Xobmskii nnd Her Metropolis.
President Crosby occupied the position of
tonstnmster ana ho ilrst introduced Mr. S. S.
English of Eacle , who spoUo to the toast :
'Kobraska and Omaha ; their relations. "
Mr. English congratulated Omaha upon
the fact thai the relationship between the
metropolis and the sttuo had grown moro
cordial and moro closely allied during the
Dust few years. Thuro was a time when the
unreasonable prejudice nijiilnst Omaha in the
South Platte country kept many of. the mer
chants lu that section" from patronizing
Omaha manufactories and jobbers , but thnt
prejudice had passed away. The citizens of
Nebraska , of every section , wcro prouJ of
Omaha , They wcro proud of the stalwart
young metropolis und its great industries , its
rislug manufactories ana its talented men.
[ Applause. ] Mr. English said ho honed thut
iho Nobruslta Central bond proposition
would curry , so that the ci'y of Ouiaha
might ranrcu runjlyoii. His remarks were
heartily applauded.
Mr. H. fr1. Uodgin of Omaha spoke upon
"Homo Industry. " Ho gnvo a brief hut
comprohoLsivo rorlow of the homo industry
movement , ascribing tbo real beginning to
TUB OMAHA lien , ana touchintr upon the
\\onderful success und very satisfactory re
sults of the untorpnso , as shown
by the exposition now in progress at
the Coliseum and by the tremendous
luctoasa in the patron ago of nearly every
line of Nebraska manufactories. Mr. Hod-
gin received close intention ana was heartily
applauded.
J. b. Bishop of Lincoln addressed the as
sembly upon "Tho Commercial Directory
company ; its ratings. " Ho explained the
advantages to business men , particularly
retail merchants , of having the rating book
compiled anu furnished by the Commercial
Directory company. Ho held that
the rating book was a protection
not only to the merchants , but to tbo
honest customer , because by this plan
the merchants experienced fewer losses ,
und. consequently , coula sell cheaper to the
honest purchaser.

The over Interesting topic of "Finance"
was assigned to Mr. A. J. Hopkins of Omaha.
His remarks were conllned to tbo apace ot
ton minutes , and ho simply took occasion to
touch tbo free silver question , saying that
the problem was ono that would'notaown. It
bad to bo settled , and settled oropcrly. Ho
was opposed to free silver coinngo for
the reason tbatsuch a step would place tbo
United States upon a par financially with
such countries as Mexico. Mr. IlopKlns
was in favor of the gold standard. London ,
ho said , was the clearing house of Iho world
at present.
"I am in favor of making New Vork the
clearing house of the world. [ Applause. ]
And how can it bo donoi Not by adopting
free silver coinage. " Ho was in f.ivor of
holding an international confercnco upon tuo
stiver question , nnd if possible to ngrco upon
an adjustment of the values be
tween gold nnd silver , if such
a thing could bo dono. This sttitomont pro
duced a round of applause. The gold stand
ard was tbo natural standard for the United
States , Mr. Hopkins held. Nations that bud
smalt financial transactions could got along
with cheap metals for money , but countries
having larco financial transactions , having
business men nud linns who conducted atu
pendous enterprises , must have gold for
money , because a small quantity of It repre
sents largo values. Some of the minor
countries of the glebe could cc
along with brass nnd pewter for
mediums of exchange , but those base metal
would bo too cumbersome for a great country
like ibo United States.
Mr. Hopkins favored tbo idea of stopping
the purchase of silver br tha government , im
mediately to lot the silver drift toward Eu
rope , where it belonged. A wnvo of clapping
hands llko the sounu of many waters rushing
followed the speech.
J. C. Dort of Uurchard made a few pointed

tions.
In that portion of the city near Twenty-

ponds , which tbo Jury found uro caused by a
lack of proper drulnago and incomplete
grading. In its report the jury says tbo
droivning of young Bowman Is not the first
fatal accident traceable to the Oilitonco uf
