"I want protection from do o d d nig-
i , Jodgo. My God , doy got nwful excited
last night. "
The speaker wns "Kov. Dr. " Sherwood , the
colored journeyman soul savor , and vvhllo ho
tvas as sensational nnd dramatic 01 ever , in
this Instance ho wns not compelled to draw
on his Imagination , for the facts furnished
ample material.
Ho appeared in court yesterday morning
to answer to the charge preferred against
him of maltreating nnd abusing the lit
tle colored boys under his charge , and his
demand for protection was occasioned by n
demonstration tlmt wns made by a number
of the colored residents of thn city. Tno
lory published In yesterday's ' BKK
called tholr attention to tno ciiso.
nna nftor n brief invontigntion they visited
the Walker residence in a body nnd made nn
nngry demand for the nlleged preacher. It
was not deemed advisable for him to put In
an appearance , nnd his friends did tholr best
to qulut tbo excited crowd. They fully in
tended to take him out and handle him
roughly , hut sober counsel prevailed und thu
crowd dispersed.
The "Kov. Dr. " wus very much unnerved
bv the demonstration , nnd ho Invoked tlio
aid of thn court to protect him from personal
violence. The Judge told him thut ho had no
nuch power , nnd advised the evangelist to
oeic nrotectlon nt the bands of the chief of
police If ho felt ufruiu , but Sherwood uld not
mnko any demand on thu chief for a uni
formed body guard.
Mrs. oherwood wns in court with her hus
band , nnd when the hearing of the case was
postponed until li :3U : o'clock Monday after
noon , she collected the boy.snround her und
started for her boarding place , while Sher
wood disappeared in nn opposite direction.
An nttompt to talk with the boys alone was
not successful , ns the woman kept n very
close eye on them.
At the boarding plac < ' at 1211 Davenport
etroot , however , the boys were found , as
well as nn opportunity to tnlk with them ,
although cither hborxvood or his wife found
it convenient to drop around every few mln-
Utos nnd see that none of the llttlo flock were
missing. The little fellows were very reti
cent , nnd it wns evident thut their treat
ment wus not n pleasant subject for
either discussion or contemplation. None of
this , however , wns apparent when they were
asked nbout the cities they had visited or
nny other subject except the ono that re
called so much that wn. unpleasant nnd pnin-
fuL When a baud book wus picked up and
ono ot the boys wns nsued about tbo
music , the others gathered around
and nil animatedly entered into the
conversation , but the rniuutu that an at
tempt was made to switch off into the rolu
tlon between Sherwood nnd the boys It wns
BI if the claims had suddenly opened und n
chilling rnin hud descended. Silence fell
upon the group , und they sneaked awny as
it thn very mention of Sherwood's nnmo in
connection with their treatment , presaged the
appearance of the dreaded rawhldo.
The members of the baud aroGeorgo Green
of Jacksonville , Fin. , baritone , who has been
\rlth the band a year ; Willlutn Jones of Llttlo
"
Rocic , tuba , who"1ms been with the band six
months ; George F. Thompson of Tallahassee ,
nn. , B Hat cornet , with the band sixteen
months ; Sam DoLnnoy of Fcrnandtno , Fla. ,
E Hut cornet , with the bund n year ;
Sam Johnson of Memphis , first alto ,
eovun months with the baud ; Juliui Frazlor
of Augusta , Gu. , bass drum , six months with
the company ; Lorrano Mitchell , Now Or
leans , snare drum , eight months with the
band , and Fanms Davis of Atcblson , slide
trombone , four months with the band.
Tbo boys are as bright ns a dollar and as
full of life us a dog Is of fleas , nnd there Is
upon the surface no reason for the sllonco
and depression ttiat envelopes them when
certain matters are touched upon.
They have learned their lesson well and
they tell with a monotonous out suspicious
amonoss of language of the whippings that
they receive "whon they need it. " It was
impossible to got each of the boys out by
himself , although this was accomplished in
two Instances. They seem to bo suspicious
of each ether nnd afraid to talk of tbo matter
in tbo presence of another.
On one point there is nn apparent unanim
ity of sentiment , nnd tlmt is thnt Sherwood
Is impartial in his use of the rawhide , and
lashes them all freely from tbo B Hut corwit-
'w 1st to the bass drummer. Ono of the boys
now boars two great , livid murks across bis
Toco , which look 11 KO the mark of a branding
Iron. They wore caused by tno rawhide only
n fovv days ago.
The boys state that thov are whipped only
"whon they need it , " but it is apparent that
they Imvo been taught they need whipping
lor things not ordinarily supposed to demand
ouch correction. In each ot hoi's presence
they stated that they came in as soon ns it
* " got hot , but ono of the bovs , when alone , told
of a froe-for-all whipping which was Inflicted
on ovary ono of the eight the
other day , oocnuso they wont In too soon ,
and this statement wus afterward corrobor
ated by another. In stereotyped sentences
they said that they dl.l not have to work
hard , yet when the reporter suguested that
they ough.t to ho practicing , ono weary player
remarked that ho "wus tired of practicing ,
as ho had boon at It nil day long day uftor
dov. "
Sherwood states tlmt the boys nro nil or-
pBans nnd tbo boys themselves make the
sumo statement , but when closely questioned
it was found that ono has both parents living
and nt least ono other hus n mother.
Sherwood discourses cl'.bly of how much
he is doing for the boy and of tbo sacrifice
ho is making to take them along.
lie cheerfully imported the information
that ho was worth Ri.VWO , ana hud nn income
of > ,000 n year , yet ho Insisted tlmt the band
was barely paying tholr own expenses. Ho
claimed that they were raising money to
build an educational institution at I'cnsa-
colu , Fin , , but wns sururi.singly
abort of knowledro ns to the
plans or size of the building.
llo merely know tlmt seven acres of ground
had been purchased Just outsulo of I'onsacoln
and work on ono wing of the building begun ,
but tie could not toll in what state the work
now Is. Ho said ho rulsed 1,000 last year ,
but for some reason he has tufncd ever no
money for tbo past eight months.
The money turned In lint year was col
lected bv him ns ngunt of the church nnd not
ralsea by the baud. Whenever hu Holds a
mooting he takes the entire collection , which
is devoted to his expenses , yet ho admitted
thnt this wns the third city where ho find to
pay board since ho has been out. Ho gener
ally goes to the parsonage and the boys nro
quartered upon members of the congrega
tion ,
The "Kov. Dr. " wus uskcd where ho ob
tained his title , and confessed that ho was
not educated , and his degree was conferred
by the "albumen" ( presumably alumni ) so
ciety of the Divinity high school of Wash
ington , N , O. Shurwooo said thnt the so
ciety was autorUctl to confer the degrees of
II. 1) . , D. D. and D. C. L. on people
whether they were entitled to them or not.
Ho Intimated that ho know his buslnos , and
thut the title of "doctor" wus of use to him.
Ho said that the boys handled the money ,
nnd spent what they choose , but this was
very lamely corroborated by the ooys thtun-
BOlvcs. Ho claimed that every boy collected
money on the .street , but they Insisted thut it
was taken possession of by the lender.
Thu Afro-Ainorlnm league is taking n deep
Interest in the case nnd anxiously awaiting
developments. If It Is found advisable to
take the boys invay from Sherwood , thu
lauguo will do all In Its power to provide for
them.
In referring to Mrs. Wnlker , Sherwood re-
jiohtedly called her u llur , notwithstanding
the'fact that her truthfulness and voracity
nro vouched for by Kov. William A. Moore ,
her pastor , and several of the loading mem
bers of the African Methodist Epis
copal church. Without any author

During nil of those long years the IJarbor

This kept out competing linns , us the board

Last spring Chairman Hlrkhnuser of tno

took place .somoveelis agO , und .since tlmt

und specillcatlons had been carefully corroc-
