The seventieth an niversary ot the birth of General Ulysses S. Grant occurred today , nnd the occasion was selected for A most appropriate commemora tion the laying of the corner stone ot the Imposing monument which is to mark tbo last resting plnco of the soldier-patriot , ou the bank of the Hudson tn Klvorslde park. The day dawned clear nnd beautiful , with balmy broczos nnd a gonlal sun. Flags were unfurled to the brcozo from the peaks ot tod- oral and municipal buildings , nnd hundreds of prwato house * were decorated with gay bunting , and the national colors mot the oyus nt every turn. The legislature ordained that the solemn ceremonial of lha laying of tha corner stone of the monument to the nation's general should bo recognized PS a stnto nfTatr , and from noon to midnight tbo day should bo a gonpral holi day. It was generally observed us such. Cnthuroil Kurly to Do Him Honor. A general concourse centered In Riverside park , the scone of this afternoon's ' coromo- ulos , and in the earliest hours of the day pcoplo began to set out to pre-empt places of \ antago at this Mecca of the patrlotto'cltlzons. A grand stand bad boon completed to scat 12,000 pcoplo. It was built upon and around tbo concrete foundations ot the mausoleum , at the northern end of which rests the colllii containing the body of Gcnoral Grant. The platform was 200 foot long and 150 foot wide , with a small elevated stand for the distinguished speakers at thn southern side. Below on the ground were built tbo rough benches for the Grand Army voterar.s , U.OOO of whom were arranged for. On the southeast - east corner of the irregular shaped grand stand platform wore seats assigned to the Legion of Honor , while seats for the presi dential party nnd distinguished guests were placed in tno center of the platform , facing the speaker's ' rostrum and to the east ol the corner Atone. The corner stone is at the southwest corner of the mausoleum and this morning it hung in mid air , suspended from n powerful dor- rick. It Is 0x0x8 foot , of solid grauito and weighs moro than ton tons. At 8:80 : this morning the monitor Mtnanto- uotnnb , which had steamed uu the river from tbo navy yard , dropped -anchor In the Hud son opposite the tomb nnd Commander S. E. Gart sent a body of sailors ashore ladca with bunting nnd signal flags , and thcso were fastened over the unsightly derrick and the stars and stripes were displayed from ovorv available point. When President Harrison appeared at the ladies' entrance of the hotel on the Twenty- third street side the crowd choorod. The president lifted his hat and stonpod into the big barouche drawn by four horses , that was waiting for him. With the president were General Horace Porter and Lieutenant Parker. In the second carriage sat Vice President Morton and F. D. Tappon ; in tne third. Secretary Elklns and General Butter- fleld ; in the fourth , Postmaster General Wanamakor anil John H. Starln , and In the llftu , Sociotary Noble and H. W. Cannon. Other carriages which followed contained becrotary Rusk , Cornelius Bliss and Chauncny M. Dopew. The cavalrymen then wheeled into column nnd with four platoons preceding and three following , the chief executive und his party took up the march. The ceremonies were sot to begin at 2 o'clock. Long before that hour , however , the 12,000 grand stand seats wore hlled and the greensward adjoining was swarming with a pushing crowd of spectators , The Loyal Legion nnd men of the Grand army were the Hrst to arrive. The former occupied scats on tnetr private stand nt the right of the main grand Bland ; the latter oc cupied ground scuts facing tno grand stand. The speakers' space was fenced off with rod , white and blue bunting and was surmounted by a parasol canopy lined with the national colors. The United States band from David's Island was stationed lust beneath tno Loyal Legion stand , uud during tha wait for the president rendered patriotic airs. By 2 o'clock tbo crowd had swelled to 40,000. The arrival of the old veteran , Gen eral Franz Sigol , about this tlmo was the xignal for an outburst ot cheers by his Grand Army of the Republic comrades. Among the distinguished guests on the platform were Generals Schollold , Howard , iJodpo and Slocum , the only men now living who commanded army corps during the late war. President Harrison and party arrived at 2:15. The crowd cheered as General Horace Porter escorted President Harrison to the speakers' stand. ( iulicrul 1'orter'n itomnrks. After the David's Island band hud ployed "Hull to the Chief" and an invocation by Kov. Dr. John Hall , Gonciul Porter , presi dent of the Grant Monument association , made an address. He said the laying of the ' cornerstone was In celebration o'f an event which would bo forever memorable in history the anniversary of the birth of tha illustrious soldier and citizen whoso ashes would repose within the structure. The fund required for the completion of the tomb wailarco , hut the commlttoo hiving the project in obargo was confident that the re quired sum would soon bo raised. Two hun dred and fifteen committees were at work raising the funds. They were enlisted for the war , and they proposed to "tight it out on this line if it takes all summer. " There had already boon ralsoa f-O.i.SUO and the work would go on until every Ilrm and Indi vidual had nn opportunity to subscribe.
