STOCKS AXlt liOXUS.
NEW YOHK , Soot. 21. The stook market
opened the now week this morning with
another burst of activity which bid fair for
some tlmo to eclipse tlio record of last Friday ,
but the trading In the afternoon foil away
materially and whllo the sales of the day were
extraordinarily heavy they were within the
sum of the day. The feature of the dealings
today , however , w. s the unusually largo
number of stocks dealt In , together with the
unusually oven distribution of the business.
The upward movement also made steady
progro&s and this , notwithstanding the con
tinued efforts of the options who have been
left out In the cold In the present rlso , to foreo
a reaction by which tlmy may either roeuper-
nto short contracts at something like n nom
inal loss , or to enable them to got In on the
next advances at figures likely to net ttiom a
profit within a reasonable tlmo.
There was likewise continued heavy realiza
tions of profits accrued by bulls who are satis
fied with the advance as It is , and also by the
foreigners , who were rendered uneasy by the
continued withdrawals of gold for o.vaort to
tills port from the Hank of England , with tlio
constant tendency of money ut that center to
bccomo dearer. The demand , however , which
was almost entirely from outsldo sources ,
completely swamped the forces working for n
reaction , and for ouco the uubllo is In Wall
street with power to do as It pleases , and the
manipulators are In a bcnso "nowlie.ro in the
strife. " The opening was at figures fraction
ally higher itlian those of Saturday and
further Improvement was madu right from the
start uud as the Chicago pcoplo were heavy
sellers , on the r'so the western stocks were
almost all sluggish , wlillo most of the special-
tics were still very strong and amomr the uet-
lvo stocks the Vlllards led the ndvanco with
some of their old vim. The YnndorblltRwo.ro
also conspicuous for their strength and Lake
Shore was ouo of the stocks which succeeded
lu scoring a material Until gain.
AtchliQii , Reading. St. Paul and other Into
unusually prominent stocks for activity were
still loaders in the dealings but thu totals of
their transactions did not foot up to as
high figures as of 1-ito , while the busi
ness done was moro than usual among
the low prlced shares. The upward move
ment , with frequent halts and much excite
ment , made steady progress until the last
hour , when the realizations became moro nu
merous and became sulllclont to overbalance
the demand , heavy as It still remained.
Prices I heroforo receded fractionally , but sev
eral stoeks. Including Hurlliigton and Rook
Island , were thereby brought below the
level of their opening figures. The market
finally closed active and steady after the
decline- and halted. The list Is almost
invariably fractionally higher , but North
American Is up 1 ? per cent ; Northern Paclllo

the same view ; I'lrst , the conservatives , who
think that present prices are well up to the

tlio oxpedlunoy of forcing up values to n point
at whlolt the investment demand would bo
chocked and at which foreign holders , under
thu pressure of an American drain of gold ,
might toll out upon New York ; and a second
end class uro those who have un
loaded largo lines of "Ions" stoolc and
aru actuated by thu purely Bpeoulntlvo
purpose of being able to buy In again at a
lower range of prices The former of these
tw classes Is Dimply (1u lescent ! the latter

Indirectly , to depfilji prlcei. I'or the rest tlio

facts. When there Is a largo otttsldo
Intcrot In the markt't which In the case nt
present this clnif\f ) operators prove an tin-
portant clement , , fiit- they all act In the sumo
direction no lon nVthoy arc nblo to maintain
their margins , niulili Is therefore tllnicult to
break tlio force of tliclr support. At prc.ipnt
the forces of tlin market itro divided Into
these unuualineil.UullRou the ono Bldo and
the iiunllllcil bull1) and the profosslonal boari
on the other. TUo. result of such a contest
under present cu'tidltlons ' cannot lie much
other than a BUCOOOJOII of slight lluotuntlons ,
with llttlo gain for ulthur the ono party or the
oilier. In judgliiRi\liat may bo tlio outcome
of this contest it Is Important not
lo lose sight of thu fact that
the extreme hulls have in view a prospect
which , If realized , will menu a moro active and
more prosperous condition of business and cn-
torprlso than exists at present. Wo are In
thomldstof a progressive Improvement , and
each day brings some now stimulus to tlio
buoyancy of tlio prevailing boom , Within thu
past week , for InUancc , wo have had n gov
ernment crop report of unexpectedly high
averages of the condition of the Uulmrvostod
cereals , largo Increases In the earnings of the
railroads , the beginnings of Imports of gold
from the continent of Europe , and a hank
statement favorable to ease In money ; and In
the meantime there uro no unfavorable olr-
cumstunccs appearing , wlillo tlio innrKot was
wholly uunircctcd by thoMltyleno Incident.
In this sense. It may lie said tfi'it much of tlio
bulling comes from the course of events , and
In any case It cannot bo denied that such a
favoring drift of occurrences strongly rein
forces tno sanguine bull party while it In
duce * caution on tno other sfdo of the market.
The tendency might bo less Important If
there wore the caution usual at this season of
the year about thu course of the money mar
ket ; but the rullitx of geld from Europe hav
ing already sot In , the money prospects are
an element of encouragement , rather than
discouragement. Perhaps the sole factor that
can ho regarded as seriously suggestive of
distrust Is the grave condition of European
politics arising from Russia's coercion of
Turkey In relation to the passage of thu Dar
danelles. That may provo to bo a very grave
ninsllou for the great powers , but to the
United States It could only bring Important ad
vantages In an Increased demand forour In
vestments and , In the oventot war , for our
food products. Nor U the negotiation of Rus
sia's loan In I'arls calculated to appreciably'
allcct American Investments In Europe , as
the loan will have to bo taken almost exclu
sively by French citizens , who hold but few of
our securities. With so many elements In
favor of the Now York market nnd so few , or
vlrtua'ly ' none , against It , It must bo admit
ted that the prospect of making any adverse
Impression on current prices is not very en
couraging to the bears and tlioso who may ho
temporarily working In line with thorn , nnd It
would not bo surprising should these who
are waiting fora downward turn In prices
have to wait until some further ndvanco
has been made. Hut It Is doubtful whether at
the moment this probability Is clear enough
to warrant buying. A noteworthy feature of
the market Is Its broadening character , stocks
which have been long neglcetod now spring
ing Into activity. In part this Is duo to the
development of the speculative spirit , and In
part to the Improved financial condition of

porting largo gains in earnings , and this explains -
plains the rise In the Vnndorbilts and con
necting properties , which has been ono of tlio
hoalthlest features of the market. The move
ment In Atchlson also had Its foundation In
Increased earnings. In Heading , the sudden
activity was duo to disbanding of the pool ,
which looked up some -lOD.tiOJ shares and so
discouraged all speculative dealings. An advance -
vance In coal , and the approach of a moro
active domund for the article , also stlironed
the coal properties. Several of the specialties ,
such as Chesapeake & Ohio. Ontario & West
ern and Kansas & Texas , are growing more
active , all of which Indicates a broader and
active market during the fall months.
ClllCAOO. III. . Sept. 18. Keunott , Hopkins .t
Co. to S. A. McWhortcr : Strong cables and
wet weather abroad , with u sensational bull
ish article from apromlncnt journal , produced
nn active demand , for shorts , the opening
being nearly 2o above Saturday's close , The
market Is so sonsltifo that great weight is
given to every thine ; jf a bullish nature , even
to such as , on c.oso examination , would bo
found without " " material foundation.
I'or example , /tlio article alluded
to which was sent broadcast over
the country by the Associated press
states that the outstanding shortage In Rus
sia's viold of rye eirectually obliterates all
possibility of Riissla exporting any of her
scant wheat ciopIt would bo Impossible to
make a statement more positive or put It In
stronger language , and yet there Is not a word
of truth in It. Russia has boon exporting
wheat every week , of the now crop year and
since stho prohibited the exportation of rye
the wheat export'shavo been Increased. The
entire nrtlcln Is intissuaof misrepresentation
ev.dently prepared . .In the interest of
the farmers' alliance and Intended to
8Upplemcnttho"hold baekyour whoat" circu
lars of that organization. Undoubtedly there
Is a largo European deficiency of breadstuff's.
Insuring good prices for American grain , but
Unit is no reason why the press should bo used
to circulate lullammatory reports calculated
to deceive the public and cause a lletltlous
advance In prices. Manipulation of this kind
will almost certainly defeat tlio end In view ,
though temporarily successful. Tlio visible
simply shows an Increase of 2C3a,0'JO against a
ilecrou.se a year ago , and shipments the pint
week to Europe from all parts of
the world reach the largo amount of It'.feO',000
bu. , showing another considerable Increase In
the amount on ocean pabsage. Receipts at all
primary markets continue liberal. Stocks of
wheat ut principal markets In this country
are now qultn largo and If they Increase as
fast as they indicate they promise to bccomo
burdensome. Clearances were only moderate.
At times the pressure to soil September nnd
October corn was very pronounced , and the
lowest prices for tno week were made.
There was u considerable reaction near the
close on covering by shorts. Tlio long futures
of corn Una favor with investors but It Is be
lieved they will ultimately sell homcwhut
lower after the present demand subsides. A
good export business was dona In corn today
at the seaboard. Oats have shown llttlo
animation. In provisions the consumption of
product is satisfactory to holders as Is also
cstlmato of the Department of A grlculturo
that tlio supply of fattening hogs In the coun
try In September was 3,31.0iOO ( less than a year
ago. Tlio market Is quiet but firm.
CIHCAOO. III. , Sept. 21. Schwartz , Dnpoo &
MoCormlok to P. 0. Swartz & Co. : wheat
opened strong and higher on higher foreign
markets and cold , wet weather in tno United
Kingdom. This brought great buying orders
at the opening and caused nn advance of
about 2i over Saturday's close. The quota
tions In Liverpool were Hid higher and there
was also a lower quotation of consols. The
Incronso In the visible supuly was 2SOOMO ( bu.
The receipts hero were 012 cars , and In Minne
apolis and DuluUi were 1,078 oars. The char
ters today were 4C,000 ! ) bu. Corn was very
weak during the first hour , but Ilimlly rallied
on the largo charters of 00,000 bu. Provisions
were extremely dull , transactions being mostly
changing.
