with the deep sincerity of His words nut !
nets. Hovnn BOOH by n reporter * of the
St. Lou it Globo-Doiuoer.it , to whom Iio
told his story in a. vary modest mannur.
It is substantially as follows : For a num
ber of years prior to 1889 ho was a con
ductor on the Now York Central road
nnd lost his position in the strike of thai
year. Ho 1ms over since boon anxious
to icturn to railroad work , and on Tues
day night , December SI , loft St. Louis
611 the "Cannon Ball" train over the St.
Louis. lion Mountain & Southern rail
road for San Antonio , Tox. , intending to
go via the St. Louis , Iron Mountain &
Southern , Texas fe Pacific and Interna
tional & Great Northern roads. Ho JIAI !
been employed by Chief Train Dis
patcher Littloliold , of the San Antonio
Ar Aiansas Pass road , through an om-
plovmcnt agency in St. Louis , along
with forty-live others , to go to San An
tonio and take the places of the strikers
thoro. Mr. Palmer uvois that the htato
of affairs existing on the Aransas Pass
road was misrepresented to him or ho
would never have accepted the conduct-
orship which was ollored him.
THi : ATTACK AT MTTLI * KOCK.
The train loft the Union depot in this
citj and moved swiftly on its southwest
ern . cout'bo without any adventure
worth } of note until Little Rnclr , Ark. ,
\\asroacbed. At that point a party of
men who wore in sympathy with the
strikers attacked the train , having boon
ad\iscd beforehand of the comingof the
the St. Louis party who had been em
ployed to take the places of the strikers.
The entire party , with the exception of
Mr. Palmer and a young mini named
Miller , wcio in the coach in front of the
.slcopor. and tins was cut loose from the
train and literally wrecked. The occu
pants for the mo-it part lied for their
lives , but a few who wore armed made n
desperate light , and succeeded in hold
ing out against the mob till the train
pulled out. Mr. Palmer nnd his friend
Miller wore in the chair car. and not
being recogni/cd wore not molested
Had the assailants not forgotten to cut
tno bell-rope the train would have
pulled out and left the ear and its occu
pants to the mercy of the mob , but as it
was the Ham was backed and the car
coupled on once mot o. Of the forty-five
men who started from this city only
twenty-seven got past Little Hock. The
rioters cut their baggage to pieces or
throw It oil the train , and they wore
left to make the remainder of the tijp
without even u change of clothing.
"From Little Rock on there was one
continuous fubilade upon the train , and
tno iKirtj in tno car was in danger 01
being k'llled at every station. * 'At
To.xarkana , " said Mr. Palmer , "I was
standing on the rear platform of the
