STOCKS ltO.Vl > S.
NEW i'oitic , Aug. 27. The stock market was
not so active today , especially In the after
noon , and displayed In the main a reaction
ary temper under heavy realizations and
prices ruled throughout the day at a slightly
lower level than those of last evening. The
efforts for a reaction were made with moro
confidence this morning , as London was again
a seller of stocks , everything except Union
Pacific , among tbo favorites of that center
being among the stocks disposed of , and rc-
jorts of frost In the far northwest came In to
iclp the beir : sentiment among the traders.
I'rlces were higher at the opening , but thu
irossuro brought to boar was at last success
ful In forcing prices below the opening.
The bullish sentiment In tno street , however -
over , remains unimpaired , and the extremely
stubborn resistance shown by prices to react ,
oven under the most discouraging circn in
stances , shows that the present movement Is
jascd on a ( Inner foundation than any up
ward movement within the last two years.
Commission puoplo report ustoncilly growing
Interest In the market and the Increased In-
liilry Is still In the widening of the market
ind the extension of transactions to a largo
mm tier ot blocks which have laid dormant

The business of today and yesterday was
moro wldly distributed than any two days for
the lust year , the number of stocks dealt In
reaching about 125. Another encouraging
sign for the market Is the comparatively In-
slgnlflcunco of the dealings In the unlisted de
partment , the Incubus of the manipulation of
.lioso properties being removed from thu mar
ket gives legitimate securities a chance to
roach their proper level. The effects of the
'rc)3t In the west were of not material consequence
quence nnd the declines In prices went further
than fractions , although a few stocks hero
ind there yielded because of special pressure
of other circumstances.
The Industrials were moro active and all
wore helped by special Influences. Sugar
being strong on the reported deal with oupo-
sltlon with rellncrs , led boiuuso of the luck
of opposition to the reorganizing scheme at
the meeting and Cordage continue J Us reac
tion from Its Into depression. There were fre-
inoiit eh.mgcs of temper during the day. Thu
market finally closed only fairly active and
loavy to weak. The trudlii. , ' reached 240b5J

Railroad bonds were not so active nnd were
rather Inclined to follow the sliuro list down

Government bonds have been dull and
