MYSTERY STILL SURROUNDS HIS END

The mystery ns to the whereabouts ot Dr.
E. K. Sloman has booa cleared up , but the
question of how ho got tharo is still unan
swered , nna the affair Is surrounded by a
mystery that all efforts to unravel seem only
to deepen. The search that was made by
the friends of the missing man on Saturday
lasted all day , but at night It was given up
as n bad ] ob , not the slightest clue being ob
tainable.
A grcai sensation was caused Saturday
afternoon by a false report that was set In
circulation by Coroner Soybert , to the effect
that the body had boon found. The report
was communicated to the friends of the miss-
dig man In Omaha , \\lio telegraphed It to
Mrs. Sloman at Detroit. The report had tote
to bo afterwards contradicted by another tele
gram , mid consldernolo unnecessary anxiety
was caused thr > unfortunate- woman by the
LOioncr's fake.
During Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs S.
K. Mitchell , MM. C. J. Mitchell and Mr. Ned
Mitchell , while riding on the lake , saw the
head of n man floating In tbo water on the
outside of the lake opposite the hotel. They
reported what they had seen and a search
was mudo tit luc point in question , without
avail.

Yesterday morning about 0 o'clock the

was the body of a nun. Ho rowed as quickly

secured assistance. Ueturnlnir to where the

Identified ns t'io body of Dr Sloman. It was
changed , howo\er , until the Intimate friends
of luo dead man could hardly icali/.o that It
was the body of their triend. It nud Deon In
the water over forty eight hours , and the
wnim weather had caused decomposition to
sot in.
In the meantime Coroner Sovbart and
Undertaker W. C. Estop had been notified ,
and the bed > was soon taken to iho under
taker's. In the cvcnlnc Itvas dispatched to
Detroit , Mich , lor burial.
An inquest will bo held this morntnc at 10
o'cloclc , when it Is hoped that some of the
mastery connected with the death will bo
denied up. Thoio iue several theories as to
the cause. There were i.o marks of
violence on the body , and on thn
dead man's por&on were found n gold watch
and chain , u diamond ring and some small
chance , showing that no roboory had been
committed or even attempted The watch
was found to have been stopped by thu water
at 7 ; : > 0 o clock , but it nod evidently run for
quite n while after ho fell Into the water , us
when the body was found there were only u
few drops of water in the warm.
Some aio of the ooimon that the dead man
was pulling his boat into shore when ho lost
hU balance and fell from the dock into tno
deep water. This theory nceojiiU for the
fact that the boat was found floatIng -
Ing rigtt side up and dry inside.
Tno men connected with the hotel
admit , however , tnat when Dr. Sloman left
the hotel Thnr day night to gn out on thu
lake for the row that cost him his lifo ho
seemed to be in his usual good spirit ? .

yesterday , There was a tired , sleepy nlr to

The few who gathered In the amphitheater

.shall como from the east , and from the we l ,
mid from the north , and fiom the south , and
shall sit down In the kincdom of Ciod. " It
was n broad-canged sermon. In picturing the
university of thu chuich ot Christ , ho made

many others whoso service to mankind malco

The consurvatUra of ttm casi , the enterprise
of the west , the Intellect of the noi th and
thu emotions of tlio south were all given a
pluco In this kingdom , which was iricatcr
than any church or sect. The preacher expressed -
pressed his dclmht that this century , In
stead of building griut cathedrals , was

worship of the cnuich should bo the service
of humanity. It was n mistake for the
church to unnounua divine service Sunday.
It Khali bo a divine service running through
the week , making every merchant's counter
an altar , e\ory butcher's block nu

There should Do In the church unity , but
thorc should bo no foolish attempt to sucuro

the moment a Chinaman was converted ho
must put on the garo of n Uuropcnn of the
nineteenth century or else his conversion

Hut the Immediate purpose o' this article ,
says the Philadelphia llocoid , Is to call at
tention to tlio distribution of tno Inhabitants
of tbo United States according to sox. In
most countries that have boon long sottlcd
and are not subject to Immigration the fa-
males are slightly In excess of the males a
law which seems to prevail largely through
out the animal kingdom. In Ijiigland there
are 101 females to 1UO males ; In Scotland , 110
females to 1UJ males ; In Ireland , 10. ! females
to 100 males , and in bwcclon , 100 females to
100 males. The pioportlon between llio saxes
In these countries Is largely intltioncod by
emigration , as It Is influenced In the United
St ites by Immigration , bianco , onthoothor
bund , which Is little affected by emigration ,
shows n little over 111 females to 100 male
inhabitints. In Belgium , also llttlo dis
turbed by emigration , thu pioporllon of fe
males is 10U. I to 100 males. In some coun-
ttlcs of Huropo there Is , owing to transient
causes , a sllgui tendency to an increase , and
in others to u decrease in these proportions
between the se\css.
Hut in the United States the rtilo Is com
pletely reversed , the proportion being only
ntnoty-llvo females to each 100 males. The
cause readily assigned by Superintendent
Porter fur this great disparity between the
sexes Is in the larcc tnctcasc of immigrants
since ISSO , over three-fifths of tbo entire
number navlug been males. Immigration ,
ho.vover , does not wholly , or oven pattlally.
account for tlio great disparity in the local
distribution of the populition bv sexes. In
Kow York the foreign-born Inhabitants ntlm-
bor I.n l,0u0 , and in that state the females
outnumber the males uy 44,0(57. ( In Penn
sylvania , on the uthur hand , Iho foreign-born
Inhabitants number bl'j.'JO , while the iiial < > s
nro 74,01 $ in excess of the lomalcs. In a
foimcr article wo have shown that In Penn
sylvania the gioit disparity between the
sexes prevails or.ly In those portions of the
state ( the coal and lion regions ) which have
attracted foreign labor. In nil other parts of
thu state the proportion of the sexes is
normal , us it Is in Kuiopj.
Turning , however , to other states that are
llttlo affected by immigration , it Is dlfllcnlt
to account for the undue numerical disparity
between the sexes in the census returns ol
1MIO. Massachusetts contains Ol" , Ili" In

Going southward , much groatcrdlsuaiities
are ooservablo In iho distribution of the

quate explanation. Kentucky with a foreign-
born population of . " > ' . ! . . ) " > ( ; onlv In n total of

In Arkansas , with ll,2it ; inhabitants of
foreign birth. In a population of lUs.l7i ( , the
males aio 4 i531 ! In excess of the fennlcs.
Mississippi has u total population of 1'JsO-
OJO , of whom 7.i.VJ ' arc foroiL'tiers , and in that
state the males are 11,701 in excess of thu
females. On the other hand , in Louisiana in
a population of Illb,5S7 , containing 4,747 ! ) of

there being 5"i9,350 males and.5VJ-M7 females.
In Alabama , containing a population
of ltiij,017 ! : , of whom 14,777"nro of
foreign birth , the males nro lb'J5 In
excess of the females. What are the social
conditions that cause such a disparity bo-
twcon the sexes in communities that are not
much affected by immigration , and in which
the people differ little in pin suits and cus
toms ( Tbo census returns afford no answer ;
but there is an answer If it bo diligently

uny school boy will toll us , the earth is
ball llattonud nt the poles. The Hut-
toning , while comparatively tnslijnll-
cunt , h still sulllciont to make
the polar diameter twonty-oiirht miles
snorter than the equatorial diameter.
In other words , the north nud the south
polo nro fourteen miles nearer the
earth's center than is the equator.
Now , the distance from the north polo
to tlio equator , measured alonj ; tlio
earth's surface , is 0,000 mile" , und the
dlhtanco from the source of the month
of the Mississippi Is about 1,500 miles ,
or one-fourth of ti'iOO. If , therefore ,
there is u dilTorenco in level of fourteen
miles between the north polo and the
equator tlio Youth's Companion urines
that there will bo u dilToroneo in lovcl
between tlio source of the Misalssippl
and Its mouth of one-fourth of fourteen
miles , or three und one-fourth miles.
But the territory watered b\ \ the Mis
sissippi hus boon olov.Uod bomowhat by
volcanic or similar forces and the actual
excess in hulfjlit of the liver's mouth
is reduced to the three miles Hrst men
tioned.
How is it possible for the river to run
up hillV When , eons uijo , the him had
thrown the earth from its surface like u
drop of water from a swiftly turning
wheel our plooo became a lingo ball of
molten lode , itfcolf swiftly revolving in
sptico As it gradually cooled It shrank ,
and by shrinking its \cloclty increased ,
just as u Htono tied to u string and
twisted about u boy's linger revolves
moro tapidly as the string winuN about
iho finger. When the ci'iiti ifugal force
had so inci eased as to exccod gravi
tation n huge mass bliot oil from
tlio earth's cqu itor and became
the moon. Still , the centrifugal
force retained ample powc-r to ex
pand the earth's equator , and to i otain
it in tills form until cold and rigid.
Nor hus this force yet abated. As it
drew toward the equator Iho earth's
material when plastic , it still continues
to attract in the same direction all the
lluids upon the earth's suifacc. In this
way gravitation is paitially ovotcome ,
and the Mississippi liver Hews steadily
up its throo-milo hill to the Mexican
gulf.A .
A second question is suggested : What
would ensue if the revolution of thee
o irth should be by some moans gradually
rotatdedV The 'Mississippi would be
come more und more sluggish ; the en
tire valleys and the gro.it lakes would
swell into an inland sea , and the Gulf of
Mexico would seek through them its
way to the north pole. If the curth
should cease to revolve altogether , thu
oceans of the equator would fo"sako
their beds and hasten towuid the poles.
Probably the entire globe north of the
latitude of Boston wou d bo submerged.
'I lie .Mcint Itlanc Olisoriutorjr.
A second attempt is to bo mad3 to
build an observatory at the top of Moat
Blunc , - ays Nature. As the workmen
who tunneled last year through the
snow just below the summit did not
come unpo rock , M. . iTiinssen has decided
that the building shall bo erected on
the fro/on snow. A wooden cabin was
put up , as an experiment , at the end of
lust summer , und in January und earlj
in the spring it was found that
no movement had occurred. Accord
ing to the Lucerne correspondent of
tlio London Titnos , the observatory is to
bo u wooden building eight metres long
and four metres wide , und consisting of
two doors , each with two rooms. The
lower floor , which is to bo embedded in
the snow , will bo placed at the disposi
tion of climbers and guides , and the
upper lloor reserved for the purposes of
the observatory. The roof , which is to
bo almost Hut , will be furnished with a
balustrade , i mining round it , together
with u cupola for observations. Tlio
whole building will rest unon six : powoi-
ful sorow-jaeke , so that the equilibrium
may bo icstored if there bo any dis
placement of the snow foundations. The
building is now being made in Purls ,
and will shortly bo brought in sections
to Ch.iinounlx. The transport of the
building from Chamounix to the sum
mit of Mount Ulnnc and its erection
there have boon intrusted to the charge
of two capable guides Frederick I'a.vot
und Julea Bosscncv.
