" Some Council Bluffs bovs have made a practice of doing small jobs of lawlessness of late In the country just east of town , and nn- le s something Is done by their parents the chances are that they will got Into serious troublo. They have been breaking down grape vines and apple trees , throwing stones through windows and committing other depredations of a moro or loss serious nature. Nearly all the windows in Urcon's packing house hava been broken by them. Saturday afternoon four boys of this Ulnd were loafing about Qrecndalo , on the Uncle Island nnd Milwaukee roads , and they con ceived the idea of piling n lot of rubbish on the track for the fun of seeing what would happen when the train struck it. It was no sooner said than doao , and n big pita of fence mils , timbers nnd such other obstructions as hippnucd to bo at hand soon adorned the track. The boys then retired to a secluded spot to await developments. They camo. In the mean time tha boys had discovered that their fun was knocked In the head , nnd they undertook ! to sneak out and run for homo. But ono of Iho section mon happened to sno them nnd started in pursuit. The chiiso was for aunut two miles , and when It ended the boy was a prisoner. FIELD'S STORY OP THE LOST CABLE' Haw tlio Ciibln LiMt nt Sen w.is llcc > vureil lu Mlilocrun. At u dinner given to Mr. Field by the Now York Chamber of Commerce on November 15 , 1800 , ho told about the re covery of the cable which was lost in the ocean's bed , in those words : "After landing1 the cable safely at Newfoundland , wo had another task to return to midocean and recover that lost in the expedition of last year. This achievement has , perhaps , excited moro surpiiso than the otlior. It was the triumph of the highest nautical and en gineering Hidll. Wo had four ships , and on board of them botnn of the bcht seamen in England men who know the ocean as a hunU > r knows every trail in the forest. There was Captain Moriarty , ' who was in the Agamemnon in 1837-8. ' Ho was in the Great Enstnrn last year and saw the cable whan it broke ; and ho and Captain Anderson at nnco took their observations so exact that they could go right to the spot. After finding it , they marked the line of the cable by a row of buoys , for fogs would como down , and shutout eun and stars , so that no man could take an observa tion. These buoys were anchored a few miles apart They were numbered , and cacti had a UagstniT on it , so that it could bo Boon by day , and a lantern bv night. Thus havintf taken our bearings , wo stood oil three or four miles , BO as to como broadside on ; and then , casting over the grapnel , drifted slowly down upjn it , dragging the Inttom of the ocean as wo wont. At first ( I was a lit tle awkward to llsh in such deep water , but our men got used to it , and soon could cast a grapnel almost as straight us an old whaler throws a harDoon. "Our fishing line was of a formidable sl/.o. It was mndo of rope , twisted with wlro of stool , BO as to boar a strain of thirty tons. It topic about two hours for the grapnel to roach bottom , but wo could toll when it struck. I often wont to the bow and c.tt on the roue , and could fool by the quiver that the grap nel was dragging on the bottom two miles under us. But It way very slow business. Wo had storms and culms and fogs and squalls , "Still wo worked on day after day. Once , on the 17th day of August , wo got the cable up , and had It in full sight for flvo minutes a long , slimy monstur , fresh from the ooio of the ocean'B bed but our mon began to olioer so wildly that it scorned to bo frightened , and suddenly broke away and went down illtO tllOBOII. "Tills accident kept us at work two weeks longer ; but finally , on the labt night of August , WB caught it. Wo had caHt the grapnel thirty times. It was u llttlo bo/oro / midnight on Friday night that wu , hooicod Iho cable , and it was u llttlo uftor midnight Sunday morning when wo got it on hoiked , What was the uiLxloty of these twonty-nlx houis ! Ttio strain on every man's life was like the strain on the cable iUolf. When llnally it appeared It was midnight ; the lights of tfio ship and in the boats around our bows , as they Uuahod iu the faced of the mon , showed them eagerly watching for the cable to anpoar on the water. "At length it was brought to the sur- fnco. All who were allowed to approach crowded forward to see it. Yet not a word was bpok'on , only the voices of the ollleors in command were heard giving orders. All fait as if Ufa and death hung on the ipsuo. It was only when it was brought ever the bow and on the dock that men dared to breathe. Even then they hardly bollovoa tholr oyos. Some crept toward it to feel of it , to bo sure it was there. Then wo carried It along to the electrician's room , to see if our long sought treasure was alive or dead. "A few minutes of suspenseand a Hash told of the lightning current again sot free. Thou did the fooling long pent up burst forth. Some turned .iwity tholr bonds nnd wept , others broke into cheers , and the cry ran from man to man , and was hoard down In the engine rooms , dock below doc * , and from the boats on the water , and the other ships , while rocKols lighted up the darkness of the son. "Then with thankful hearts wo turned our face again to the west. Hut soon the wind rose tind for thirty-six hours wo wcro exposed to all the dangers of a storm on the Atlantic. Yet , in the very height and fury of the gale as I sat in Iho electrician's room a flush of light earno up from the deep , which , having crossed to Ireland , came back to mo in midocoan , tolling that these so dear tome mo , whom I had left on the banks of the Hudson , were well and following U9 with their wishes and their prayers. 'This was like a whisper of God from the bca bidding mo keep l.o.xrt and hope. The Great Eastern bore herself proudly through the storm as if she know that the vital cotd which was to join the two hemispheres hung at her stern , and BO on Saturday the 7th of September wo brought our second cable safely to the shore. " Afterwards in speaking of his greatest work Mr Field bald : "It has been a long , hard struggle , nearly thirteen years of anxious watch ing and ceaseless toil , Often my heart has boon ready to sink. Many times when wandering in the forests of New foundland , in the pnlting rains or on the docks of ships , on dark nights alone , far from home I have almost accused myself ofmadness and folly to sncritico the peace of my family and all the hopes of my Hfo for what might provo aflor all but a dream. "I have scon my companions , ono and another , falling by my side , and I feared that I , too , might not hvo to see the ond. And yet ono hone has led mo on , and I have prayed tliat I might not taste of death till this work was accom plished. That prayer is answered , and now , beyond all acknowledgments to men is the fooling of gratitude to Al mighty God. " Mrs. L. An alloy of great service for filling holes in castings and for othe ; .purposes may be made by molting together nine parts of lead , two _ parts of antimony , and ono part of bismuth. The premises on which Mr. Blalno based his arguments were that the Brazilian government hud promised to grant to the French company the oxcluilvo right to control all the cable business be tween Brazil and thoUnitodSlntos , and that by the ostabllshmant of this monopoly the Mexican , Central and South American Cable company an American cot portuioa desirous of running lines to Brazil would bo dented a participation In the business. The Socleto Francalso dos Tolegraphcs Sousmarlas , ns thofrrouoh Cable company Is officially designated , already owns several lines In nnd about the West Indies , says the Now York Times , nnd , in order to bring Into Its control Iho Brazilian circuit , has , within the last few months , effected a lauding at the port ot Vczcn in Brazil , at the mouth of the A.nazon rivqj- , whence the land lines of the country stretch to Para and to the south ward , touching at nil the principal towns nnd cities of the republic , as far down as Monte video In the republic of Uruguay. The run of the submarine cables so far laid down by the Soclolo Francalso is as follows : From Vczon to Cayenne , thence to 1'ura- marnlbo , both Uulana ports , thence to Mar tinique and Guadeloupe , French West India Islauds , thence to Porto Pluta on the north ern shore of San Domingo. From Porto Plata a land line crosses ttio country to the town of San Domingo , where the cable is again met loading direct to Curacao , and thence to La Guayra , the main seaport of Venezuela , whence interior places are reached by land lines. ' 'Returning to Porto Plitn , It Is found that the French cable goes by sea to St. Nicholas Mole , on the coast of Havti , and thence to tbo capital of the Blaclt Republic , Port au Prince. In addition to this short , line to Port uu Prlnro , the French caolo extends across the bottom of the Windward Passage from St. Nicholas Mole and comes to land at Santiago do Cuba , the present tormluut of the French system In American waters. The Importance of those lines of cable com munication to the world at large will be bat ter appreciated when it is known that alt the places mentioned nboyo ewe their electrical connection Guadeloupe and Martinique ex- ccptcd to tbo submarine cables laid down by t no Socle to Fntncaiso ; for no other cable company In these waters runs lines to the same places. It therefore follows that the French company m\ist. \ receive a certain amount of patronage. For example , to roach Unytl or Venezuela , a mcssaeo must como overland In the United States to Point Rassa , In Florida , where the Western Union cable will take it to Havana by * wav ot Key West. Thence it will cross Cuba to Clonfucgos , where the Cuban SuUmaiine Telegraph com pany will dispatch it to Santiogofrom which pluco the French company will transmit it to Its destination. There is another important cable system traversing the waters of the West Indies and connecting thn Utijtod States with South ' America. This line , tfio property of the West India and Panama Telegraph comoany of/England , has lu headquarters at Kings ton , Jamaica , whoncq th9cables radlato as follows : Ono lino'to Santlago'doCuba and thenco"as before stated to the United States , and so to Europe. Another line runs from Kingston to the Virgin island , St. Thomas , and then down through every ono of the Windward croup to Trinidad , and thence to the mainland at Georgetown , in British Guiana , Stilt another line radiates from Kingston direct to Colon oa the Isthmus of Panama , thence the way lies across the land to Panamawhere the lines of the west coast of North and South Amorlca are mot , thus bringlni ; Into communication "all the many olaccs along the west coast at fur south as Valparaiso. And even ns Valparaiso the continuity cannot be said tn bo Droken , for there is a land line stretching from Santiago in | Chili across the Auder and tbo pampas fo Argentine into the city of Buenos Ayres , \\herousliort cable is met that leads to Montevideo and thence to the principal places along the cast coast of Brazil. The cable lines down the west boast of Central and South Amerli-n nro not the property of the Panama and West Indies company. So much of the wires as run from Panama to Callifo belong to the Central and South American Telegraph company. From Callao In Peru down to Valparaiso in Chili thcro are two lines ; one , itnown as ttio West Coast 'of South America Telegraph company , Is au English corporation , and the other is u now extension laid last year , be longing to the Central and South American Telegraph company. The former company operates a way cable only , whPrcas thVlatter company makes but a sfnglo stop between Callao and Valparaiso , ntlqutque. Thus the Contra ! and South American company owns a complete cable- way from Panama to Valparaiso. At tbo terminus at the southern end of the line con nection ts made witn the transanJcun laud line , and so the oust coast , as above told , is brought Into the circuit. But the wlros of the Central and South American Cable com pany do not terminate at Panama en the uorth. Instead , tlio.v run up the west coast of Central America , making u.ills at the moro important ports until Sulluus Cruz i& reached on the coast of Mexico. At Salinas Cruz this Western American system crosses southern Mexico by land wires to the port of Coatzucoulcos , on the shores of the liulf of Mexico. Thuro u sub marine cable Is ugaln laidJwbluh leads to ( Ja'.vcoton In Texas. This section of the long line of olcctrluil cable system is operated under Iho auspices ot tbo Mexican Telegraph company. Thai Is to say , the Mexican und the Central anu South American Telegraph companies nro ono und the same orgaalza- , lion , aud their headquarter are in New York , so thut the system belongs to tb oeoulo of the United States. They are thu lines extending along the bottom of the China and Japan seas and" servo to bring into electrical connection nil the places of the orient. This system rmn from Singa pore and does not stop until the Chliioto and .Tan.inoio cilles are touched. T banco Vhvll- vostocic Is reached over cables belonging to the Great Northern company. TnU remote Russian po > t Is also brought into touch with tha west uy moans of a long overland wire that cnmoj Siberia nnd terminates at St. Petersburg , The main directions of the principal cnblo lines ot the world htwoonly boon briefly indi cated , nsagluncoat tha cable chart will nt onou show. It Is objcrviiule , too , in looking at thn chart that the only body of water that Is not crossed by a caolo Is the Paclllo ocean. There cuu bo no doubt us to the noeu of a line bringin's Japan nnd the Sandwich Islands Into quick commiiiilcatlou with the United States , and &uch a cublo would bu sure to succeed , for the business tluit now has to go ever the oast-jrn lines bv the route Indicated that Is , via India nnd the Mediter ranean would llnd quicker nnd moro accu rate dispatch could ll como direct to the United States aud then cross ever to Great Britain. The laying of cables Is cxponslvo. The probable cost cannot bo far from $1,000 a mile ; this Includes tbo making and the laying of the cables. Present cxpanenco gives from ihlrty to forty years ns the probable loncrth of life of a modern submarine cable , but much depends on the mode of preparing tha outer strands of wlro protection , espe cially the galvanizing. Then , too , the nature of tbo bottom of the sea , the rocks , etc. , como Into the quoitton. There are Instances where a cable has lasted only ton years. It is found than there are In round numbers 1U5.000 miles of cables , all told. Of this length Great Britain owns nearly 01,000 miles , of which tbo English government owns only 7,500 miles. In the list of owner ship of cable lines Franco comes second with 20,000 miles , of which 5,000 belong lo the government. Tbo United States stands third , our throe companies controlling something ever 10,000 miles of submerged telegraph wires. Germany's only cables are govern ment owned , and are loss than 3,000 miles long. It is the same with Italy , but her ongth of line Is about halt that of Germany. Thu only other country operating lines Is Denmark , where a single private company works ever 0,800 miles ot wlro. To lay cables requires a specially equipped steamer , and , ns submerged wires are con stantly suffering damage from some unavoid able cause , it Is necessary to have always roauy for service ono of these cable ships. The tolugrapblc fleet Is composed of no loss lhan thirtv-nlght steamers , aggregating moro than 00,000 tons. Twenty-six of these vessels are the property of the private lines of England. The government lines control only two. Tbo French lines nro looked after by four ships , two of which are private property. Thcro are no cable ships belonging to tbo United Statot. In case ot damage , It is customary to biro an English vessel. Tbo old ship Great Eastern used to bo the most celobratcd of cable ships. Since her demise the English steamer Silvortou.of 0,000 tons , is probably the best known. There is also a French cable ship of the same tonnago. Caolci are difllcult to manufacture , requir ing considerable complicated machinery. In general terms a cable consists of an inner core of copper wires surrounded by a mix ture of soft rubber and jute tibcr. Tbls in turn is usually covered by four layers uf pre pared gutta porch a. Then comes a winding lu hemp or Jute , well coated with a tarry preparation , and Unally the whole Is guarded against injury from the rough shocks of careless handling and uneven ocean beds and rocks , etc. , by on-outer layer of soft stool or iron strands. There are two largo cable factories in tha world one the Construction and Mainten ance company of England and the othertho French company at Calais. Tbis last com pany Is a part of tha Tclecrraobcs Sousmarms company , thut has boon making so earnest an effort to secure a landing on American shores. Labat was suffering1 from a violent at tack of malarial fever. In the nipht she took advantage of the momentary ab sence of her nurse , and , in a lit of de lirium , jumped out of the window of her room , located in the fourth story. Hap pily her gown was caupht by the hooks of an iron gallery , and she remained hanging in mid-air. The cool night air rapidly reduced her fever , and , becom ing1 conscious of her dangerous position , she set up fearful screams , which boon collected a crowd in the street. An employe of the Lyons railroad named Varonnos , olTorod to rescue iho woman if there was borne ono to lower him from the roof of the house. A ilro- mau offered to hold him. A long rupo was procured nnd tied securely around the waist of Varonnes. The lireman standing on the top ridge of the roof slowly lowered the rope until Varonnes , swinging down In front of tlio lioiibo , could roach Mine. Labal. With his loft hand ho suizod hold of the iron gallery ind then took firm hold of the woman. But her weight was so great that his left hand slipped from the railing and they both were suddenly suspended in mid-air. The suddenness of the pull , for which he was not prepared , nearly throw the fireman oil his foot , a calamity wtiich ho bticcneded in averting by clinging to a stout chimney stalk rising above the roof. Ho had u linn hold of the rope , but was unable to pull up the load so as to enable Varonnes to reach the window. So , steadying himself against the chim ney , ho lot the rope glide down very slowly until Varonnes and his precious load could set foot on the ground. Thqro was n ringing hurrah from the anxious crowd when they were able to lay hands on the woman and Varonnos and holi ) them to IIrm ground. The fever of Mine.
