The aspect of affairs abroad which was disturbed by the Mltylono afTntr wcro looking bolter this morning , and London , which yesterday was n seller of all kinds of securities , Lccamo a buyer today and to that extent Improved the fooling hero with the temper of the stock market. The feeling In the street was of u moro piononunccd bull ish character than for some time , opening prices this morning wcro all from one-eighth of 1 per cent to llvo-olghths of 1 per cent bet tor In the active stocks than they closed last ovcnlng. The bears and those who have been working for a reaction , In order to pick up cheap stocks , made a final assuilt upon values In the early trading which has of Into brought them some success and Union 1'aclflo was kicked down seven-eighths of 1 per cent , but the rest of the list lost only about their opening gains. Ou the other hand Distillers continued Its advance and other specialties showed a tendency to rlso In the face of the general depression which lasted only u short time. The now buying was very apparent and pur chases for the long account became moro numerous as the morning were away , which started the shorts In to cover before prices had got very far away from thorn. The result was that an upward movement began which lasted with but few and unimportant Interrup tions throughout the day. There was a mod erate setback toward 2 p. m. but the Interrup tion was of short duration and the upward march was qulokly resumed and the highest prices of the day were gener ally reached In the last half hour. The dec laration of a dividend of one-half of 1 per cent on Hock Island caused the selling out ot the holdings of a few disappointed speculat ors but whllo the stock fluctuated ovcra range of 1 ? percent. Its final rally was over 1 per cent from Its lowest figures. The market fln- nllv closed active and strong at the highest prices of the day and with a confident feeling that the upward movement has only begun again.
