NEW VOIIK , Aug. 21. The.stock market today
was hampered at the opening by a partial In
terruption of communication by telegraph
and theio was comparative ! ) few orders
either to buy or sell for outside parties at the
early trading , but It soon developed a decid
edly strong tone , whllo an active swell dis
tributed busliios-i , and material advances wore
scored In nil the leading active .stocks as well
as a few other specialties. TDu bears and trad
ers still claim that pr'ccs will go up upon
manipulation and oil' upon long selling , I ut
whllo there m undoubtedly much skillful
manipulation on the bull side , the market has
the support of a more liberal outside client
age than for some time and whllo the reac
tion Is felt. They h.ivo now been trying
for nearly two weeks lo bring about a mate
rial set bacl < In tlio markets. Their efforts
have resulted In only a partial reaction and
the checking for a tln.u of the new buying
which R'-Mlu seems to bu gathering conUilcnce.
Today the few stocks which have of late
iitonoi > oli70l so hir.o a s.hare of the attention
were < iulet , orders bolng well distributed.
Among the leadlnz stocks K very uniform ,
but at the sumo tlmo substantial , upward
movement was effected. . The loss of the bank
reserve and the utrurts of the reaction seems
to direct attention to the money tltiiatlon
with a view to creating alarm. This was seen
In the opening , which was iiulut and rather
heavy at small fractional declines from
Saturday's final ( Icures. The buying was ,
however , evidently batter than the selling and
tlio demand for stocks In all portions of
the list grew so rapidly that almost Immedi
ately tliu market developed a strong upward
tendency , which later spread to even special
stocks which have lain practically dormant
for some tlmo and In some of these material
advances were scored , the market galnlnc
both strength and activity as prices rjso In
the face of the efforts put forth to Ueeu them
down. The news of the day was still of the
most reassuring chiiraelor and buying orders
became more numerous as the day wore along ,
and not until well lu the afternoon did the
anlmat'on ' die away or prices give signs of
having icachcd the top 11 tires. The best
prices , however , were well maintained until
tliu last hour , when the usual realizations
caused a droplng tendency , though hero and
there material chamics were made.
Advices that the reported frosts after all
had done no damage to corn or late wheat
gave .ho impulse which brought lu the orders
to buy and the advices from the other side of
the water foreshadowed the return of a portion
tion of the gold lately sent there. The market
was unusually free from features , the rise
being well sustained , the close Lolhg llrm and

NKW YOIIK , Aug. . Henry tXewa , the
banker , says ! The spirit of Improvement In
the stock market that set In about two weeks
ago Is still maintained , though at the moment
there are > omo symptoms of abatement. A
variety of circumstances have contributed to
thU change of tone. To begin with , tlio un
favorable aspects Of the situation had been
considerably exasperated In the estimate of

held In abeyance or th jr lulttionce exhausted

influences. At this juncture came the Intelli
gence of even a larger crop of wheat than the
previous large estimates had Indicated , and
the prospects of the corn crop alco have ex
hibited u steady Improvement. The Iron trade
has Hhowcd a marked recovery , the combined
June and July product having equalled the
extraordinary IIcures of lust year , while the
stocks on hand have bccu reduced ; which Is u
favorable Indication of recovery In our Indus
tries ut largo. The boom In wheat and rye
consequent upon the Kiisslun ukase prohibit
ing the export of the latter grain , while In-
forently favorable to the railroads , has
awakened the long dormant spirit of specula
tion In the grain trade , the contuulon of which
has already spread to the Stock Kxehango.
The tendency of Information from Great Urit
tain and the continent lies been to dlspol the
Illusions about the supposed desperate condi
tion of transatlantic finances. At London
lucre Is adlstlnut Improvement of feeling ;
und although business Is quiet , conservative
und unremuiierutlvii throughout Kngland.yet
a more hopeful feeling begins to prevail theio.
Even a ray of hope begins to dawn upon Ar

\ > UCK , snuwii u uui'iuiu rucuTury , rnero can
bo no doubt that the favorab.u opinions and
assurances recently formally expressed by the
governor of the llank of r'ugland to which al
lusion was made In my advices of lust week
have also been a very Important contribution
towards the recovery of tone ; for It Is natur
ally reasoned that. If tlio bank looks on the
future with the comparative conlldenco e\-
Piosaed by Mr. i.lddcrdale. iliero can
bo iii , reason why that Institution should
use Its power. to prevent any
return of gold to this country
that the natural course of the grain trade
may call for ; which Is the point on which Now
York especially needs assurance. The late
ness of the autumnal on flow of money from
this center to the west has also had an assur
ing direct , the more so us It puts back that
movement so much nearer to the time when
we may expect a compensation for the drain
In Imports of specie. A week ago , wo had u
surplus reserve of $17,6(50,000 ( , whllo at the same
tlmoot } Ji'0 there was a deficiency of JKiS.OOJ
and In IbsO a surplus of only * : iii-OJO : ; which
would seem to suggest that our current busi
ness with the Interior Is bolng conducted so as
to avoid any undue commitments with that
section. The effect ot this easier condition Is
apparent In the Increase of money olFered on
time loans for periods within six months. Cut
ting together these several factors It cannot
bo denied that they amount to a substantial
Improvement iu the situation ; and coming , as.
thev have , In u largo measure unexpectedly.
It la not surprising thut they have changed
the temper of the market and stimulated
speculation , oven to the extent of bringing
out : iu outside demand both spec ilatlvo anil
for Investment , lint , on the other side. It
should not bo Ignored that undoubtedly the
occasion ha3 been seized by parties long and
heavily loaded with uusulahlo stock ? for fos
tering speculation and creating an opportu
nity to unload , Prudent operator * will not
overlook the fact that there Is a very Import
ant element of weakness In Iho mnrket In tliu
form of the socurlt es of badly Hiiuncod corpor
ations and of railroads which have become
ombar.issod through eagerness to cover terri
tory which for years to come cannot yield a
paying return upon the construction outiay.s.
This Is pro-einlnently the case In the south
and In the fur west anil southwest ; and the
ease of those properties Is made worsa
by the Increasing hostility of the
granger and alliance factions to the
railroad Interest , This element is calculated
to have an Important Inlluenco on the Wali
street situation. At llrst the holders ot such
securities , union ; ; whom are men of largo re
sources , will usu all tholr Inlliiencu to stimu
late the market ; but at the sumo time they
will be sellers of their specialties until their
Individual Interest lias been sullicleiitly
served , when that Important set of Mipuorters
will disappear from the arena , and I shall bo
surprised If the lo s of that element does not
prove u severe Hhuck to the market. For this
and other reasons. I utu persuaded that It
would bo unwise to assume that the present
