THE OMAHA DAILY BEE , SATURDAY , SEPTEMBER 10 , 1891. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Hews from Now York Houses Pat tbo Price of Wheat Up. HAND OF THE CLIQUE AGAIN NOTICED. Knntcrn Dcnlcrs Ilcllcvcil to Ilnvc Itocn IcRioiuillile | fortlio Itcccnt UncnHiiiL'SH In tlic CcrcnlH. CniCAOO , III , , Sept. 18. The securing of the Immense wheat crops without damage has bccomo ( insured and since the scnro ever the farmers'alliance "Hold your wheat" cir cular died out , this market Inis had to look to the cast for news calculated to alfoet prices and New Vork , an the Intropotfor about nil of the foreign Intelligence , has naturiilly been the point from which nearly all of this class of news Imscomc. Houses with forolKii con nections In Now York say traders hurolmvo not been slow to take advantage of the fact ntul have managed to secure early advices of happenings In Europe calculated to affect prices , and holding this Intelligence until they have placed their orders with tholr commission met ) In Chicago , have been In a secure position before the news bccnmo known to the trade lu general. Asldofrom this It Is charged by local traders hero that there are moro than grounds for the suspicion that the news was Invented or doctored for the Chicago cage market In the Interest of outsldo speculator later * . In evidence they point to the numer ous war scares and jtho llko.whlch have turned out to be of little or no consequence , nnd the very contradictory market reports iccelvud. Fnincllmcs Liverpool would he quoted lower to the privatu wire houses whcn'.tho uubllc cable to Die board quoted It higher , and vlco versa. Whether these charges are true or not. the market has for f-omo tlmo been kept In a nervous state , and dcater.s have been moro In fluenced by the.clmructor of tlio current ru mors whether houses with Now Voru connec tions wore buying or Belling , thnn by the con ditions legitimately affecting vnlili > s. The icsult of It all bis ; been that Now Vork lias had the best of It in tbo violent lluctua- tloiiB which have characterised the market , nnd have succeeded In guaglng the movement of prices with much accuracy , selling at tbo top aiurbnylng at tbo bottom , and making about all of the money made on the turn , ex cept that made by St. Louis dealers , who have followed the lead of New Vork pretty closely and have realized hamisomo re sults. The accuracy with which the Nnw Vork speculators guagu the Influence of news on this market was well Illustrated today. The early cables were bullish and were accompanied with buying orders , and ns a result the shorts got .scared nnd tried to cover , but finding no wheat for sale they began to bid for It , putting up prices Bharply. Initially , after they Iiul : put the prlco high enough to glvti thu early purchasers handsome profits , the Now Yorkers began soilIng - Ing and rounded up a good dny's business at prices about where they left oil last night and In good shape for another bull campaign to morrow morning if conditions nro favorable. Wheat ruled strong almost from the start and sold up half a cent anil had the advan- tlitre with a good deal ( if stubbornness. There WIIH sensational news In tbo market but cable advices reported a very strong feeling In the United kingdom , though the private advices from thn continent Indicated some weakness hero. Now Vork seemed to take the load In strength and had good buying orders on the lloor most of the session , foreigners were said to be picking up wheat thnto very liberally and the houses hero with foreign , connections were generally good buyers. The demand , tbo strong undertone and tbo bull dispatches made shorts very nervous. Kvery attempt to cover a line put prices up Instantly. The rumor that Kusalii , had prohibited the exportation of wheat , which was circulated yesterday afternoon , was denied this mornIng - Ing , l.utor a private cable from St. I'etors- burg said that a general prohibition was Im probable , though the export of 1'erslan wheat Had been forbidden , filter in tno day a tele gram from Now Vork said that Russia had prohibited the exportation of "I'orslan wheat , " which Issiilu to be a grade of Russian wheat embracing about ono-thlrd of the crop. December opened at from USJic to UUc , ag'alnst Oajto at the close yesterday , sold off to liSUc , reacted then after a cabon of ( inlet , forged to tl.OOU , broke to ttlUo soon after the noon hour on sales for Now \ ork account ; later there wan a reaction and It closed at lWi c , 1/uto cables to tbo Hoard of Trade quoted 1'arls lOo to 13c higher and Eorlln excited and 5m to 6-Jm ! higher. Corn opened considerably lower on accoun- of tbo continued line weather In the north west , but the strength displayed by wheat caused tbo market to assume a strong tone. October opened at O''c , touched CITio , ad vanced to Xlir ? , broke to52ic ! and closed at 62 ? c against 5-'Kc yesterday. September was weaker , losing IUc. Oats were steadv to firm with fluctuations of a quarter of a coht. Hog products ruled strong and higher on a. good demand , and the firmness in grain during the forenoon , but weakened with them In the afternoon , The leading futures ranged as follows : A11T1CI.ER. The stock market ted ay was the most active of any day for years , not excepting the days of the November uantu , and there wns a great deal of excitement at tending the trading at all times during the day. There was u continuation of the buying for the long account by outsldo speculators , both foreign and domestic , and the covering of largo lines of short contracts liclcod along the upward movement whllo they swelled the volume of business to unusual proportions. Another element In the day's operations , however - over , was the enormous realizations on the profits secured during the last few days , and those operations during the forenoon were the most Influential factor lu making the temper of the market. Ilio opening was made at higher price's than those of lust evening , but whllo Reading was up Rovon-etghts of 1 per cent. Loulsvlllo ft Nashville was down five-eights of 1 per cenU Heading was still the center of speculation In the forenoon , hut the crowd of brokers In the spaces allotted to the dltfer- ont stocks were unusually largo and whllo Heading and Atchlson still maintained the premier position In point of activity , other stockssoon came to the front with moro sub stantial advances. The heavy buying and the heavy realizations of the forenoon kout the market In an extremely feverish state , the transactions footing up to enor mous figures for the flrst hour , the excitement bolng correspondingly Intense. Toward noon , however , the realizations slacked away under the stubborn resistance of the market to the pressure and the shorts cumo In to cover. In the buying movement the granuors were most conspicuous and Hock Island , Hurllngton and St. I'uul took the place of Heading and Atchl- BOII as loaders of tno market , Thu advance In those shares was very sharp , and as compared with tholr lowest figures Hock Island rose 4 ! percent , Hurllngton 2Ji per cent nnd St , I'aul KU per cent , while among the specialties there were equally pronounced movements. Texas & Mexican Central. Milwaukee , I.ako Shore and Western and thu In dustrials being very prominent. The lowest figures were reached toward 2 p. m. and after that tlmo the traders who had started In to take tho. market away from shorts began to realize their profits and a ma terial reaction occurred In the last hour , Reek Island going back 5)5 ) per cent and the rest of the list from iino-olghth of 1 per cent to IK per cent. Some of the moro blugglsh shares of the forenoon were even carried down below the level of the opening prices , and Ontario & Western lost a good Hlleo of Us late rlt > o , dropping from uaji to 2j. } The decline lusted until the tumid of thu guvel and the market closed rather heavy nt the concessions , thonch a great majority of the list are fractionally higher this ovenlng. content with u rUe of only seven-eighths of 1 per cent. The weakness at the close was the result of nn effort to get out by local traders who had bought on the ad vance. Cables were conlllcting but generally stronger. Minneapolis nnd Dultith had HI cars.
