A rather ridiculous story has boon going
tbo rounds concerning an incident In the
routine life of Mr. J. W. Broatch , the Ne
braska appointee from this district at West
Point. A local paper In publishing the item
managed as usual to got Its statements con-
plotolv entangled and thus to do Mr. Broatch
a great Injustice. The grain of truth unon
which the mass of fiction was built Is this ;
The mllltry cede requires cadets who outer
West Point to submit to an almost endless
persecution by the higher classmen until the
oattallon leaves camp. Ono of the upper
classmen attempted to protract his sport
after tbo allotted time but found that bis
Insulting orders were resented by Cadet
Broatch. Ho thereupon challenged Broutch
to light , n'prlvlloRO which the latter hostbrred
to accord him. The encounter took place ;
both combatants adjourned for a sojourn In
the hospital , although by reason of disadvantages -
vantages m weight and slzo tbo contest re
sulted slightly to the advantage of the
nirgroisor. Tno upper classman was confined
for a wook. Cadet Broatch nftor a nlno
days' siege bos again boon enabled to rosutno
