Jnn.J The state encampment ot the Grand
Army of the Kepttullo nnd of the Womnus'
Holtof Corps tukos place in this city on Hi o
I'lh , 18th nnd 10th of February , to which
every Grand Army post and U'omnns' Kollof
Corps is expected to send delegates. This
event will also a.11 together a largo number
01' the Sons of Veterans , nnd the crewel will
bo , swelled by n largo number of comrades
who nro not delegate * , but who coma ns
visitors.
Stale Comtnnndor Toolor wns In the city
till other day nnd ho Informed Tun Dec cor-
respondent that If the weather is nnyMhero
near fnvornblo thi ) people of Columbus could
look for the largest attotulanco nt this on
campniont of any over held lu the state. Ho
notices that more Interest Is botnn tnlton In
the mooting thnn hns hcrotoforo been
apparent | , nnd thinks that the central
,
location and accessibility of this city are
favorable towards Inducing a largo nttond-
atiuo.
Arrangements nro being made by linker
post , No. 1) ) , Grand Army of the Hcpubllo of
this city to provide quarters for the delegates
and to nmko the ntTiiir pass olT smoothly.
The post has secured the opera house ) for tlio
encampment meetings , nud the Meridian
hotel hns bcun selected us Grand Army of
the Republic headquarters for the visiting
veterans. Post commander S. L. McCoy
looks for umvnrtls of 800 delegates , besides
nnII indollnlto number of visiting comrades
and , Sons of Veterans ,
The sVomon's Relief Corns is making active
preparations for the reception of delegates ,
nnd will provide homos for them free 6f
chnrgo vvhllo they remain in the city. Mrs ,
C.rol .1. McCoy , president of the Columbus
relief corps , Informs Tin : Bin : that much
Interest Is bolnir manifested In the encamp *
mdnt by the corn1 ; throughout the state. She
hit ! received inquiries from about nighty
corps winch uro going to send from two to
thrci < delegates each. As there are n mini-
DOI of corps to hear from yet , It is reasonable
toWi estimate the number of delegates to the
Women's Hollof Corps oneampmqnt at from
aoo ! ) to 500. The corps has secured Oohlrleh's
hall for meetings of the encampment nud the
Meridian hotel will bo known as corps nond-
qunrtors.
qur Mayor Henry Uagatz hns decided to tender
tin freedom of the city to the visitors , and
the people here have a warm plnco in their
hearts for the boys who were tbo blue nud
will endeavor to make their visit pleasant
nnd lu every way creditable to the city.
A matter of considerable importance to the
old soldiers will bo brought up , it Is under
stood , nnd it Is that of considering the advis
ability of relocating the placii for holding the
reunion. Grand Island has tiad three con
secutive meetings of the reunion there , nnd
thcro was some iilnd of an understanding be
tween that city and the Grand Army people
three years ago that the reunions would bo
held ' tuoro for Ilvo consecutive years. No
ono can tell whether or not the location for
holding ! tbo reunions will bo changed or not ,
but these who ought to know say the ques
tion will bo considered.
Commander S. L. McCoy has received in
structions from tbo stutu department com
mander to" appoint guards and nn ofllccr of
the day. The guards were appointed at the
me of the post here tonight. It is tlio
understanding between Department Com
mander Teeter and Post Commander McCoy
tnat the former will bring an ofticor of the
dan wltli himfrom Lincoln.
The meetings of the encampment will bo
open to visiting comrades , ladies of the
Holief corps and Sons of Veterans , and the
gallery ! in the opera bouso , which Is commo
dious , will bo at their disposal.
The program fur tbo encampment cannot
be given except in n general WQJ- . The ilrst
day ; will bo devoted to organization and tbo
appointment ] of the necessary committees.
The second day will consider matters per
taining to the legislative affairs of the en
campment , . , and the third and last day will bo
used for tbo election and installment of ofll-
cers for the ensuing.voar. As there nro a
largo number of candidates for the oflico of
department commander , nnd us they are
most all bard workers and men of ability , it
'H expected tlmt the last day will bo full of
excitement and interest.
CXI'J Sons of Veterans do not hold their encampment -
campmont until next Juno , when it takes
plnco at David City , Thoao who como berate
toCo ttio Grand Army nnd Woman's liolloi
Corps oticampmet will do so simply to see
how It is done und to absorb nny information
err amusement that they may detect
The new guns , to the number of twelve ,
received by tlio Columbus post nro very lino.
They will boused by the guards during tbo
encampment , and tbo now swords , Ilvo in
number , nro things of beauty. They will bo
worn by ofllcors of tbo encampment.

HOW TO TELL A STOIIY ,
i\ll : Ciiu lii llsi'il , lint It Should lie e'on
Irnsti-il ultli ( iiinl.
It seems to us that in good fiction ovll
must appear as a foil for good ; that it
must bo sot over against righteousness
so as to make black bind ; indeed and
white purely while , says a. writer in the
Chautauquan.
The story toiler need have no express
moral hobby to ride post haste ; his lalo
will bo all the better if told with the
wire love of story lulling ; but wo may
bo quite sure that his tttato is unsound
if ho chooses u salacious story to tell
and gives it the unction of personal re
hearsal. Hero , indeed , is whore we
would draw the lino. Kvll can bo usoel
by the artist with clean hands ami to
wholesome olTcct by contrasting it
with n healthy , solid projection
of good. The chief trouble with
current realism is that it does not.tla
this , but chooses to sot hopeless evil and
nerveless commonplace Hide by side
without any triumphant moral heroism
to dominate or neulrali/e it.
The ethics of fiction shines in tlio
character , the moral nature e > f the story ,
more than in the osluiisihlo or oven the
actual , moral purpose of the author. It
is the gdnorni olTocl that the work is
lijvoly to produce when read -by the
aggregate of readers which must bo a
largo clement of the lest.

Some interesting observations relat

quoled the case of the snipe , which he
had often observed engaged in repairing

The mosl interesting example was
