THE OMATIA DAILY MONDAY , MAY 23 , 1902. GREAT ARE THY WORKS , 0 , GOD Inspired Words from the Lips of the Venerable - able Bishop Foster. _ * ELOQUENT IN THE WORK OF THE LORD llratitlfiil Thought * KxprMtftoil In ( Iteming Wonts A. .Miiltlttulo Mstctm tit Him Cnlohrntlou of tlio Tlilr.t Amiltor- iiry of the jp\vortli ; l.ouguo. Foster yostoruny morning In the PI Ml Mottiudist church , was the Rroatost dls- courao yet delivered slnco the conference began. Bishop Poster la considered by many to bo tha greatest living preacher In the Methodist church and the nutubcr who think that way was doubtless Increased by tbo proal sermon of yesterday. The church was filled from pulpit to the doors with all the pcoplo that could llnd room to alt or stand. They went expecting to hear nreal ( sermon and they hcaru It. At the outbot tha bishop's volco was ap parently feeble and many becau to fear that they coulu not hear dim. But as ho pro ceeded his volco ealnod s'.rcnclh , his patriarchal face began to light up with the bplritual fire within , and the sublimity of the tnought and ttiomc , coupled with the clo- qucnco of his language , teemed to lift the nutUcnco Into n state of profound cc.stacy. \Vhoti ho had spoken ono hour and had finished the llrst division of the theme , ho remarked that ho was talking too loni ? . " ( Jo on , go on , " cnino from all over the bouso , nnd ho continued another bnlf hour , growing snore eloquent to the very closo. An In iilrlii | ; Theme. It was a great theme to begin with. " ( Jrcut and marvelous are Thy works , Lord God , almighty , " iirothu words that are found In the llftecnih chapter of Ucvclatlons , and they formeu the kuynoto of the theme. Tha bishop also reaa the latter bulfof the llf- tccnlh chapter of First Corinthians , a chap ter wblrh is worthy of a great deal of study. llu llrst oiiolio of the many ways In which God revealed himself , ana , said that man must enter Into sympathy with Gou in order to know Ills will perfectly. Men tjavo too much tlmo to looking after tha things of this life and not enough to the study of God's will toward them. Then turning to tbo cen tral thouuhl of tba text , the bishop salcl : Oed Is systematic ; Ho Is In no hurry ; Ho lias nil eternity in which to do hU worlc. Some llmo niio God began iho evolution of Himself. 'Jhat Is n much abused word that word evolution. The develop ment of the universe and tbo pro cesses through which tbo earth passed wcro simply the rolling out of God's great plan. A long whllo nco according to our arithmetic , but oniy yesterday in Qod's chronology. Ho began the plan of the uni verse. Wo don't know nil of God's thaught in the beginning , but wo know some of it. \Vo can Judtfo by what wo have scon , and In this way wo can understand a part of God's thouctit. Wo have to study the plan of the earth for a whllo before wo begin to catch u glimpse of God's Intention. Tlicro it enough In the structure and plan of the earth alone to keep 11 n ungcl omulojcd for half a century before discovering the llrst latter of llio alphabet , Immensity ( fdod'n Work. "In tbo great St. I'nul's catbcdral in Lon don tberc is a tablet orjctcd in memory of Sir Chtistophcr Wronn , the great engineer. On that tublct tire these words : "If you would &eo his monument look around. " If you would tee Gotl's works looic urouna. Hero is the earth , 8,000 miles in diameter , 25,000 milus in clreumfercncc. Wo speak of men who have seen Iho whole face of the earth. There never was u man who saw n thousandth nart of the surface . of the earth , and there never will bo. 1'coplo who circumnavigate the globe sco only a strip of the earth's burfuco. It is marvelous , when you think of it , how very llttlo iho wisest men really know as com pared to that which Is to bo known. Wo Ilvo on a small speck , a veiy insignificant island of tbo universe. Wa cull it the solar system , because it is governed by the trroat orb whoso light makes our day and the ab- BCIICO of which brings night. Tnis sun , In the ccntrr of cur solar system , controls niiio planets uml their satellites. TJiut sun is moro than ] , UOOUOO , times larger than the earth , which seisins so largo to.us. Im agine , if you plcaso , the san to bo a bellow ball , with a crust 1,000 miles thick. Tnon fcoro u hole in that crust 8,000 miles in di ameter. Now go out and gnlhor in 1.1)00,000 ) worlds HUe this on which wo Ilvo and drop them Into that holo. Ytu could drop In liOO,000 ! such worlds us this and hardly have the cavity llllecJ. 'IMs is uo day uream ; it is mathematics. Wo have boon enabled by step uftor stop iu science to measure the Izo of the planets as accurately as you would measure your dooryard. " Then the cpoukcr named the planets in order out ward , giving the distances of all of them from Iho sun mid from each otlior. Tbo word painting hero was remarkably line aud it was with some dlfllculty that the audiouco rofiaincd from appluudiag. In VlnnlusH Canopy of sky. \Vhcn the speaker baa reached the edge of tbo solar system , litU.HW.OUO ! ) miles from the sun. ho said : "Now behold the spectacle of tbo nine plunots and their satellites whlrl- Inc about the sun in their subllmo curves , called orbits , each mighty courser coming to tbo pcrio in exact timu to the fraction of an inch. What a marvelous performance that is , but wo have only touched the rim of tlio univorsu Away beyond all thwo wo oo neighboring suns of other sys tems. Tlio courser that brings us tbo Information has traveled at the ruto of 12,000,000 miles per minute , and it has taken Mm li0 ! years to make the trip from one of our nearest nclgnbors to our plaiict. In the heavens wo can see with the naked oy03,000 of tlioso nclghhorlug suns. Then there Is tha llllliy Way that for con- turlos appeared to b3 u sort of fog bank. But wo dually discovered tbc power of the tele- ecopo , by which the human eye could bo as sisted , and turning this holj > cr upon the Milky Way that fog bank bccumongllttorlng array of suns , shining globes , COO.O'JO of thorn , o far away that It rtnulrob 2.10,000 years for a beam of light from tlio nearest of them to rcuch the earth. And still beyond nra other worlds , millions upon millions of miles beyond. Our arithmetic falls to furnish us with a coui'cptiou of the distance. Think of tbo vustncss of this unlvcm1. Lying back of all this thcro is a God who brought it into being , borne pcoplo think thut this Is not preaching tin ? gospel. Hut I think it Is. It is the very best kind of gospel. It teaches us the irnjesty of our creator. Truth U truth , and I hold that iho truth that wo Ond in the rocks and In the firmament Is just as puod as iho truth wo llnd between tlio lids of this book ( laying bin hand on the uiblo. ) Harmon * on tha ItoclfH unit Trt'u * . ' When 1 was n boy I was told that God made the universe In six days , that Ho com pleted nil His croatlvo work In that short pace of tlmo. I accepted It as the truth , but It was a mistake. I discovered with con- ilderablu misgivings that the truth I found In the rocks dlu not nproo with this state ment of creation. I uoumi to study , and atcp by stop 1 was forced to sea that the onrth was not created in so short n tlmo us ix nays , I finally discovered that tun In terpretation of the scrlpturu had uot hern correct. The language ot tha blblo Is in harmony with tha lauguago of the rocks , when correctly read. 'In the beginning God created tho' heavens and thooarth1 ; It does not say how long Unit beginning was. God bad a plan. No Intelligent being begins work without u plan. God picimrcd ibo material out of which ho made ull tliti host of pianola and scattered It ever the terri tory which they were to Occupy , Juat as wo lay down tbo brick and tha lumber before wo ocgui to build u house , so God laid down the brick nnd the mortar of the universe. And bo put his spirit into the brlctc no that the material would do the wont for which It was Intended. Ho tilled the unlvorso with Heeds aud with the germs of llfo , so that In duo llmo the planets bo was going to crotto would bo peopled with living things. " The speaKer then began n description of the way in which tlm planets nra builoved to liuvo been thrown tit bvtho uu. Ho fol lowed the pioccts all the way from the thiowliigoff of Neptuiiu clear down to Iho baby planet , Vulcan , The description oloi&tuU And theu bo followed Ibo subsequent processes until the cartti was rondy for man. God'n ( Irc.itoU Work. "God's greatest worn was the creation of man ( because man could understand moro of God's laws'and will than all other creatures on the earth. Oed was simply building n homo for his children when ho created the earth. Mnn was the son of God , and of course had to bo made in his Imago. Wo can't see Oed , neither can wo see man. t'oo- plotulk noout seeing ouch other , but they only see the tabcrnaclo where the real man dwells. Nobody over saw a man. " "There are two congregations before me , " said the speaker. "Thoro Is n congrocatlon of animals that eat corn and bacon , and they will perish after a few year * nnd return to the dust from which they ramo. Then there U another congregation of spirits. I cannot sco them but I know they nro here , for wo real Izo tholr presence by the presence of the bodies which they Inhabit. You think you have scon mo today , but you huvo not. Thu Is only the house which 1 Inhabit , It is a nmtnlto to say that man has a soul. Man it nsoul. This muddy drapery will eU"op olt nftor awhile and the soul will return to its Maker. " Then the speaker pictured the now born babe in Its mother's nrms thinking Its tlr t tiny thought. "There was an interrogation lolnt , " ho said , "In the litllo one's oyo. Vho am 11 Where am IJ wcro the thoughts that filled the opening intellect. The newborn born soul was laying hold of the first round of a ladder thut reached to Iho throne of the Infinite. " Bishop Foster followed , hastily , the stops of development nnd learning through whloh the mind of n human being might pass nnd finally In beautiful words ho pictured tbo soul's retum to God at the end of its earthly career. There among the angels around the throne of God1 the soul might revel in the fullness of God's love nnd in n complete understanding of Ills great plan ot creation. "It was , " the speaker said , "a glorious plc- turo nnd ono thut should causa every human soul to shout with Joy. No man could long contemplate the greatness of God's works without loving the Creator nnd the Uc- dcomorof man.
