A mooting of the I'dttawattamio Demo cratic association was hold last evening in tbo club bcudquartors on Pearl street. The main attraction of the evening was tbo ad dress of W. H. Iowa Is a goad brain-growing state. That was made evident yesterday to those who attended the closing oxorcUos of the school for the education of the deaf. Tbo graduat ing class numlicrod twelve all boys a strlulng contrast to the class which but n few days before was graduated from the Council Bluffs High school ami wblch numbered twelve girls and only ono boy , In the city schools there Is n scarcity of boy , and In the school for tbo deaf the girls scorn to bo In thn minority , The suggestion that girls nro bound to talk anyway does not seem to account for the startling contrast , for tboro nro many girls among the undergraduate classes of mutes. * 1'rof. Tbo program , rendered In the chapel , was rather n showing of the various stages of progress In tbo school work. The vcrv opening of the educational course wus Illustrated by n bright llttlo qirl , Nettle Mc Laren of Dos Molnc" , who had been in the school but seven or eight week * , and who , on Being shown such articles as n key , watch , load pencil , etc. , wrote the names on the bonrd with wonderful accuracy and quick ness. To realize Iho extent of the worlc to bo done In this school and the rapidity with wblch the nrcsont methods develop the children ono must bear In thought that these children coma to the school with no moro Knowledge of the English language than they have of Hebrew. They do not know that things have names ; in fact , do not know that they have names themselves. I'rof. Wvckolt explained some of these difficulties and showed ho\v they wcro being overcome. In the variety of the pro gram thcro was a llttlo showing of the won derful work bolng done by Miss Hamilton in teaching the deaf how to speak. Ono llttlo girl repeated the Lord's prayer so that it was readily understood by the nudioneo , al though she could not hour n single ono of tbo sounds shn was making. Lllllo Ward , an other llttlo girl , gave a similar style of vocal rocltatlon. Owen Carroll , a deaf boy , re cited , vocally , Lincoln's oration at Gettys burg. In the sign languaeo thcro were some very vivid representations , showing bow _ Ideas could bo given without the use of spoken words. Waldo H. Hothort , a son of the f u- porlntondont , thus gave a graceful , and oven thrilling rocltatlon , n portion of the familiar poem descriptive of 1'aul Hovero's famous ride. Miss Llrzie Fuller , who will graduate next year , gave "Tho American ring" In the sign language so clearly and gracefully that ono could fairly see the patriotic bunting un furled nnd waving. Jodie Ilulns in line manner - nor gave "Tho Psalm of Life. " Some Clover Work. In the pantomimic line some very clever and comical work was done br Wllilo Strong and Lllllo Ward. Rasmus iuou advocated tbo com pulsory education of the doaf. George H. Cummlnes gave a sketch of Chili. John H , Broclchngen treated of the extent and future of American commerce. Elijah A. Kilo gave tbo valedictory address. Besides the literary program thcro were oicaslng exhibits in rooms to the chupol. The examination papers were there placed at bo disposal of these who wanted to Inspect hem. They were eagerly looked over by many , especially teachers In the city schools , , vho were surprised nt tl.o development ibown and greatly Interested in the methods by which thcso results are gained. It was evident thnt many hints could bo hero gained which would prove of value la teaching peakiiig pupils. There wus also an Interesting and credita ble showing of drawings and of wood carv- "nss. The The exhibits of tbo Industrial departments caught the crowd both before and after the entertainment In tbo cbapol. Thcso exhibits will be thrown open to tuo public for three days longer. They show how the boys and girls are not only given book learning , but how they arc being made capable of oarnlng a livelihood. Printing , broommaklng , sboomakiug , dressmaking , painting , em broidery In fact a great variety of practical and line arts are taught Tbo results of this training are interesting and conclusive proofs that Iowa is not merely spending money on this school , but Is mak ing a grand Investment. The school of cookery is a now idea this being tbo ilrst Institute to adopt It. It has been In progress for a few months only , and the result Is so encouraging as to warrant further investment of labor and tlmo In this clonartmcnt , Tboro are many features of tbo institution which rclloct credit upon Superintendent Hothort , bis wife , who is the matron , Prof. Wyclcoff , the principal of the sobool , and his able corps of teachers. Thu sccno ot ho lleht was a * few mile * from this city. The engagement began early on Juno 1 nnd nstod for three days. It was fiercely con tested on both sides. For the llrst two dajs , neither the government troops nor tlio nation alists gained any decided mlvant'iuo. ' At ono tlmo Piilaclo's nrmy scorned or. the point of winning , out encouraged by the jrlos of tholr loaders the rebel soldier * ral lied and recovered tin ground they had lost. All along the line the fighting was tornllo. The murdorousjmachctes played a most prom Incnt part in the chareos and counter- rhargoi. On the third day tbo great enthusiasm of tbo revolutionists began to loll , Desertions weakened the forces ot tlio government and the repeated savage nssaults of the lancers of the rebel nnnv spread terror among 1'alaclo's mon. The revolutionist ponoral saw his opportunity nnd gnvo iho word for n llnnl llerco onslaught on tbo wavering ranks of the enemy. It was Impossible to stay their terrible chnrfjo. Tbo government soldiers made n last feeble attempt nt n rally , then turned nnd fled in all directions. The enemy followed up tbo advantage , cutting down all lop- ganls whom they overtook. The retreat of Palacio's troops continued until this city wns reached. The revolutionists gave up tbo pursuit nt the outskirts of Valencia. There is no doudt that the rout of tno government was complete. The result has dlsuoartoucd Palacio's adherents in this city and greatly strengthened the Crojplsts1 cause. The revolutionists nro determined to follow up tbelr victory and It looks as if another battla would bo fought within a few hours between Valencia and Puerto Caoollo , General Crospo apparently has made up his mind to force the lighting. The troops are massing south of Puerto Cabollo , and a general engagement Hocms Inevitable. Palacio's generals realize I ho danger of tholr situation and that unless they inuko n clos- porato strugslo to drlvo Crespo back Puerto Cabcllo will bo captured , tbo fall of Valencia will follow nnd Caracas will bo practically at the mercy pf the onfcmy. All the government troops in Valencia nnd Puerto Cabollo therefore have been moved into tbo Hold to give tmtlo to the foa. At the.sumotime it is safe to say that the grand jdukq by'jils .action lias suc ceeded in disabusing tUo.Frouch people of ho idea that an amicable understanding be tween Franco and ' 'Ra Kf' is" not HUely to prove permanent. The minister sent word to St. Petersburg some time ago that the czar's visit to Kiel would DO likely to cause much popular un easiness , though of , course it would not disturb oQlclal circles , and suggested that it might bo well to show In some manner that the relations between Franco and Russia would remain unchanged. The liussian chancellor sent In reply a very kind and courteous despatch , In which bo sold that therj was no reason for unoa l- ness and that Franco could always depend upon Russia. M. Hibot was delighted with this dispatch and indeed all the communications which be has re ceived from the Russian government gave him great pleasure , ho wanted some future assurance , however , and managed to maUo his desire known to tbo czar nt Copenhagen. The result was that the czar of his own volition "sont his cousin instructions to pay his respects to President ( Juruot. at Nai.cy. I have also reason to bclievo that the cznr himself sent n dispatch to Prcsldcui Carnet , and tbua ompbusued tbo slgnitlcnnco of Grand Duke Constantino's visit , ilcnco it will bo scon that there is no changn in the relations between Franco and Russia , and that , as I said in my dispatch of yesterday , tbo interview at Kiel Is barren of all political significance. some Important Trlllex. I have also learned from a rollablo source interesting facts in regard to certain inci dents wblch teen place previous to the meet ing at Nancy. The king of Belgium 'And the grand duke of Luxcmborg , it appears , asked the French Government ofllclnlly if it would bo agreeable to President Carnet to bo sa luted by their representatives , the grand duke addliig that It would glvo him groai pleasure to make the president's acquaintance anco in person. Tbo matter was fully discussed at a cabinet counsel at the Elysoo an < l It was derided to say in reply that President Carnet not was extremely llattorcd and was most grateful to tbo king and grand duke for < tbolr attentions , but as his journey would bo en tirely through tbo interior of Franco , ho begg'od leave to decline this proffered cour tesy. tesy.Tho real reason for declining this offer was the fear that the statlhalter of Alsen would express a doslro to extend a greeting In the name of tbo emperor of Germany and in view of Uio patriotic excitement , udomonstra- tlon of this kind might produce uimoylnp.ro- suits. The German government was duly in formed of the whole matter , and tbo result was that it was much displeased , and the of ficious German press wrote articles which for some days kept Europe in a turmoil. The ontlro military forces of the Ulna : amount to about 22,000 only. Tlio amazons number 1,500. They are re cruited nmon the dan htorn of the chiefs , and also mnuiif , ' the young lady captives of his m-.ijosty. Tholr uniform consists of a jacket without sleeves , very short trousers , and u tunic. Tholr caps nro ornamented with n plcco of embroidery representing boino bOiXst or rep tile , the crocodile being the favorite. They are divided Into two battalions under the command of n distinguished lady renowned iu the country for her deeds of dnrlnir and her skill In killing the onnmlos of her sovereign. The nmnzons accompany the king whan ho goes to war , and they light under his orders nlono. Tholr courage is above proof , and tholr ferocity , according to M. Bayol , surpasses anything that can bo imagined. IIo witnessed the human sacrillccs at Abomoy , and hero la his de scription of the exploit of ono of the Amazons : " 1 saw n man brought In on an nlcolto , the bnggago carrying contrivance which the negroes use in transporting tholr calabash or their pots of palm oil. Tlio unfortunate man was bound and gagged , and a black cap covered his face to the nose. Two big negroes carrying this burden halted before the king , who spoke to the mingan ( oxoeut oner ) . The latter then asked the crowd of spectators if It would bo a good thing to sacrifice this mnn In the honor of the memory of the preceding monarch. The crowd responded in the iidlrmativc , whereupon the king declared that ho would send the man to hid 'father. The execu tioner then gave the doomed man al sorts of messages for the defunct king. Then the victim was throv.'n upon the ground. An amazon nbout 20 years old advanced boldly toward him. They wanted to put her to the test for she was a now recruit and had not ns yet killed anybody. With her sharp edged saber , which she hold in both hands , she struck the un fortunate messenger three blows on Iho neek. Then she quietly chopped of the last pieces of llosh that still hold the head to the trunk , after which aho care fully wiped her saber and retired to the ranks. The head was taken into the king's palace and the body tossed into a trench. " If the French should succeed in cap- luring the king of Dahomey it is not im possible that they should send him to Interview his father. Forty-nlno Year * Tor Train llobbory. Deducting the full amount of commutation for good behavior , the sen tence will aggregate twenty-nine years , four months find twontv-thrco days. IIo is 20 years old now , and consequently ho will bo upwards of 55 then. It is understood that Perry , despite the advice of counsel , refused absolutely to plead guilty until ho had been as surcd that about $300 in his possession at the tlmo ho wus arrested and the whole oxtousivo and carefully selected arsenal should remain hia individual property.
