The oigns of war the past month in

arrayed against the military and civic
power of the state , recalls the days of
' 01 , when members of the same family
arrayed themselves , bade each ether
good bye and took different paths to
serve the cause they thought to bo tlio
true ono. Often these partings wore
not-peaceful ones , and tlio separation
sometimes followed bloodshed. As tlio
war grow olderconfederate , recruiting
parties paid frequent visits to the val
leys of the Cumberland peaks , and many
a strong unionist was forced to enlist
under the bars and ptripos of rebellion.
These conscripts wore not good soldiers
for the southern cause , and invariably
escaped at the first favorable opportun
ity.It
It often happened that a conscript deserter -
sorter , knowing it was perilous for him
to visit his homcyiimdo his way as di
rectly as possible to Nashville , within
the union lines , enlisted and donned the
suit of blue in the army of Undo Sam.
So it happened that when Colonel
Straight of Indiana nitido his famous
raid into Georgia in the spring of 1804 ,
in an abortive attempt to destroy the
arsenal at Homo and draw away Bracer's
cavalry from the front of Rosoncrans ,
then at Tullahoma , ho had in his com
mand as guides and scouts some fifty
East Tennesseoans , picked from regi
ments at Nashville for this special duty.
These mountaineers proved invaluable
to the command in piloting it through
the passes and dollies of the rugged
country in which Straight's roughriders -
riders operated. They know all the
short cuts , the fords and good stands for
battle when the column wjis pursued and
attacked , as it was almost daily from the
start of the expedition by the rebel
cavalry.
On May 4 Strcight and his little band
of raiders stacked their guns and sur
rendered to the superior force of General
Forrest , the famous confederate cavalry
leader. 4lnonff those surrendered wore
tlio hardy scouts and guides. Of their
number was a Tonnossoean from Wal-
dron's Ridge , in the locality where these
mining troubles now exist , named Albert
Wintormuth. Wintormtith was a dar
ing follow and had done excellent serv
ice on the raid both as guide and on the
skirmish line in the daily bouts with
Forest's men before the capture. Ho
and the writer , who was a member of an
Ohio regiment in Straight's command ,
hud fraternized in the parly days of the
disastrous expedition and before the day
of capitulation , hud become sworn
friends.
After the surrender , the federal sol
diers were taken to Rome and corraled
on the bank of the Coosn river , near the
little city , surrounded by a heavy guard.
Wintormuth was noticeably nervous.
Ho seemed to lese nil his reckless bearing -
ing after his carbine had loft his hands.
The reason for this sudden change eamo
out later.
On the first morning after our bivouac
on the shore of the Coosa a file of con
federate soldiers marched by the guard
into the camp. The prisoners , 1.300 in
number , wore ranged in single file
on the four elacs of the inclos-
uro. The olllcor , the captain of n
regimental company , who headed the
squad of the newcomers , then passed
along the linos. With him were two
women. They scorned to bo of the ordi
nary typo of hOtithcrn women ono mot
in tiioso days in the little farm houses in
tlio mountain felons of Tennessee or
tlio Carolinas. The older ono was per
haps -15 , while the younger , though sal
low-faced , waifr , , rather comely and

tormuth , but as his face took on a dcopor
pallor , I felt the tremor in his arm
cease. His muscles scorned to bo almoat
rigid.
"Stop out here , " said the olllcor.

martialed and shot for desertion and
serving with the enemy , " was the entry
on the roster aftoa his name.
His story was learned after the war.

Tennessee from which Wintormuth had
como and from relatives the facts were
gleaned. His family were staunch
unionists. The father and three bens
had enlisted in a Kentucky union regi
ment. Albert being the youngest re
mained at homo. Ho was paying court tea
a young girl in the Scquatchio valley ,
whoso family ( the Egglors ) were all ar
dent supporters of the confederacy.
The engagement was broken off by the
ill-feeling engendered by war. winter-
muth was conscripted into a Georgia
regiment , deserted und joined a Ton-
nobseo battalion in Rosecrans' army.
The families became bitter onomios.
The Egglcrs , driven out of their homo
by the ciiango in the shifting tide of
war , had gone to Georgia , and mother
and daughter were visiting a brother
and son stationed with his regiment at
Rome wlien Stroiglit's men rode through
the streets ns prisoners. They saw and
recognized Wintcrmuth. Their story
was soon reported to the provost mar
tial , and , willingly or unwillingly , tlio
woman who had once promised to bo the
bravo young mountaineer's wife , pro
nounced the words which caused his ex
ecution as a traitor.
