
had expanaed to its fullest diameter It lost
Its grip on too professor's face and passed
Into history.
But llko republican success , there was n
reason for it. An untoward lurch bad
swung the tinpeza to one side before the
tops of tbo poles were cleared , and the ad
venturous aeronaut caught under one of the
guv ropes.
Unfortunately , the balloon bad not been
posted a * to tha course ll should pursue In
cases ol this kind , und aid not stop for the
piofojsorto disengage hlmseif , but with a
HP und n tear , nicked loose from
ull restraint and sailed sedately off
Into spaco. On the other hand , the
professor , whoso soaring ambition had all
peon squeezed out of him under the guy
rope , aadlv dropped from bis perch and
tumbled to terra llrma in a shroud of dirty
canvas tied up with Imlf-incb ropo.
Down came pole , trapeze and pnruohuto
close behind him. 'Iho great crowd which
had uttered a sort of co-operulivo groan
when Iho accident occurred and had rushed
forward to offer ttympatbotln assistance to
the supposed badly Injured aeronaut ,
changed Its wind whou It saw ttao object of
its Hollcltudo disengage himself from tbo
wreck apparently uninjured , und at once
begun to kloK in unmeasured terms and de
nounce him as an aerial fakir and hippo
drome r.
The baleen , meanwhile , was indulging In a
series of gyrations and paroxysms , each ol
which throw out puffs of smoky hot air , and
Hftor traveling a few hundred yards to the
northwest it totally collapjou and fell to the
ground inert and lifeless.
Bclden at once decided to try It
over again , and the balloon was
loaded Into an express wagon and
hauled to the original location , where the
pole was onre more sot up , und after noces.
nary repair * had beou made , the great bug
was again suspended aver the furnace.
Yet oiice more was tlio crowd , or what
there was left of It , doomed to disappoint
ment , for the curious ones crowded in ou the
protestor in u wav that beamed to hurt hi *
tooling * , and after telling them several limes
to keep back bo completely lost what little
temper tie had loft , na thcu Inviting all
those within hearlni to go to a more torrid
ell mo bv a more direct and ouccoisful route
than the ono ho had attempted , ho hnulcd
down his aerial convojnnco And left the
vlclnitv.
That was all , nntl the people who went
out nycar ago to sco the air ship shouldered
their cxpcrlcnco of IbW nnd wont homo.

The camp was excited , there Is no doubt
about it Everybody was on the street ,
and everybody hud an opinion to ex
press , but notwithstanding all those ab
normal conditions the acting marshal
of the camp was given the alternative
of leaving the town within twelve hours
by the stngo or bo sent across the range
by the ropf route. Cnuld anything bo
more satisfactory or fair to nil p.irtlosV
Suuli an incident of logical application

Into cltuut.
It is hardly nocosstry to sla'o that the
town was dumfoundcd , bumboozlcd ,
p-raljved and senseless when both piop-
ositions vvoie refused. The maishal is
still in town , and tlio people aio trying
to icco\er from the shoolc.
Two inlnuis wcio desirous of settling
the tinioworn grudge with nature's
weapons and were repilring to a 6uita
ble spot when the mirsh.il stopped up
and ariestcd ono of them Ho objected
to the dogred.Uion to the camp thut
would ensue fiom such a scone. The
east might hear of an encounter in a
Colorado mining camp without slx-
sli octets , and withdiaw in vestments.
The marshal was somewhat tough with
his prisoner t\nd struck him with a
revolver in the face. Fiionds of the
man interfered and threatened to take
the pribonor away. The marshal diovv
his gun. The people foil back and no
one attempted to argue with the acting
representative ot law , if not
of order. A block fuilher on ,
and the marshal , for some reason ,
found it necessary to assert his right to
the pi isonor'u jawbone again. Things
began to look serious and the crowd ,
which was quickly inure ising , began to
hoot and hi83 i.tul yell at the marshal ,
who Hindu a forced mat oh to the jail , a
little log cabin.
On his return uptown tlio marshal was
followed by the throng , which was still
incteasing. Ho slopped opposite the
Continental hotel and addiessod his
enemies.
Ho challenged anyone to come for-
wai d and light liiinu la Queonsberry or a
hi Millb.ink , and if the 'vould-bo lighter
had not a revolver for the latter btylo
lie would gladly furnish one. This was
pictty stiong to a crowd of l.OJO people ,
but tiioie were no takers , The maishal
seemed to own the town. Ho marched
up and down the stieots and into all the
' 'tough joints" in town , looking for a
scrap. Ho had liia gun handy , while at
a respectable distance the cowd jeered
and hissed.
There was nothing else talked ot about
town all night , and the mot u the atTair
was talked of the more did the ciowd
got excited. Something had to bo done.
A gathoiing VMIB held at the Flagstaff
ut 10:20 : p. in. Several mining men of
importance vvoio In attendance. Tlio
action of the marshal was dealt with in
scathing terms.
"Let's lynch him ! " shouted a tender
foot from a distance.
"Ycu , lynch him ; hnng himl" came
from u liund od throats.
"Don't do anything that would relied
on the town , " slid Captain Fun lab.
"Send a deputation to 'give him notice
to leave tlio town or be bunged.1
This wiser counbolpirti illy prevailed ,
but bomohow a committee could not beget
got together to appioich the marshal.
In tlio meantime the more excited
and determined appearing vvaio getting
loady for supreme action. ' "Bridle Kill1'
had been giving exhibitions by lassoing
an uruhin paid to bo lussood. near at
hand , and his rope was secured. The
lasaoor was only too glad to give it up ,
although hia belt wan stuck lull of pis

tols."Iloro'a
"Iloro'a the rope ! Hero's the rope !
Lot's hang him to the llagpolo ! " cried
the loadois of the detachment.
A roar went up that could bo heard on
Mount Pisgiih. and it began to look
dark for the inarHhnl. The more peace
ably inclined hoped that ho could not bo
found. '
"Who's the blankotv blanked blank.
blank Unit's speaking of lynching ? "
demanded the marshal , as ho walked up
to the center , the crowd clem ing a wide
passageway. Ho had a Bixahooter in
oauh hand.
"Now , coino and hang mo , you , "
roui od tlio olllcer , at * he brandished the
revolvers.
The crowd consulted n very short

Springer of Illinois Is thus tba ofllcial head
of the forces gathered to attack the protuLt-
ivo system as It exists la the United States.
Uo assumes to luivo ( something more- than
"a elli'tit knowledge of the science of po >
Ittcal economy" and ho bus ventured to out
line the plan of attack In a carefully prepared
speech doltvorod recently at Detroit. In this
speech , bowovor , ho not only displays an
utter non-comprehension of economic
method but also descends to the lowest
depths of domagogv. The whoto of his so-
called argument turns upon the ciy that the
policy of protection Is responsible for
ill the evils , disasters and cilamitles that
mvo bo'allcn this country for the past thirty
yoir * . The plausibility of a few of his
points demands for them a tnoro careful con
sideration.
The llrst accusation that Mr. Springer
brings against the protective t.ulfT is tint It
has occasioned all the business failures nnd
consequent loses to creditors In recent

To bocln with , tt is not n fact that the
