As a Jioarii of Kounllzutloii , Work Tor the
City Council.
The oily council will moot this evening at
5 o'clock as aboard of equalization. If the
members anticipate a short and uninterest
ing session tboy will undoubtedly bo disap
pointed. Complaints upon the returns made
by the assessor are coming in with groal reg
ularity , and the kicks are very largo. The
owner of real ostuto objects to bis assess
ment nud states It Is too nigh , and tbo sauio
is true of personal property owners.
Tbo complaints como from people all over
the city , and the clerk's ofllco was crowded
with people yesterday looking up their
assessments , lu most cases they did not go
away without u complaint being loft
for tbo council to consider. The
more Important complaints are us
follows : Holmes and Smith , tbo owners
of tbo brick block tM03 : M street think an
assessment of $ . > , ( H)0 ) lee high and ask a re
duction to $3,000. Tbo owners ot the Al
bright Choice addition deslro their assess
ment in thut property reduced , as it is as
sessed several per cent higher than that of
corresponding valuo. C. F. Huntzlnger's
lot nt Twouty-sixlb and K streets is unim
proved and .assessed at $ .530. Ho says $300
would bo a fair figure. T. F. Elliott believes
he has been done an injustice and asks that
the assessment on his property at Twenty-
seventh and II streets be reduced from ? lj ( )
to SI00. There are many other complaints
and the above is bul a sample lot.
Tbo personal list is largo and the com
plaints "nro numerous. The American Water
Works company is down for $7,000 and asks
that tbo amount bo reduced to M , ( > 00. D.
H. Huston's stock of hardware lf > | returned
atlr 00 , which that gentleman considers too
high by STXK ) . S. M. Press believes Sl.OJJ to
bo too blch a value on his personal property ,
and wants it reduced.
The council will consider all these com
plaints nnd a great many moro nnd a long
session is promised before Its labors are com
pleted.
