At about 3W ; ! o'clock yostordoy afternron
tvorknr.cn engaged in cleaning the sewer be
longing to the Union Stoeit Yards company
found the body of a fully developed nnd uoiv-
ly born girl baby. The body was found in
tno largo uiau-holo about two blocits north
east of the bxchanco building.
Undertaker Brewer was notified by Coroner
ner Maul to take charge of the body , which
he did. When ho arrived there the body
was nt the bottom of the sewer , and he was
not long in bringing It to the surface.
Wrnnped around the body was a whlto cloth
of cheap material , and adhering to this was
n niece of u newspaper bearing the date of
April : . ' $ . Nearly tbe whole loft side of the
face was crushuu in , und the loft eye was
completely knocked out. An abraison on the
right side of the chin was also plainly visi
ble. The infant was fully developed , Its
weight was estimated ut nine pounus , and
the child had u head of heavy black hair.
The appearance of the dead child plainly
indicates that It had not been thrown into
the sewer longer than two or three days ago.
The distance from the top of the munbolo
to tlio bottom of tlio sewer is nearly twenty
feet , and if the child was thrown in nltvo
the full would have boon sufficient to cause
dca'.h. Tbo identity of the mother and
murderer is a complete mystery , and ono
which may never bo solved , as not the
faintest of suspicions points to auy ono.
Coroner Muul will hold an inquest at 10
o'clock ttiib forenoon.

whoso iron will and impetuosity has boon Iho

days of Catherine It appeals strongly to the
student of history and the lover of the lopltl-
mate In Mage characterization. Catherine's
amours are somewhat softened by thn treat
ment of tbo play , but still Scrlbo bos , with
uo uncertain tone , held the mirror up to na
ture In this story of Uussla under the Horn-
a n oils as ho has In all his works done for the
Comedio Prnncnlso. The tarijuln has had
his apologists as the concl bur detractors ,
and after resting under centuries of evil
IOIKO it bus boon assorted that the Uorglas
were heroes and virtuous sufferers , not sin
ners. As these criminals exert n fascination
upon certain minds It can bo roadlly under
stood bow Catherine- her womanhood ,
would appeal to the auditor easily swayed by
the rich tones of n voice and the boau'y of a
voluptuous figure.
Mile. Uhoa brings to the role of Catherine
a finished art which Is thoroughly captivat
ing. llor rich voice is heard to advantage In
the strong and tcnsurul situations with 1'otor
and In her scenes with Count Sapiehu , nor
lover , there Is a tenderness that is Irresisti
ble. The slight French accent which Khoii
gives in her English reading is particularly
apropos In this characterization and whether
in her own character or In the dramatic role
of Catherine , who assumes a scepter to
recompense her lover throuch plquo and
jealousy , she is always Hhoa with u personal
charm of manner that of ton makes oiio forget
that she is a great actress us well as a
handsome woman.
