TALKED OF THE 3 SET INDUSTRY
Sugar King Clans Sprecklcs Spends n Few
HoiirH In Omaha.
Mr. Glaus Sprecklcs , the millionaire beet
sugar manufacturer of California , spent sev
eral houra In Omaha yesterday. Ho and his
family arrived from the cast nt nn early hour
on their special palace car , "Wildwood , "
which stood on the side truck at the union
depot until 2:10 : , when the Journey toward
the Golden Gate was continued.
The party consisted of Mr. Glaus KprecUles
nnd his wife , their son , A. 13. Sprccklcf , nud
Miss Sprcckles. Mr. Spreckles , the senior ,
is a stout , level-headed Uerman.past the half-
hundred mile post , but to all appearances as
vigorous ns the average man of10. . TUB BEU
reporter was cordially received by the vet
eran sugar king , who lay upon a divan in bis
magnificent palace car reading the morninc
paper.
"I Inland to establish a second beet sugar
plant near San Francisco , " said Mr. Spreclc-
Ics , "and have a good deal of the machinery
there now. My llrst riant has n capacity of
0,000 tons of beets a day and cost mo S50J.OOO.
I ( five premiums for tuo b > st boots In order
to encourage tbo farmers to raise us good a
crop as possible. For the best beets I pay as
hiirti ns$7 n ton. "
\Vlth reference to the difficulty of getting
farmers intcioucd in sugar bcot cul
ture Mr. Sprecklcs said : "Voi , I
hnvo had considerable difllculty in
getting farmers to engage in beet culture ,
but I think that with the Introduction of
improved machinery farmers will bo lucllued
to ionu with more favor upon boct farm Inc.
I have n machine for plowing out the beets
and I shall have another machine by next
fall that will cut off the tops and tnlls rapidly
nnd I think satisfactorily. If farmers would
fully consider the great bcncilt thnt beet
raising is to the soil they would see tha' .
beet farming is destined to become the
salvation or the agricultural districts
of this great west. By a system
of rotation the soil will produce
moro grain in ten years by planting It three
years during that time to UCCUR than to
plant It the whole ten years to irniln. Tbo
farmer Is Just throe bcot crops ahead and
has better groin by sucU a process. "
"It thojprcseut bounty on beat sugar paid
by the government sutlsfootory to you * "
"Yes , I nm very wnll satisfied with the
arrangement. One thing Is certain , wo must
have either a bounty or n tariff , I think it
would bo n wise policy to glvo the sugar
beet farmer some encouragement , also , by
way of a bounty until tha busi
ness of boct farming in thoroughly
establlihed in this country. "
Mr. Sprocklos thought that , boct culture in
Nebraska should bo a success because ho bo-
lloved thnt labor could be had hero ut a lower
rate than ID California. Ho was surprised
to Una the percentage of sugar or saccharine
timtter In Nebraska grown beets so high.
