There cnu bo nn doubt of the fact that
( food music Induces almost as man ) ' people to
attend church as iood preaching. The choir
probably draws a'creator number of non-

Omaha Is coming ; well toward the
front In the line of church
musio. Every year brines n few moro pipe
organs of the most approved pattern , and
lends a few more excellent volros to the
ranks of the choral baud. Church choirs
have lonn boon employed us synonyms for
chnuKoablcncss nnU d'issen.slons. In tbo
former of these characteristics , some of the
choirs of Omaha would probably bo entitled
to n lending prize in a competition for insta
bility , but there hns been of recent yours
very llttlo acrimonious dissensions in any
of the choirs of this city. There is nt pros-
cut moro peed voices in the cliolrs of Omaha
than in the past , and iu the main , they are
united to better ndvnutnpo than over before.
The following urlof.sketches of thrco prom
inent choirs of this city will prove to bo in-
torestiiiK reading , especially for those who
are musically Inclined ;
Trinity Cathedral Cliolr.
The choir of Trinity cathedral Is the
largest In the city , or in fact , west of Chi
cago. Itlscomposodofnsurpllcodchoiror men
mid boys , with thirty-flvo voices , ladies'
chorus of twenty voices , nnd solo quartette.
Few choirs are better equipped than Trinity
for the proper rendition ot the music of the
church , Under its present talented director ,
Mrs. Cotton , the choir lm < < made n reputation
that extends far beyond the confines of Ne
braska , both cast and west. It is always
active , and wliilo other choirs are restiuc or
taking vacations , this choir Is hard nt work.
This is evidenced by the results produced at
Its musical services. Konoarsnls are hold on
Thursday mid Saturday evening.- ! for the full
choir , and Monday nnd Friday nfternoons for
the boys nlono. ( jantat is nnd oratorio. } have
been given at different times , nnd always
with great success. Among thdm might bo
mentioned Stnlnor's "Daughter of .Tairus. "
Gaul's -'Holy City , " "Tho Messiah , " "Croa-
tion" and others. The salary list approxi
mates nearly $ U,500 , yearly , ofvbich the
quartette and organist receive about $ ,500.
The musical services on special occasions
attract immense congregations , It being
impossible to gnlu admission without going
long before the services commence.
The quartette is composed of singers who
are among our best known soloists. Mrs.
Cotton is the soprano , Airs. Mueller , who Is
ono of iho most popular singers in the city ,
ulto ; Mr. Wilkins , tenor , is prominently con
nected with the Apollo club , being chairman
of the musio committee and n momnor of the
board of directors , nnd is ono who has had
llftcon j'oars experience iu choir work ns
sOloist ; Jules Lombard , bass , Is Known from
the Atlantic to the i'acllie not only for his
magnificent voice , but for his many line
qualities ns n man ; i\Ir. Butler , the organist ,
is a conscientious and hard worker , nnd ren
ders very ofllciont service. Tlio great success
of this choir is due to its ou'ergotic nud en
thusiastic director. A woman of great
nervous force , she accomplishes great re
sults not only In her choir work , but with
her teaching as well. Sbo possesses to an
eminent degree the rare faculty of Imparting
to nnd inspiring others with her own feelings
and enthusiasm.
St. I'hlluinona'H CalhctirnI Choir.
The choir at St. Philomonn's Catholic ca
thedral is composed of a chorus of twenty
voices on regular salary. This number is in
creased to thirty upon special occasions.
Miss Fannlo Arnold , the director and so
prano , Mrs. Joseph Hitter , ulto , Lieutenant
Kiiuio , tenor and Dr. K. D. Arnold , baiitono ,
compose the quartette. Miss Arnold is ono
of the most Kticcnssfiil teachers of music Iu
the city having charge of the music lu thu
public tchools and possesses rare ability ns a
choir leader. Mrs. Hitter is n favorite as u
n contralto singer nnd Lieutenant
Klnzlo is ono of the Jiucst tenor
singers In the west. Dr. Arnold Is a con
scientious and effective br.ritone.
'I ho masses usually rouaored by this choir
are worus composed by the prcat masters ,
such as IScuthnven , Mozart , Haydn , Koslni
nnd others. The choir cnn glvo any of the
following masses : Mozart's Twelfth , Hny-
dvn's Imperial lu I ) , Mo read an to In It , Far
rier's , Mozart's Sovuntti , Clmorosa's Military
in H , Wohl's St. Cecelia In ! - > , Cowcone's In
J-1. Schmidt's in C , I'otor's lu D und Bee
thoven's in C ,
Twice each ycnr Christmas and Easier
the Si. Philomona cholrls assisted by Boyd's
opera house orchestra , anj oncn each year ,
In May , the choir Is also assisted in an even
ing of snsred music given for the benefit of
the choir fund. These snored concerts
are so popular that the church
Is always crowded to the doors and hundreds
nru turned away , A special feature , nnd n
treat for connoisseurs of music , was the
rendition of ' "Laudato 1'uorl "
Cnpocl's , ar
ranged for orchestra by Mr. Lee II. Knlls-
bury. This unlquo piece of church music was
given for tbo Ilrst tlmo In America by the
St. I'hilomenu chclr last Easter. The tenor
obligate , ono of the most exacting solos ever
written for a tenor TO bus to , was sung by
Lieutenant ICIuzio , supported by n chorus of
thirty ladles' voicos.
WcHlniliiHtur Church Choir.
The quartette choir of the Westminster
Presbyterian churoh at Tw'txity-miith nnd
Mason streets , has boon hut recently organ
ized , but the members of that choir are well
known Hiugors of decided ability. The West
minster church has reason to feel thoroughly
satisfied with tint work of the cholc.
Miss Manila Oliver of Council Bluffs is
the soprano. Thn ladv possesses n voice of
remarkable sweetness nnd of grout promise.
Iu quality nnd power her voice is ono of the
best lu thu city. She i.i quite young and her
voice will Improve for many years
yet. Much may reasonably bo
qxpoctod of Miss Oliver's volco
a'nd In nil probability she will become Ono of
the most popular churoh and concert singers
of Omaha ,
A great many complimentary things might
bo truthfully said about the singing of Miss
Frances Koodor , the contralto of this choir.
Her volco Is ouo of exceptional Hmoothiios *
and resonance in the lower tonoj. Mis ,
Uoodor llllcd a position for some tlmo at the
Kountzo Memorial Lutheran church , where
hur excellent work proved to bo quito a feature -
turo of the church worship.
Mr. Robert Weir Is thu tenor at present
and the bass Is taUon by Mr. W. A. Uorrlek.
who nl. o loads the choir. Mr. Derrick Is a
very pleasing and effective singer and has
uecomo quite a favorite with the public us a
concert singer. Mr. Derrick mm Miss Uooder
are botb students nt the Torreas school of
music ,
Mrs. VVarien SwiUler , a prominent mem
ber of the church , Is the organist mid her
work Is'vory crodltnblo.
