MUs Curry comes from the Henley Busi

The exercises lust evening were under tbo
control of K. U : Maybow of this oily , who
brought Miss Curry bore for the purpose of
convincing the publlo that the Smith I'rom-

higher rate of. spjod than any other inacbltio
that bus yet been placed upon the market.
The exhibition last night was convincing
evidence that such is Iho caso. In tbo flrst
exorcise , which was a dictation , Mtsu Curry
reached a psoa of ninety-eight words per
mlnuto ana every loiter aud word was cut
as clear as though the rate of speed bud
not boon half so great. Upon another trial
Mils Curry reached 114 words in dictation.
In this tbu JubtUlcuuon and tbo stroke of
the letters were absolutely perfect. Then
tbo old oxorclso which nil typewriter opera

tukou up. This familiar scntouco
wus rattled olt at Ughmlng speed ,
utiu according to the wutclies held
by tbo Judges Miss Curry made 1IK1 words
per mlnuto. Following this she wrote 170
words nud at the sumo lima carried on an
animated conversation with Tom Wilson , the
well known court stenographer , The great

Certainly not that his machine will do

No sane employer would toloruto fern

Some manufacturers , I tun pleased to
see , ttpprcciato the fact that such tests
provo very little. Thuy employ thorn
for the purpose of proving to themselves
thnt their machines will respond with
accuracy and precision to marvelously
rapid manipulation , but they do not
spread broadcast accounts of what has
boon accomplished nnd attempt to mis-
lend the public into believing that such
rapid work can bo done in the course of
ordinary business.
I have before mo a sample of work
recently written by Charles H. McGur-
rin of Kulumaxoo , Mich. , in which 100
words were written in 00 seconds ( eight
words more than the Syracuse speci
men ) , and the alignment is perfect , nnd
only once did one letter overlap an
other , and yet the manufacturers of the
machine on which this work was done
uro not advertising it ; for though they
know it cannot bo equalled on any other
machine , they know also thnt it is fur
beyond what can bo accomplished in
actual business and that to encourage
operators to endeavor to attain such
speed would simply result in a mess of
bad work which would bo a credit to no
ono.
ono.Truly , speed contents in either short
hand or typewriting , amongst practical
men and women of , the grand aggrega
