Tun Ilnr-l It looks as though \vo should
have a choppy market for n tlmo. A
Chilian war scare in the early parj
lr I " of the week served m an cxeuso for rnldmif
I'V ' the list , and the fact that the raid was
not wholly unsuccessful showed that
the maikcl was roauy for
Homo reaction. Otherwise such A .scare
would have been laughed nt. Wars
Mid rumors of war are the staple
material upon which the Kuropean
markets nro worked , and our market is
also \vorkod considerably on wars from time
to time , but they nro domestic feuds that Is
to say , freight rate wars. International
hostilities as speculative material are n nov
elty to Wall street. The whole business
means that after such n long rlso and some
reaction folio wing the market Is llablo , within
certain limits , to sec-saw until It fjels ready
ser another decided movement. If thn'
movement bo not upward then the ablest of
operators nnd financiers nro nil nt fault.
( Such a con'.Htlrm of the tnnrkot ns now exists
is a torting-oul tlmo.
Kosulls ol the Wnr Icnrr.
) Stocks of properties which nro adversely
l nffcrtcd by unfavorable conditions ns the
depressed 'state of the south or of the
I'ncillc coast are working lower because
of decicaslng earnings , whllo the moru
fortunately situated properties held steady ,
or iccovor casllv if temporarily sold
down. They lead the i allies of the
market as the others hud to decline. The
idea that things will bo choppy for a whllo ,
while tbo earnings of the principal
loads are temporarily cut down by
tl'o winter weather is suggested by
the course of the market the last week. It
milled easily from the warchargoof Mondav ,
I when war was declared against Chill in the
inorninp nnd ticaco proclaimed In the after
noon , but , when later a rapid movement
wus worked ut > in Lacluiwivnn , ap
parcntly as moans to strengthen the
market. The general list failed to respond
and certain prominent stocks fell off , show
ing that the advantage was being taken of
the Lacknwnnno Hurry to sell on and again
jVesterday after the bank statement appeared
With the surplus reserve risen to the im-
ineiiso figure of fiia.OOU.OOO.
Itnjern Were Scarce.
The traders found buyers only at conces
sions for the stocks they sold to rcallza
profits. These nre pretty good indications
that the recent strong buying power which
scut prices up day after day is no longer
oxcrted except to steady the market when
raided. With the enormous accumulations
of money it is wholly unlikely that there
will bo much decline on the average , while
the market is shaping Itself for tlio next
farorod movement.
Another paragraph in the letter Is worth
'
iinoting : "Tho'boord believes that it is the
uuty of the directors ta assist so far us they
can , not only the development of the intrinsic
values represented by the shares , but also to
assist the pormamcnt values of the stock if
possible , and should the earnings of iho com
pany Justify n division of its profits among the
stockholders in the future , the directors
will tiresent to the stockholders a
proposal for classirication of the stoclc
into preferred and common for the purposes
of such division , civing to nvcry stockholder
n portion ot his holdings in preferred stock
which shall nt once bo a safe investment , nnd
leaving him still the majority of his holding
in common stock which shall carry control of
the property. "
National Cordage stock h ° s boon strong at
nil times througn the week , oven when the
market was most Inclined to sell off , and the
jwcfnrre stock continues its advance ,
whlcii is said to bo still many points
below the loTOl it will reach. Chicago Gas
has been steady vith nuupward ; tendency.
The forthcoming report It Is said will show
figures which will bo a pleasant surprise
to .storkholdors. It Is understood It will
cover operations of the company since its
formation nnd show the marvelous growth
which the city of Chicago has made in that
tlmo. The Chicago boar clique who used to
raid this stock are as fearful of it now as of
tlio hot end of a poker. They seem to have
gene over to the distillers trust , upon which
they have been operating in many ways , now
thoroughly fumillarto Wall street. It appears
to bo conceded that the recent bear move
ment against it was engineered by the prin
cipal directors of the corporation. There Is
no reason why nn outsider should not sen for
the fall as well as DUV for the nso in any
stock , but when the officers of a company
occupying n position of trust to its stock
holders engage m bear operations against Its
securities , the case is different. Out in the
west , however , they seem to think
it right and tlio distillers' trust has recently
boon put through the regular Chicago mill.
The stock was broken down about 10 nor
cent. The word has since been passed that
the Insiders have about received their hold
ings ogam.

The Kaiser Barar company of this city is
undergoing liquidation. The main cause of
the failure of tlio institution , which was sim
ilar to Whitcloy's in Louden and tbo Bon
Murclio in Paris , is that Berlin is not a
suitable place for such an establish
ment. The Dcutseher Xandelstag has de
cided in favor of the holding of nn interna

port of /.ehandclunt' shows decreased
profits for IS'Jl , and is regarded as proof of a
general depression in business.
