was , of course , on the ovontnc ; program , it
called out a much larger nltonaanco than did
the drill contest * of the day.
The camp was , as usual , qulto deserted
during the morning hours , and tha Ctiaffeo
( Jailing section of Denver , Captain It. A.
Ktncald , put up Its drill before a gathering
of spectators consisting chiefly of inomoors
of tUo various other companies In camp.
In the afternoon a few more than 1,000
visitors passed through the gates and wit
nessed the drill of tno Dallas Light Artillery ,
Captain R V. Dlytbo ; the Governor' *
Guards of Denver , Cupiilii William Ilolntcr j
National Fonclblos of Washington , Captain
C , S. Domor ; and the Uhlcaco Zouaves ,
Captain T. J. b'ord. The drills of those
companies were extremely xvoll executed
nnd tnanpcctntors could not but bo generous
with tlioir applause. Tim quartette of Indies
tuslpicd to each company occupied n con-
snlcuouB pliieo in tha Juilgos' stand during
the tlmo that their ro poetlvo charges were
on the drill ground.

refrain from applauding the precision with

photographed with Its loynl lady friends ,
bud the ladles were "taken" in their oar-
rlacrcs by themselves for the bonollt of the
boys.

Hut even this did not end last evening's
program , for at tha request of the soldier
boys members of the Gentleman's Roa-lstor
club gave n couple of races. Owing to the
length of the arlll nnd the darkness they
were not completed.

of brigadier general , who shall have a stilt-

of the regular army. The object of this de

It Is believed that a department of this

Saturday's program includes an interest-
inc demonstration of street lighting under
direction of Colonel Ulchards. This will
show t'uo work of troops In hollow sQuare
and the machine guns on the Hanks will deal
deatn nnd destruction to on imaginary mob.
Sundav will bo an interesting day at the
camp. The following excellent program will
to strictly carried out : AtO u. m. , guard
mount ; 10:30 : , sermon by Doan Gardner of
Trlnltv cathedral , in the grami stand ; a p.
in. , Individual drill for the Raymond gold
medal for the best drilled soldier In camp.

the company to which ho belongs. As the
men make blunders they will bo dropped out.
After this , oxhiDltlon drills will bo given
by the Inclliinnpolfs Light Artillery , Dallas
Artillery , iCollingor battery , Omahu Guards ,
Chaftoo and Cincinnati Catling sections , and
by some of the best Infantry companies lu

give a drill. Each man participating is over
six feet tall , nna the uniforms will bo these
of nearly every company In camp.

The Nebraska City boys were In hard
luck. They arrived In oamp about noon
Thursday without their Baggage , the train
having boon delayed. They had to rustle up
straw and borrow a few blankets , but In
splto of all that could bo done spent a bad
night.

Judge Ferguson took up the trial of the

the defendant on account of personal Injur

Hhow that during tbo night of Novomoor 27 ,
1B1K ) , he was driving a horse and carriage west
on Bliinoy stroot. At the intersection of
Twenty-fourth street bo was struck by ono
of defendant's motor tralus uud burled off
Into space. In returning to earth , which
was several seconds later , ho collided with
the pavement. The collision came with
aufllclent force to break three of Mr. Cam
eron's ribs , besides bruising his head , logs
nnd arms. lie now charges that ho was
Ignorant of tbo approach of tha motor train ,
und tbat the motnrman failed to sound the
danger signal at tbo crossing.

court tno case of Airs , John Ulngwalt
against the \Ynbash railroad Is the drawing
card , In this cmo the plaintiff maintains
that while she was a passenger on ono of
defendant's tralus her trunk , which
coutaluod jewelry and diamonds of the
value of $500 , was broken open. The spark
lers were extracted und now the company i >

the bill.
In tno case of Hobort II. Oluutead , admin
istrator of the Bstato of Willie
Daniels , deceased , npainst B. H. Post ,
the jury returned n verdict , finding that the
plaintiff was entitled tol,5S3 aud costs.
In the Criminal Court.
The criminal court , Judge Davis presiding ,
disposed of the case of the state against John
W. Saunders and Cora Peterson , charged
with unlawful cohabitation. The dofendast ,
Saunders , is a black , burly , uncouth negro ,
while the codofcndant is n modest and
rather pretty Swede girl , The Information
charged that the two persons had lived to
gether ns man and wife from January lii
until the date of their arrest , which was
during the latter part of March. Tno jurors
listened to the distrusting testimony , aud
after bulng out ton minutes re
turned a verdict of guilty. Saunders was
Immediately brought up for sontonco. Ho
was ordered to jalt to remain six months , bo *
sides paying a fine of $ . " > 0 and costs. Tbo
sentence , however , was suspended , providing
Saunders would leave the city within two
days and never return. Ho promised. The
girl , Cora Peterson , was sentenced to pay a
fine of 2100 and do six months In the county
Jail , but in her case the sentence was sus
pended so long as she remains upon her good
behavior.
Kato Summer Camp is on trial. Tbo
woman , who was the head Jerker In n
boor pardon opposite Fort Omaha last sum
mer , is charged \vlth having retailed liquor
without first having secured a license. The
information charges that Nora Dooley was
tbo purchaser.
Samuel Wolluan and Aivin Leosuro , the
two lads who were charged with having
stolen lead pipe from a store building on
South Eleventh street , were arraigned this
morning and pleaded not guilty. Their
parents furnished ball and the cases were
continued until the September1 term.
Judge Irvln has granted a temporary in
junction , restraining the sheriff from soil
ing tbo leasehold Interest lu the Inton which
is situated thu store formerly occupied by C.
A. Stonobill , who wont to tbo wall a few
days ago. When Stonohill fulled some ot
the creditors attached this leasehold. The
sheriff advertised It for sulo , the publia
auction to bo held Friday afternoon. Now
Gerald L. Stonehlll has slopped In and under
oath says that ho purchased the leasehold
from C. A. Stonohtll on May 13 , long before
tbofulluro. Saturday morning Judge Irvln

Charles V. Mlddloton , a colored soldi sr,1
charged with making a criminal assault upon
Mrs. Luzla MoElroy , who resides near Fort
Robinson , was tauon up this morning In
United States court. Tbo accused wai de
fended by a colored lawyer , Mr. Silas Rob-
bins. .
The assault was rnauo fan the 18th of May ,
while Mrs. MoElrdy' " was on her way
homo from Crawford , Nob. , nnd
within about one mile of Fort
Robinson. She was driving a team
and wugon alone and ovartook Mlddloton on
foot. Ho asked her If ho could ride and she
permitted him to get into ' the wugon. As
they passed through n , 'deep ravlno Mlddlo
ton suddenly seized tho' .woman , stopped tbo
team , and throwing bH < vlctlin to the uottom
of tbo wagon box bo forcibly aud brutally
accomplished his purpose.
Mrs. MoElroy tosUnoditbat ' she struggled
with till her might to frc'o herself from the
villain and culled loudly for help. But
there happened to bb no ono near nt
tha timn tno assault was ; mado. Before tbo
negro bad relinquished his hold upon the
woman , however , a meat wagon came along
and Mre. McElroy attracted the attention of
the driver by her screams for help. When
the negro realized that ho was about to DO
discovered In the Uoudlsh act bo sprang out
nf tbo wagon and ran over the hills , reach
ing the post by a ctecultoUH route. This is
the story as told by tbo plaintiff aud it U
supported by a rather conclusive chain
of avluonce. The moat man will , It Is
understood. Identify Mlddloton as the man
bo saw spring out of tbo wugon and scamper
away over the hilts.
Tbo defendant will endeavor to prove an
alibi. The policy of the defense ls to shew
that there was Hi feeling between tbo moat
man and tbo defendant , und that tt.oro
a conspiracy entered Into by the woman nnd
several other parties , including the meat
man , for the purpose of getting Mlddlotou
discharged from the army In dlsurnco.
Mrs. Mlddloton was the first witness
placed upon the aland by the prosecution.
Her story was substantially tbat outlined
above. Mrs. McBlroy U n frail , plain , coun
try woman who bays she has lived thirty.
