CIIICAOO , Aug. 10. The bulls took charge of
the whont market today and kept the boars
dancing most of thu time. Thu. news around
the opening was bullish. The government re
port wis Interpreted ns rnthcr bearish , but
the European situation Is looked upon ns so de
cidedly bullish as to more than counteract
the conditions. Liverpool was strong nnd ! >
penny higher ; cables from I'urls Indicated a
strong market , the weather was wet and the
dispatches seemingly ronllrmed the reports of
damngo from blight In the northwest , e.uued
by the late hot weather.
Now York opened higher nnd there wore
heavy buying orders from there and St.
Louis. Logan. S. V. White. Hownriz-Ihipcu
and many of the smaller commission houses
had i'cnunms buying orders at top figures
ttnd as the offerings wore limited prices were
khnrply advanced. After the Hurry caused
by the execution of the-iu orders was over aim
the market Oegan to manifest a tendency to
lag , It was glvun a new and strong Impetus
upward by a series of cablegrams to some of
the larger houses saying at llr.st that the
liussliins had prohibited the exportation from
that country of rye after September 1 nnd
continue for the year.
When this IIUWH was announced it rnot with
little credence , but us the IIOUMJ which first
received It bought heavily on the strength of
It , and ns other houses that received the samu
( idvlce ranged themselves on the buying side ,
the shorts weiu pnnlc-slrlcken , and values
advanced rapidly amid considerable excite
ment. Duecnilicr opened at WAO against ! ll'4e
at the elo o yesterday , and sold up quickly to
K'.c ; sauced buck to irjiTll."ie. ( and then on
Uio report of the Russian rye export news
lumped toU.fi. ' . At this point the late oables
announced hotter weather on the continent
nnd sninudecllne In Paris , unil the shorts hav
ing pretty well coveied , there wns a drop to
WUc. Then corn began to show .ncrea d ex
citement , nnd the estimated receipts for to
morrow being light there wiis another rush
lo buy when December reached ( P.I'/jO. ' It too *
another ( hop to Die , then boomed upward
touching OP ; amid much excitement , wavered
a little receding toKt'jc and then in the last
llftuen minutes under covering by the big
Ihorts who had been holding out , went to 05c
and ch'sed Him at tU'aC.
1'ardrldge , the big bear , was forced In at the
last , cover.ng . a heavy line of shoits through
his hiokcrs. lluam. however , continued to
put out good lines on every bulge. Cables
wore all higher , llerl n showing thu most ad
vance. The weather In Kngland was wet.
1'orelgners were nald to bu buying In Nuw
York with elghty-olght boat loads taken
there and at other seaboard points. I'onnsol-
innn was reported to bo a big buyer
of both cash and futures. The fact that thu
amount of wheat on ocean passage increased
IHOO.OCU during the week had no apparent ef
fect on prices. Four ears of new wheat , spring ,
wns received today.
Corn started In rather weak , September
being previously quoted utfiH'uig.ViUa against
KUc lit tliu close yuMurdny ; but thu strength In
wheat , the light oll'erlngx of corn am ! the
fears of the shorts who suspected manlpula-
tlon by a bull move , generally ; accredited to
New York speculators , soon caiibcd a sharp
ndvancu to UO'se.
Tliu market then eased off Homo ; but during
thu last hour started up again , selling to
ttl' e ; It then broke to .VJ'iC at which price It
closed. The feeling was very nervous and
prices went up and down spasmodically , but
the undercurrent was very light. Thegov-
crnmcnlerop report was not as favorable us
the trade gunorally had expected , as It snowed
a decllno of two points In .Inly.
Uats were quiet but strong In sympathy
With corn. Provisions did not sympathize , to
nnyoMont with the excitement In grains ;
fluctuations were conllned to a narrow range
and the eloso was at about outside figures and
nt. t-mall advances over yesturday's figures.
Vmicr the stimulus of thu liusslan news rye
took on the appearance of aspeuulatlvo grain.
Today the cash aitlelo advanced 4o and
futures 4's(2.rlii' ' ( .

NB\V YOIIK , Aug. 11. Dullness was again the
most prominent charactorlstlc of the stook
innrkot today , hut thuro was a sharp rally In
the foionoon which was not maintained lator.
nnd the llnal changes for the day nro In almost -
most nil eases Insignificant. The traders are
again In rather a bullish frame of mind , hut
do not work on the other tide of the
market as frequently ns the bull sldo , but
shorts me covered quickly on Indication of
nr.y now buying or rumor which points to any
largo Interest , protecting Its .stocks.
The sharp rally tuts morning In the face of
moderate selling by London was entirely duo
to the coveting of shorts while the offerings
of slocks from domestic sources were unusu
ally small. Union I'aclllc today was rather
leas prominent In the dealings , and while It
topehed : i55i percent In the , early trading It
rallied with the other active stocks , and Indi
cations point to the fact that the largo oarn-
Ingo reported by the Atohlson and the reas
suring nature ot thu government crop report
hiivo made the sellers of Union Paelllc a little
more cautious In tholr operations. The move
ments of hnuortance In the list were very few
In number and the general list was as
dull and featureless us usual , though the
sensation of the day was the dro | >
In Klchmond & West 1'olnt preferred to 4US4
per cent/ against .VI pur cent as the lust sale
of the week. Special weakness was scon In
Tennessee ouil : also , but thu general tendency
among railroad stocks where any lluetnutlon
was apparent whatever was uoward. but the
trading in the general list was so dull that no
feature could no scon other than those men
tioned. The apparent solllni : by London
nmde Louisville rather wuaiiur than the other
loading stocks , while Koek Island was the
strongest on thu list ; and while the early rlt-o
was material , the greater portion of the Im
provement was lost before noon , nnd
into In the day the selling of Union
I'aclllo and Lonlsvlllo & Nashville was
resumed on n larger scale , the former
especially weakening under the pressure. Its
bostllguroof the forenoon was IUi ! percent
but It touched U24 ! per cent before the oloso
and ended at the lowest price.
Tim late dealings developed some support
In a few stocks but thu entire list felt the of-
foot of the extreme weakness ot Union I'acllle
and everything yielded In sympathy , many
stocks roaelilnc tholr lowest for the day at
the time. The corn roads niadoa specially
stubborn res stance to the downward ten
dency but the market closed quiet and heavy
to weak at or near the lowest prices of the
Tile dealings In rallro.ui bonds were not so
widely distributed today , and whllo the mar
ket as n whole dlslayed a fairly steady tone ,
thu trading reached only 437.UOJ with no other
feature In thu market.
tiovernment bonds were dull and easier ,
State bonds wore entirely neglected.

to y. A. McWhorter : It frocUt'iitly | happens
that n government report starts nn uiiheaval
In the market. Possibly that was the rasu
today , but why It should Is n mystery. Thu
ndvancu having tot under good hoadwny cir
cumstances trilling In themselves accelerated
the pace. Perhaps the most Influential Item
of news was thu luportod prohibition bv the
the Kuxslali government of the export itlon of
ryu. This had lieeu announced on sovural
pruvlous occasions and was supposed to be
.something of a chestnut , but It Is a
curious feature of speculation that
what falls lifeless on thu market
today maj' sot It on Ilio tomorrow. There hud
been considerable tension In rye for somu
time , the prleo having advanced 2ic In a few
weeks. The nous from Kuss n was more than
.shorts could stand ami covering ny this lutur-
I'.st caused a rnlly In rye. This alarmed
wheat shorts ami there beeiune quite un unan
imous opinion that It wns time to close up
their contracts. The liquidation by this In
terest has been very great and thoru must

up at thu close. Thu sharp advance
Is expected to chock the export
demand , but a largo business bus been douu
bv oxportiT.s today. The sharp demand for
wheat and ryu has resulted Inconsiderably
enlarging the amount on ocean passage.
India shipments last week were about 40 nor
cent greater than the preceding week. The
now spring whont will short y begin to move ,
andarlsoln prices will pronably stimulate
deliveries of winter wheat. On the whole vro
can sou little to uncour.igu buying or holding
of wheat on this bulge , and wo bolluvu prices
will bu materially lower wthln a tow
diiys unless sumo new factor on
the tin 1 sldu comes Into view.

readily take their offerings. They appeared
to bo soiling all the market would tnko
without showing weakness. The government
report was moro favorable than expected nnd
the weather since the report was made up has
been the bust of thu season for this grain.
This and thu expectations of a squeeze In Sop-
temtoi ought to bring out the old corn pretty
freely the latter part of this week. Oats have
been llrm without much animation. Provis
ions dull and featureless but not particularly
weak. They seem moro likely to rally some
what than to brenk lower.
