to TUB Br.n.J The summer meeting of the
Kvorotti Haclng association ot this place
opened up today under tbo most favorable
ridanfccs. Wblln thonttondanco was lair , It ,
was nothing llko what It should have bio n
Considering the remarkable character of the
i nttraotlons , Without exaggeration , It was
one of the most magnificent trotting cards
over witnessed Iu Nebraska , if not In the
Whole west.
A history of the track may not come amiss.
Two weeks ago Andrew Kverott & Son pur
chased the track and structures of the
Lyons Driving association , which was lloun-
ilorlng In deep water , and this is tha
ilrst meeting under the now roelmo. Mr.
Kvorott is ona of the oldest and bast known
farmers of ull this lovely region. Ho Is n
largo lanu.ownor nnu a very wealthy man ,
extensively oneugcd In brooding line trotting
fitook nnd Durham cattle. It WAS his prldo.
solely , for the town of Lyons that Induced
him to assume the responsibility of n race
track , and U Is tin assured fact that ho will
maintain It In a style that wilt ere many
campaigns give It a national reputation.
Tno track , which" n finished klto , wns
only completed last Juno , but todny It is the
equal of any in the world , nnd Is so pro
nounced by nil horsemen who have visited
it. It boasts of 175 line box Malls , every ono
of which Is occupied by an animul of greater
or lessor note. It is constructed so that the
trenches running entirely around the course ,
both within nnd without the track , can bo
Hooded with water from the Logan within
twelve hours , which Is of incalculable ben-
ollt In keeping it In perfect condition. The
boll Is tough uud springy , calculated for the
very highest rate of speed and never becomes
"cuppy. "
Good Dny nncl Vine ItacoB.
The afternoon was warm , but lust right
for speed. The jugdos were S. W. Stauftor
of Tokamah. J. O. Yeoman of Onawn and
Vf. D. Smith of Lyons ; starter , James
Culbcrtson of Abilene , Kan. , ana Timers
Bert Everett ot Lvons , Bud Lntta of Tuka-
mah ana Thomas Cabtnoy of Sail Francisco.
The first event on the card was the 2:40 :
pace , $ .100 purse , with six starters as follows :

Tbo Ilrst heat was n rattling tight ono ,
Lucy Smith beating King Priam out by a
shoulder ; tlmo , 2:2 : ( > X.
The second , after another grand struggle ,
was captured by Murltana , with Lucy at bis
Shoulder blade. Time : 2UO.

In the second heat the Hag was waived and

2-year-old record , held by Manager and made

formnnco also beat the state record , being
tba fastest mlle over paced or trotted In any

performance und the horsemen here are nil

llciiMV , Aug. 2. [ Now York Herald
Cable Special to Tun Bnt : , ] Von Qaprivl
has made n bold attempt to iHqjtt.roy Bismarck -
marck , to discredit Count Wnldoritca and ro-
tnln Imperial favor. Ho has , It would ap
pear , tailed slgnnlly , and vtiow , Instead of
'
leading an attaclc on his ch'l'of foe' ho Is en
gaged In defending his own place.n , task
ulilch may prove too hard for him.
No sooner had the emperor returned from
his Norwegian trip when the chancellor ro-
ncwcd bis assault on Bismarck nnd von Wnl-
dorsco , whom ho now seems to halo as
fiercely n bo does thp cx-chancollor.
Recalling the success of tits former
clTorU , ho presented bis master with
another bundle of ever 8JU hostile newspaper
articles , clipped from the foreign press , nnd
including various extracts from the Herald.
Thoao articles wcra accompanied by nn elaborate -
orate report , which , it was hoped , would
convince the emperor Of the malignity of the
two men to whoso Inspiration the uu-
favornblo ciitlclsnii of tba papers
wcro attributed by tbo cbnucollor.
Cuprlvl Wan Very Inslatijnt.
I understand Cuprlvl , w.ho'waa laboring
under consldcrublo oxcltcmont at tbo tlmo ,
took speciul pulns to direct attention o the
uttacKs which were moro particularly ntmod
at the emperor and endeavored to pe uado
his majesty of tbo necessity of vigorous no
tion. The emperor was advised by tbo chan
cellor to hava racourto to legal moastiros and
to stop tbo pros ? war which has been raging
for wcous past.
Thanks to the Intervention of a moro torn per
ate counselor , perhaps Count Phlllo Eu'on- '
burg , his majesty declined to toke Caprivl'fl
advice and was brought to understand that )
publio opinion would not bo with him If ho
went much further In his present policy.
A report of.Oencral von Huhnico ou Waldor
seo's case , in which the chlof of the military
council declared that the count's recant oub-
llo utterances In the Herald and otbor papers
were injurious to the discipline of. tha army
and dangerous to tbo government , had no
moro suicoss than the action" of Caprivl.
The emperor curtly exclaimed , "Dlo Vor-
iluochtosaoukerpln , " and refused to" discuss
the matter.
Nor did all the determined efforts of von
Luc.inus , who was hurried up1 to sunport
Caprivl and General Von Hahnko , Induce
tno young monarch to take a nasty decision.
Meanwhile I am assured Waldorsoo bus
written n long letter to the emperor , ex
plaining and protesting against the insinua
tions of his adversaries. His majesty would
seem to have been favorably Impressed by
this communication.
The attempt of Capnvl to raise funds for
a projected now paper have not so far , I
bear , been crowned with much success. An
agent of the chancellor has , It seams' , approached
preached several Berlin bankers on the sub *
joot , butthoy have put him off with evasive
answers ana do not show much eagerness to
co Into'n.schemc of which/tho chief objects
nrb to support o/iot / particularly stublo min
istry ana tOrfoago war on a great statesman
llko Bisroarqlc'aild his friends : * ' tV'U
iioanwhilo 'tbo chancellor has , 'I tinder-
stand , summoned a Gorman consul from a
post ho fills-in a northern cnpltnfrind re
quested bis assbtanco In reorganizing tha
reptilian pross. Tbo consul in question has
bad experience which ills him for the task.
In Bismarck's tlmo ho baa a simitar work in
trusted to him. When Bismarck fell ho
turned his coat , llko Pindter , and other gon-
tlamon who now do tbo chancellor's bidding ,
nnd made his peace with tbo now gods.
Ho is a skilled journalist , and would ,
no doubt , not hnvo moro scruples
about throwing mud at bis ex-patron * than
the editor of the Norddoutscbor Allgomoino
Zeltung has been troubled with.
Ono of the Ilrst results of the now pact has
been tbo circulation of the curious talcs with
regard to Waldcrseo , which that gcntlomau
himself contraalctcd a few days ago through
the Horald.
Bismarck's party continues its assaults on
Caprlvi. Tbo statesman has boon particu
larly annoyed by tbo publication of an un
pleasant llttlo pamphlet entitled "Kaou Ca-
prlvi Blorben. ' ' Tbo pamphlets published
hero latterly do not prove much , but make ill

told how much the mon thora wcro

expected that the verb "to waver"
was eradicated from the mental vocabulary
of Homestead workmen. T. W. Brown , who
presided , told the mon that tboy could expect
very valuable support from trades unions
not only in this country , but abroad. In sub
stantiating this , ho road letters offering aid ,
not only from different parts of America , but
from England and Scotland. A union in
Dundee particularly desired to send money.
An important feature of the mooting was
the report of the commlttco which wont
