In two respects , tit least , tlio Trmlo
Review occupies n position unique in
journalism , First In regard to our manner -
nor of making investigations nnd the
disinterested charnctor of. reports based
upon such investigations. Our examina
tions Into mutters of current Importance
are conducted without bins , unit nil edi
torial opinions bused upon such data are
without prejudice , no charge in any man
ner , shape or form being inado when
a favorable opinion is given , and no mo
tives of prudence deterring when tlio cir
cumstances of the ease demand nn adverse -
verso criticism. Neither hope of reward
nor fear of consequence are factors in
shaping the editorial uUoriincta of this
journal. Whilst the indopciulence mani
fested has frequently anlagonl/.od those
accustomed to seeing the powerful influ
ence the almighty dollar exerts in the
business olllco , it has also served to
place us prominently in the confidence
of " 0,000 readers every week of the year.
The fact that expressions of opinion are
not based on llnancinl considerations ,
that wo have neither frionda to reward
nor enemies to punish , no axe to gMnd ,
and that no payment of money figures
directly or indirectly in tholran.-mutions ,
and that no gifts are accepted , gives such
editorials weight which never attaches
to paid write-ups or the expression of
journals which seel ; to conciliate large
advertisers at the expense of frankness
and truth and thus deceive tlio reader
who seeks unttvrnislied truth alone. In
another respect the Trade Review is
entitled to more than moro mention , as
never has it , or any of the other old
established journals with which it is
now incorporated , editorially endorsed
any proprietary medicines , and with but
a single exception whore duty led to the
endorsement of a prominent orthopedic
institute have wo over mentioned phy
sician , Infirmary or sanitarium in torn'is
of endorsement.
It will bo noticed that the glaring and
speciously worded advertisements of
Warner , Pierce , Hood , Ayers and
others are never found oven in our dis
play columns. During a &coro of years
of high grade journalism and catering
to the best commercial interests , wo
have ever excluded from our publica
tions all which could not fully demon
strate its ellieioncy , reliability and hon
est worth.
Today wo now depart from such in
variable inflexible and iron-clad
, - cus
tom , and in so doing wo have no apolo
gies to offer , for the same adherence to
principles which caused the exclusion of
other medical advertisements from our
pages now compels us to throw open our
editorial columns to bestow unqualified
approval and unstinted commendation
on a secret remedy to endorse a med
ical institution Iiuly and freely and to
recommend both in the most emphatic
and unmistakable way possible. Wo re
fer to the
thoCOOK
COOK HEMKDY COMPANY
of Omaha , Nob. , an establishment which
for some days piist has boon the subject
of rigid examination by a , trained and
trusted correspondent upon-tho ground
it representative of this paper
despatched to Omalm for the solo pur
pose of acquainting himself with the
truth , the whole truth and nothing but
the truth concerning this much talked
of , much advertised and much vaunted
treatment and its results. Like the
Kooloy Cure , Coolc Remedy is now occu
pying a prominent place in the discus
sions of the day ; and each in its line is a
specific , a blessing lo those who bullor
worse than death. The two will revo
lutionise the science of medi
cine and almost regenerate the world.
Time and again has the writer boon
called upon to investigate as sweeping
claims as those made by the ( Jcok Remedy -
edy Co. , and made , too , as boldly as this
company now makes its claims in the
public press.
As in all previous investigations the
result was the same an unfavorable re
port the only honest course after all the
facts.woro ihado known the investiga
tion in this ease was inaugurated with
preconceived opinions that. In the end
the Cook Remedy Co. would tnko its
place upon the roll of the "weighed and
found wanting. " There was no reason to
believe that this would prove
nil exception to all other
cases. Closest inquiry among
competent financial authorities served
to interest the investigator for the irre
sponsibility of the claimants had always
before boon the llrst unfavorable fea
ture to present itself. A call was next
made at the olllcos of the company at
Thirteenth and Farnain streets , where
moro ol the unfavorable conclusions
which had boon hastily and , wo will
add , unjustly formed , wore quickly dis
sipated , Hero was found a regular ,
com potent medical practitioner whoso
entire time is occupied with the cases
placed in the hands of the Cook Remedy
company. Hero , too , was found an nii-
omoly , a business malinger who did not
hem and haw , who , Instead of interpos
ing obstacles to the correspondent's
search , seemed to court Investigation.
NQ hesitation , no halting and stammering -
ing when leading questions wore bluntly
and unremittingly nut to him for
answer , no attempt at bluster or bin IT
as experienced in the past , and none
of that craven manner which eharac-
terlf.es the impostor when a newspaper
exposure stares him in the face. Tins
gentleman , on the ether hand , faced the
music calmly , with a composure born of
honest purpose , and which honorable
dealing alone can trlvo , which thiMO en
gaged in dishonorable tranbtictlons seek ,
but seek in vain to assume. Instead of
attempting to cover up a doslro to open
up fully and freely was manifested. In
vestigation was courted , not shunned.
Actual photographs of poor victims of
syphilis , with all its ghastly , grisly horrors
rors , wore produced , Hanked by pictures
of the same after thorough cure , backed
by testimony which would bo gooti and
sulllclont evidence in any court in the
land. Personal letters from every HOC-
tlon of the country were cheerfully ex
hibited , and the keenest investigation
was met in ouch way as to at once in
spire confidence ,
Following such examination , a call
was made upon the proprietor of this
wonderful remedy at his place of busi
ness , for at present this gentleman deus
not devote his oiitirn personal attention
to the institution under investigation.
The only reason that the Cook Remedy
Co. Is located in Omaha , and not in ono
of the largest cities of the country , is
the fact that its proprietor is the con
trolling spirit of tills other establishment -
ment , which is rocogni/.ed as the leader
In its Hue throughout the great west.
Hero was found the man who is to the
syphilis curbed what Koeloy is to the
whiskey cursed , n benefactor In all that
the name implies. Tliu norsonul repu
tation of this gentleman is untarnished ;
his social standing the highest. His
financial standing wna given as "prob-
ivblv half n million , " nt one financial es
tablishment whore inquiry was imido ,
and "unlimited almost" at another bank
whore the correspondent sought Information
mation of this nature.
Conservatively , and In a conservative
manner must this report be made ; three
hundred thousand dollars is a reason *
able figure at which to rate the business
and financial backing of the Cook Rem
edy Co. Such high llnnncinl standing ,
conllrmed by Dun and Hriulstrcet , give
weight to the unconditional guaranty
of refunding money where a cure Is not
made , whilst the fact that during the
past live years but one request for ro-
turii of money was made , is indicative
of the elTcctlvoness and thoroughness of
the cure effected. Letter after letter
was read by the correspondent I'onllrm-
ing Iho claims of this company that
the cure Is entire and pnrnmnont ,
many testifying to such porma-
noncv years after the disease
had been eliminated. Thu pens
of those were cursed but are now
cured , seemed as if dipped in lire , no
eloquent and pathetic were the hoart-
fell expressions of gratitude and thank
fulness for deliverance from the bonds
of degradinir disease , joyously relating
how they had been elevated from loath
some fllthinoss to purity , manhood ,
health , cleanliness and happiness.
No claims nuido by this company are
ono half so strongly put , so emphatic ,
so broad and sweeping regarding the
"
wonderful cures , as are the" expressions
contained in thu mass of correspondence
the grateful have spontaneously
showered down upon this olllco. Would
that every victim of indiscretion who
reads these lines could have sat slue In
side with the correspondent as the per
sonal testimonials were read ; to Imvo
done so would have buon to feel that utter
feeling of despair , of awful gloom and
dread which the unfortunate victim of
syphilis ever experiences , give way to
Ifopo , a hope that once again manhood
might reassert itself , and the blessed
boon of a sane mind in a Bound body ,
health , good cheer and happiness take
the place of that ever pervading house
of woo unutterable , which now makes
life a hell.
The Cook Remedy Co. does all it
promises ; it claims no more than it ac
complishes. Wo know whereof wo
speak when wo boldly assort that a
specific , all infallible never-falling
cure for syphilis in all its varied anil
horrid forms has been found and is now
in the hands of this company , exerting
power none but the syphilis-tainted
can ever fully appreciate. "Without
sentiment the crucial lest has boon
made , and the elllcacv of the system
of the Cook Remedy Co. as fully demon
strated as a problem in mathematics.
Never since llarvoy discovered the
circulation of the blood has there
been evolved n principle of greater in
terest , of moro absorbing importance , or
ono more fraught with beneficent re
sult. It is the duty of every honest
conscientious newspaper lo boldly pro
claim to the world and to the inhabit
ants thereof , the wonderful , liny , the
mi meal ous cures daily olToctcd by this
institution. However , instead of doing
so , a ridiculous and wicked prudery , ex
cusable in a maiden lady of uncertain
ago , but is unpardonable in nineteenth
century journalism , serves to exclude all
monlion of this worthy institution. Just
why the name or mention of a disease is
worse than to permit such disease to
exist , than to point out a remedy when
a cure is at hand , is a subject for the
moralist and metaphysician. Much llncly
spun philosophy and queer logic have
no place in the management of thin
journal.
Wo know , the reader knows , the
world knows. Unit this cursed disease
syphilis is widespread , that It exists In
every workshop , in every mart of trade
and in every studio. It drags its slimy
and venomous length in our courts , our
camps , our schools. The ormincd judge ,
the eminent jurist , the distinguished
physician nwiikb in the stilly vmlches of
the night to ctirso the tormentor. The
Innocent and the beautiful are not ex
empt from its poisonous breath. The
padded walls of the insane ward re
strain its victims and every almshouse
has within its confines those who have
mot the dread enemy and have boon
'
mortally wounded in'the battle of life ,
scarred , twisted , deformed sulTerors ,
who pray for death to end their woe.
Then why not cry aloud from the house
tops:1 : Why not the press and pulpit
take up the cry ? Preach a now gospel ,
purity in place of loathsomeness , clear
eye , steady brain and iron nerve , in
stead of creeping , crawling , rotting car
casses.
Around about us nro the nerveless ,
cringing , horrible travesties upon hu
manity , the crippled , the maimed , the
loathsome , who , acquainted with the
truth , mitrlit go down into the pool and
come UD cleansed.
Are wo not , then , derelict in our duty
when prudery and foolish squoumish-
nuss make us silent ? -No wonder Charles
Lamb asked deliverance from 'a
"cursed , sickening , canting , unmuscu-
line ago. "
In the name of humanity , of love , of" " *
follow felling , In the name of all wo
hold pure and right , lot UH toil of those
things. To us the duty Is manifest.
The Cook Remedy Co. olTors the only
release from the galling Rhiioklefl of
syphilis. There is no question regard
ing the cfllcloncy of the treatment or
the permanency of the cure. Upon
those statements wo rest the reputation
of this journal , which we have taken
twenty years to build up ; upon those
assertions wo are willing to risk the
conlldonco of every reader and sub
scriber.
Wo cordially and heartily endorse the
Cook Remedy Co. , and unreservedly
recommend it to every sulToror. livery
transaction with it will thoroughly
justify such endorsement , and make
good the strongest recommendation.
There is but OHO specific , ono effectual
euro for syphilis , that alone used by tlio
Cook Remedy Co. Other HO-callod
cures , whatever their pretensions , are
"as moonlight unto sunlight , or as
water unto wine. "
