The trade , it Is now learned , never pro
gressed any further than the making ol the
contract , which was to take effect .September
1 , one of the conditions made by D.infortU
buiriK that the title to the property should
bo free from a'l ' clouds. When Danforth ex
amined the abstract inoro carefully iccently
ho found that the tltlo was Imperfect

upon it being a judgment for
17,000 , and It was evident that It
might bo several years before the title could
bo perfected. Yesterday ho accordingly
withdrew from the contract and the property
la still In the hands of Pimnelo & Morse.
Kvor since \Vhltnoy , the ox-manager , dis
appeared the hotel has been run moiely as a
lodging house. NVIntnoy's contract has now
expired and it remains to be seen what
will bo done with It. Parmelo &
Morse are both out of the city ,
one in New York and the other In 'Icxas , so
that an Interview can not bo had with either
one. The hotel is under the supervision of
John Cirant , u young man who bus been con
nected with it for auveriu years. He slates
that ho received u letter from one of the
proprietors which stated that neither of them
claimed the hotel but It was In the hands et
Danforth , who they bald had bought It.
They claimed that the contract be-
twt > on them und Dan forth was
binding , and they would have no tiouble
in holding him to it. LKinforth is
just us suto on hts part that the contract is
not binding , and the consequence is Uioro
scorns to bo a blooming prospect that the dis
pute will load to u protracted lawsuit , per
haps the longest and bitterest of all the long
ana bitter ones that have DOOM fought over

fort is being made to interest local cap-

arrangements may be made in the course of a
few days , In case it is successful , the com
pany will try to secure the hotel , which will
accommodate a largo number of patients , und
is well adapted for an establishment of the
kind. The uncertainty of ownership of the
building , it is feared , will render negotiations
diftlcult , and the plan m.iy fall through from

of ruins. Hud the high wind continued ,
which prevailed during the early stage of
the conflagration , the entire city would have
been destroyed. Every building between the
railroad track on the North lilniT , on South
Madison street , on Kast and Laiighlin
streets , on the west , have two lesidoncns and
the depot building , is but a heap of ashes.
The region bounded by Third , Washington ,
Bluff nnd Union streets , with the exception
of n biick setiool house und the residence of
George Hcich , is a blackened waste. Not
much less than $1,000,000 worth of propertv

found lodging in tlio houses of other moro

night on the beach keeping watch over what
little had been resound" from the lla-nos. It

surance covering the destroyed property.
Many of the losers are badly crippled while
others tire ruined financially. So far as
learned , only one serious accident occurred.
It was the severe burning about tbo arms ,
Early yesterday evening the mayor of the
city placed the city under niurtiul law ,
which prevailed during the entire night. A
number of suspicious characters wore
caught lurking around nnd were jailed until
