Nr.w YORKSopt. . 8. A representative of
( ho Sun sought Mr. .lay Uould yesterday nt
Irvlnpton , and found that gentleman In the
host of health and spirits and disposed to
tnlu , and talk most Interestingly , on various
subjects that are at tin moment of paramount
concern. Mr. Qould readily responded to n
request for an account of his observations In
the west and the new conditions that wcro
Drought to hit notice.
"t loft Now York , " said Mr. Gould , "about
Moron weeks ago , fooling a llttlo worn and
tlrod , desirous of trying the effect of the
drier and more bracing nlr of the west nnd at
the anino tlmo of killing two birds with ono
atone , and seeing something of tbo Union
Pacific , which I had not boon ever for eight
years. Neither had I ever boon through
Idaho and Montana. Ilenca I anticipated
the enjoyment not only of that relaxation ot
which I was somewhat in need , but a moro
particular and personal familiarization , so to
Bpoak , with that portion of the country in
which my moro Important interests , and es
pecially those of tlio Union I'acillc , contorod.
As to the effects of the keener air and the
blether altitudes ot the west on my physical
condition , you can Judge for yourself.
"I npont nearly all the time in Idaho , Utah
nnd Colorado , of course taking in Nebraska ,
Kansas and MUsourl on routo. I had abun
dant opportunity for a very comprehensive
view of the situation in what Is certainly by
no mo ins the loust Important section of Uio
country.
"I found the Union Pacific In a very satis
factory physical condition , nnd was told on
all ildos that since Mr. Clark had taicon
charge the most marked improvements had
boon evinced in the management of the
property.
NebrnRkn'rt Suporh Crop.
"Tho crops In Nebraska the flrst state I
reached are simply mipcrb. The harvesting
of the wheat crop was already Mulshed before
I loft the west , The early corn crop u be
yond the roach of frost , and on my way
homo through southern Kansas I found a
largo portlou of It cut In that section of the
country. In tno stales of Kansas nnd Nebraska -
braska the wheat crop U tno largest over
crown. What the exact yield will provo lo
be , of course I cannot predict , but 1 talked
with the station , freight agents and others
all along the route and their expressions of
opinion as to an unprecedented crop wcro
unanimous.
Grand KcHiiltn of Irrigation.
"Boforo reaching Idaho I supposed that the
geographical characteristics of that state
would not be dissimilar from those of Wyo
ming , with which I am familiar , and whoso
grout eonoral elevation of 7,000 foot above
the sea level renders It moro or less , doilclont
in water for irrigation purposes. To my sur
prise , however , I found n comparatively low
altitude , with Mnplo water for farming nnd
agricultural needs , and n romarkublo growth
in the development ot fruit culture. In this
respect. Indeed , this mate Is hardly second to
that of Utah , whloh I llrst visited some six
teen years ago , nnd found lo bo little clso
than a vast area of sago brush. Now it has
become very fertile and highly developed ag
riculturally , owing to tno admirable facilities
lor Irrigation. The result is romarKnblo
crops , in many cases two a year ; and in thnio
of alfalfa , a spacios of grass or nay on which
lioraos and cattle seem to thrive almost ns
well as on hay nnd oats , as many as four
crops a year a'ro ralsod.
Wealth of Mmurnln.
"I visited the mines of the Union Pacific
branches in Idaho and Montana. In Idaho
the mining Industry is still in Its infancy , but
It has , nevertheless , great prospects. Many
of the 'leads' that carry lead , silver and gold ,
nro true llssuro veins and rich In minerals.
Butto. in Montana , which Is the northern
terminus of the Union Pacific road , shows
remarkable activity nil Its mines being In
operation with the oxcuptlon of iho Anacon
da , which , it seems , Ihrough some arrange-
tnont with a French syndicate , has been tem
porarily shut downin order to give consump
tion a chance to catoh up with overproduc
tion.
"Passing on to Utan , 1 visited Salt Lake ,
the mines and other points of Interest. I
found since the eight years I had last boon
there that Utah had ni.ido great strides. Salt
Lake Is rapidly becoming a great city.
A. Ijnml or Varied Wonders.
"I came east ovar Iho now lines of the
Denver & Rio Cirand fiom Salt Lake to I'u
oblo , taking full advantage of iho wonderful
baths and tuning and iho gorgeous scenery
Passing on Ihrough Colorado 1 took Ibo Mis-
ouri Pacific to St. Louis , stopping at var
ious points m Colorado , Kansas and Mis
souri.vboro wheat was being loaded nnd
corn out and tno whole country teeming with
unwonted industrial and agricultural activ
ity. At Uutchlnson , Kun. , wheiol made u
short stay , ono of the moat remarkable deposits
posits of salt In the world has boon dis
covered , They are nlrondy down UOU feet In
the vein and have not found ttio bottom. The
nit business is growing rapidly and prom
ises to bo a gro.it industry In Kansas. East
ward from Pueblo I noticed thai n great Ir
rigating canal had been constructed along
the line of the railroad for bovenly-llvo miles
the water being taken from the Arkansai
river and thus dlstrlbutnd ever hundreds of
thousands of acres of land. At this point 1
root ono farmer alone who was galling roiuly
to plant ! l,000 ncros in potatoes , for which ,
owing to tholr line quality and flavor , n great
demand already exists in the oast. Then I
passed ever * the Missouri Pucltla through
JilUtonrl , visiting Fort Scott and some ot
our extensive coal mines in Missouri und'
Kansas. This practically finished my trip.
-1 thus not only saw tbo country thoroughly ,
but was bonetltlod wonderfully In health.

"Whon I loft Now York everything In the
financial world looked encouraging , The
Union Pacific Railroad company no dcd rome

was furnished by Mr. Ames , myself and onn
or two olhors of Iho directors. It was with
001110 surprise , therefore , that when 1 was In

nnd I received praising calls to rome homo.
I finally telegraphed a suggestion to maku n

available securities of thn company , which
amounted to moro than double the amount
of the proposedurodIt. Such note * I thought
tbe company could afford to offer its cred

only to this fact , but to iho corinlnty of a

ibo Uauo of such notes , This , too , would
brtdgo ever tlio orjsls until the condition of
the Dond market would pormlt , within the

that owing to Increasing competition from

Ono of the principal reasons for such poor

great hatred of the red man for walking ,

Already the recruits have been making
friends with the whlto men and are fre
quently scon sipping a glass of beer , for
which some whlto soldier has paid. Some of
thn veterans of the Second don't take kindly
to the tort's now acquisition. They don'l

that Dr. Sage's Catarrh Rem
edy cures the worst cases of
chronic catarrh in the head ,
catarrhal headache , and " cold
in the head. "
In perfect faith , its makers ,
the World's Dispensary Med
ical Association of Buffalo ,
N. Y. , offers to pay $500 to
any one suffering from chronic
catarrh in thp head whom
they cannot cure.
Now if the conditions were
reversed if they asked you to
pay $500 for a positive , cure
you might hesitate. Merc are
reputable men , with years of
honorable dealing ; thousands
of dollars and a great name
back of them ancl they say
" We can cure you because
we've cured thousands like
you if we can't we'll pay
you $500 for the knowledge
that there's ' one whom we
' "
can't cure.
They believe in themselves ,
Isn't it worth a trial ? Isn't
any trial preferable to catarrh ?
