r LAST OF THE BUFFALOES 0 , J , Jones' Great Herd of Bison Arrives in Omaha , ALL THAT IS LEFT OF THE MILLIONS An Intercut Ing Trnln of Slock Cnr Unloaded nt IrvliiKton Srrnr * ut tlm St.t- tlim Tlirlr Nrw llomn nt Hal * cjon llrlghti Addition , A sleepy stlllno brooJs over the little vll- lugoof Irvington at all times ana on sun- Bhlny Sundays its dreamy ponce nnd quiet became jolomn in intensity. The usual farm teams nro missing trom the hitching rail In front of "tho store" nnd the half dozen gos- Blps who sit nnlnncod on the bridge whittling sticks and chnwlng straws have on their "other coats" nnd a suitable Sabbath expres sion of countenance. The pipe of the quail In the meadows , now so intensely green , rings out ttartllngly clear nnd sweet nnd the meadow lark nnd brown thrush whistle In concert to the gurgling accompaniment of the Little J'nppio. It is an idyllic Sabbath nnd oven the monotonous ticking of the telegraph In- strumento in the railway station is n dese cration. All this wns rudely Interrupted Sunday when Iluffnlo Jones' great herd of bison was pulled in to the station cooped up in cattle cars over the same ground wboro once their forefathers hnd held supreme sovereignty nnd the thunder of the tread of thnir mighty nrmics hnd made the hills tremble. They had Hist cotnn from Plum Creole on a special train of live cattle cars , and the men nnd ponies who accompanied them looked ns if they had boon tlnough a siege ami they had. The unloading ! wai exciting , but noth ing tothowork of getting thorn into iho cars. Buffalo Jones wns not with the train him self. Ho had had his thumb caught in n rope while routining up tins animals nnd nearly lost It. Ills work was done by Mr. W. 11. Crnry. AVIiat n Hiitriilo I.Kiln Mice. Noailv everyone has seen the American buffalo at least , In pictures , nnd remarked his resemblance to n Texas steer gene to seed. Ho does resemble a steer , but mighty littlo. He al o resembles a can of dvnamilo in action ; a pllo driver when ho strikes the door of n box car ; n imilo in the region of his hind lees , that Is the mule of the obsolete sort which kicked the stars from the sklos. As n whole the buffalo , Judging from the specimens unloaded at Irvlngtou is * a remarkable institution. These nulimils constitute what is known ns the liuffulo Jones' herd of bisonono of Iho very few families of survivors of the noble ntnraaU which once covered the prairies llko sands of the desert mid whoso skeletons by millions have blenched on thu plains. Be sides the hnrd protected by the United States government in the national park there ara perhnp * half n dozen others in different portions tions of the country and sotno individuals in public parks and gardens. Of the wild mil lions there is not now supposed to uo n siuglo one living. In IbbS there were only eighty-five living and those have dis appeared. A peculiar Interest attaches to the melancholy remnants held in captlvity.of which this herd is ono of the finest in ex istence. The majority of those animals Mr. Jones hlmsolf ran down , lassoed and tied with his own hands. For years ho made an annual the uninhabited " " pilgtimncoto "patihandle" of Texas to capture calves out of the small herd remaining ihorc. Kach of tucso expedi tions involved n great outlay of money and nn elaborate outfit of men , wagonshorses and camp equipnee. TLo feats of skill and dar ing accomplished in those expeditions surpass anything over written of or accomplished In the cluiso and capture of wild game. In 1SSS. during the month of May , Ills party not only captured ECvcu calves , but also eleven adult cows of v/hich sotno were lassoed in full career on the prairie , thrown , tied and hobbled. The majority , however , were actually loundod up , herded and hold in contiol until a bunch of tame buffaloes worn driven to meet them , so that It. . would thus he poaslblo to drlvu all together to a ranch. The herd consists of n inacnlficeat group of thoroughbred buffalo bulls and cows uc- sldos n largo number of half bred domestics nnd a half dozen calves. ( iottliiK Tliuiu Oirtlio Cms. The train with its strange load pulled int the station nt Irvincton yesterday nt 5 o'clock in the afternoon and the work of unloading began. Unloading buffaloes is not like unloading cattle , and there are times when this latter oueralion is not devoid of oxcilo incut. The first car contained the "domestics , " which were turned loose and cantered down the shoot and into the pen with a delighted frisk of the tail. Then came the buftnlocows , which had been separated ftom their calves nnd were feellne rather vicious. A heavy plank fencehnd separated the "domestics" Irom these , mid two or throj wiry built herd ers in top boots , furry jackets and wldo briti mcd fell huts tuoH their lives in their hands and ah ax and went in to break down the fonco. Ono blow ol the n < loosened the top board and ono blow of the nearest CON'S lingo head nailed It on again. Hut lha fcuco went down in tlmo und the fun lii'gan , with curious spec tators clinging to every available fence to watch it. Ono of the felt hut gentlemen stole quietly up to the outsldoof the car and , whllo tli-i neniost cow was busy trying to kick windows in the ono behind hor. sncakod n rope 110030 over her horns and backed a way yelling , "lako her nwny. " TUo half a do/eu men on lha othnr und of the rope were braced nnd ready and the cow was swung round to the car door before she knew just what was going on. Hero she grasped ttio situation mid pitched herself down on the lloor with a snort of rage. Her little round eyes glowed llko coals of lire through the thick hair which covered her head and her breath whistled through her nostrils llko steam from nil exhaust pipo. Suddenly she bounded forword and down the Mioot as if shot from u catapult and crushed Into the pate nt the lower end. Thou the rope tight ened nnd gradually whllo iho furious uniuinl boum'ccl like u rubber ball , charging right nnd loft with her massive head , sue ivas drawn to the fence and the rope was cut. Ono by one the whole herd wns brnugnt out In the same way. Some of the bulls are inniHilllccnt animals and two of them known ns'Jumbo" and "Did ; , " would servo for model * for painters. Dick is black with u head llko the end of a box car. Ho has a ring in his nose and ono cannot help wondering ns ho realties the tromoudous power of his masslvo fchoulders and breast how it cvur got there. This is the animal which killou Its Hooper in Oxford sotno tlnw ago. Jumbo Is ( aid to bo the largest buffalo livincr. Ho weighs now , In a state ot wretched llosh , considerably over n ton , and in good trim his wciu'ht must no nearly il.ooj pounds After the buffaloes tbo calves were aenl out. There uro half n cloven of those which , were It not for their handsome wooly coats and crested shoulders , might be taiton for very symmetrical and vigorous domestic ; nnlmnis. Then came the poiiioa without which the handling of the butfuloes would bo nlmoit nn Impossibility. They uro little wiry animals , about a * handsome ns plucked chiciicns , but they know their business nnd can dodge the maddest butfaio that ever charged a horseman. The suit of Pierre l ollx and other half- jrood Indians against Colonel M. T. Patrick and various ether people living In the north ern part of the city was docido.l by the Jnlted States supreme court yesterday In 'avor of Patrick utiil the other occupants of ho lands. Tnoro wns a now nnd novel question In this case which mndn It of great interest , asvell is the fnct that It involved tltlo to property now worth 8l.fiOJ.000. In 1S5I Sophia Felix , n half-breed of the Sautcc-SIouxtribo. living in Minnesota , un der the treaty of Pruirio mi Cblcti , became owner to Indian land script upon which she was entitled to locate aud claim in nil 4bO acres. Some time in lbiJ ( ( sha parted with inrt of this land script and nt the same time ixocuted a quit claim deed nnd a blnnic lower of attorney. In ISlil Colonel M. P. 'utricle oamo into possession of n sufficient amount of this laud scrip to locate 1,0 acres , and also into possession of the power of nt- .orncy nnd the quit claim deod. Colonel . 'ntrick located the scrip on I''O acres of and In the northern part of what is now the city of Omaha , nnd which has since been subdivided into Patrick's addition. Lo'.s In .bat locality have been sold to a largo num ber ot people , who have erected over 1,000 dwellings on the land , besides stores , fac ades and street car barns. The city ma paved the streets and built sewers nnd the water company laid mains nnd connection through it Patrick ntid .ho people totiom ho sold lots invo been occupying the laud for about thirty years. At the tlmo of the location of this land scrip Sophia Felix was a member of nn In dian tribe. She and her husband , however , soon afterwards died , leaving her brothers and sisters as her heirs. In ISM ; the plniutilTs in the suit , a half dozen half-breeds , brought suit in tbo United Stifles court in Omaha to recover all of this iroporty. The case was arsued before [ udges tJrowomnd Dutidy , who decided in 'aver of the occupants of the land. The case was afterwards carried to the United States supreme court nud there argued by Judge Shipman and General Cowln tor tho'liidlans and by Hon. John L. Webster for Putrid : ind the other occupants. It was contended jy tbo attorneys for the Indian plaintiffs that the statute of limitations and the doc- trinolacho'i could not bo applied in this case igainst the Indians because the Indians , during the thirty years , were members of a , ribo nnd subject , to tribal relations , nud were ncrcforn wards of the government and sub- ect to the jurisdiction of congress nnd the .oinmissloncr of Indian affairs ; they , there fore , had no right to bring on and maintain iny suits in the United States courts for the recovery of property These Indians by virtue of an net of con gress accepted allotments of laud nud thus severed tribal relations and became citizens of the United. States for thu first time In SSS. Tuis was a question that hnd never > eon decided by the supreme court of the Jnited States and perhaps never by any court. It was treated ns n new ques ion in the supreme court und argued about thirty days ngo. A telegram received yesterday from the clerk of the supreme court convoyed the in- " 'ormation that the case had baoti "decided in favor of the Patricks and their grantors.
