A quoMton fnqaeutly asked is , do invest

faot well Known that a great deal of money
ba > been gained in Omaha through invest-

tnanv ts , have tbe more recent investments

wa "talking lenl estalt" and when a f.locx
Of property changed bands ull the particulars
were made public. At the present Ume when
a piece of real estate is cold the vendor does
not advertise how much ho gained by the
transaction any more than a Jobber Mould
baast of his gain from the sale of a coilalu
bill of merchandise.
As the profits on tbis and tbat piece of roi'
estate are not heralded far and wide , as was
done in former A oars , some people are led
into the error of believing tbat investments
iu Omaha property do not pay as well as
thev did earlier In the city's history. In
other words some are inclined to believe that
Oitiaha property has not advanced much
dunng tbo past fewyrars.
It is no very difficult matter to show tbat
uch i not the case , put tbat really desirable
property has advanced and Is now selling for
Mure than it brought even during the height
of tbe boom. 'Jbo luct is , Omaha's boom
was u boom of activity more than it was a
boom of prices , uud values hero worn never

with the end of the boom propertv stopped

BLOCK.IXG THE CENTRAL ,
Tlir Now Union I'ncltlc Itnllrr shop to HP
I'lHiilcil In the 1'jitli of tlipNt'U llrlilcr
It is reported that the Union Pacific bus
ocatcd its proposed boiler sboa across theme
mo of Cass street in such a position as to
intercept one of the approaches to the pro
posed Nebraska Central bridge
This bailer shop has basn contemplated for
"omotime , but fvo orthroo months neo Gen
eral Manager Clarjt ordorea a suspension of
operations. At that time it was supposed
the improvement had been hungup bsciuse
of the agitation growing oat of the opposi
tion to the railroad's increase in switching
charges. Last Saturday the county
commissioners decided to submit tbe
braska Central bond proposition to the
voters of Douglas canntv , and it bacama
manifest tbat the city oounr.il would take
similar action. On Monday the Union Pa-
cibc took out a bulletins : permit for the con
struction of a boiler shop to cover a space of
bOxi.YJ feet to cost fl-.O . The record in
tbe office of the lnpscnr of buildmcs indi-
rules that the s.trur.ure is to be iocateii on
the northcabt corner of Tenth and Cass
.streets or , more strictly speaking , where
taat corner would be li tbe streets were ex
tended and the map in tbe inspector's office
shows tbat there is room enough on that
corner without encroacbinc on Cass street
The silo for the boiler shop was staued out
yesterday adpinmc tbe round house , but
south of that buudmp instead of west of it
The new * hop will be located squarely across
tbe line of Cass street and consequently
ccross the proposed line of tbe Nebraska
Central. The" plans filed with tbe buildinc
inspector snow that tbe shop will be about
fifty feet high exclusite of anv smokestack ,
acd the friends of the uew bridge loon upon
this action of theUniou Pacific as a move in
tended to obstruct the pioect _
At the oftice of the iretieral manager of the
Cniou PaciQc it is maintained that this new
of the matter is entirely wrong It Is
asserted with emphasis that the boiler
shop has been projected lor a
long ume and that tbe site was selected more
than a 3 ear ago , long before the Nenraka
Central enterprise was broached It is explained -
plained that the construction of the shop wna
temporarily abandoned last winter for want
of an appropriation to tnent the cost. Tnat
allowance , li is slated , was made at a recent
mooting of Ihe officials having aulhonlv , and
the present activity is onlj the elocution of
plans made many months aero At the office
of the superintendent of motive power it is
staled that the work of construction will
bopiu as peen as the weather psrmits iind tie
pushed to a speedy completion.
A prominent builder remarked that ? 12OQ3 ,
will not build much of u boiler house if it is
to cover a space sOxlHU A brick Duilding of
those dimensions , with foundations for
boilers and smoke stack , will cost from
$4UOUJ to foO.ODO So after all the proposed
boiler house is to be nothing but a cheap
sbod with a big smoke stack , planted about
midwav of the linn of the now bridge.

As the r book appears on tbo left band

allowed to attach hoous on the convex Mde of
